SCREENING: BREAKING SOCIAL Breaking Social&nbsp;(released in 2023) is a documentary by award-winning Fredrik Gertten. It explores global patterns of kleptocracy and extractivism, weaving threads between global uprisings, shared anger and courageous action. It’s about daring to speak up and listen to frontline voices already fighting against global patterns of injustice and corruption. Fredrik Gertten&nbsp;is an award-winning Swedish director. He’s famous for local stories with a global impact, with films like PUSH (2019), JOZI GOLD (2019), Bikes vs Cars (2015), Big Boys Gone Bananas!* (2011) and Bananas!* (2009). He’s also the founder of the production company WG Film – one of Sweden’s most prominent documentary production companies. Here he combines filmmaking with a role as creative producer. Marty Lehman: Watercolor Impressions 2008 – 2024

Marty Lehman returns to the Nordic Hall! Former architect, and Scandinavian Charitable Society board member, Marty Lehman, paints buildings, cityscapes, landscape and “all things Swedish.” Marty graduated from Cornell University’s College of Architecture in 1960, and had a professional career in architecture for nearly 50 years, working in Stockholm, Sweden, Boston ,Cambridge and for 22 years as one of DIGITAL’s corporate architects. Marty&nbsp;“re-discovered” the joy of watercolor painting. This show represents work done in the past 16 years, featuring his favorite themes… buildings, cityscapes, landscapes, and all things Swedish. What’s a cookbook club? It’s the idea is that — like a traditional book club — every month you get together as a group. If you love to cook or bake, (especially Scandi recipes) and love sharing food with friends this is the perfect place for you! Screening: Family Time (2023)

Presented as the Library’s November film choice:&nbsp;Family Time (2023) Family Time&nbsp;(Finnish:&nbsp;Mummola) is a 2023 comedy – drama film written and directed by Tia Kouvo in her feature directorial debut. The film follows an annual family Christmas get-together that sees the usual tensions rise. It’s based on Kouvo’s s 2018 short of the same name. The film had its world premiere in the Encounters section of the&nbsp;73rd Berlin International Film Festival&nbsp;on 20 February 2023. It was chosen as the&nbsp;Finnish entry&nbsp;for&nbsp;Best International Feature Film at the&nbsp;97th Academy Awards. Lecture: Burning Down the Longhouse with Dr. William Short

A typical weapon in the arsenal of Vikings was fire, and Vikings were said to destroy everything with fire and sword (að setja allt í bál og brand), a phrase still current in modern Icelandic. On November 16, 2024, Dr. William R. Short of Hurstwic will return to SCC&amp;L to discuss the commonly used Viking-age battle tactic of attacking a man in his house by setting fire to the house. Hurstwic has just completed a major research project using experimental archaeology at the Viking house at Eiríksstaðir in Iceland. We built seven house structures, instrumented them with scientific apparatus, and then burned them down. Join us for this fascinating discussion that will talk about the tactic and why Viking warriors thought it to be a humane way to conduct battle, and about the results of our research on the tactic. Danish Trombonist Lecture and Performance

Join Kevin A. Virgilio for an interesting lecture about Danish trombonists and a performance. Danish composers contributed meaningful repertoire for solo trombone in the early 20th century. Their music has become a lasting part of the catalog, and, over a century later, it continues to grace trombone recital programs the world over. This presentation is a three-pronged examination into the factors that led Danish composers to begin writing for trombones as a solo instrument, and how it was later performed by the international trombone community as established works: The lecture discusses the rise of trombones in the European renaissance and their eventual assimilation into Danish culture, the stylistic qualities of two pieces written for solo trombone and the musical elements they share with other pivotal works from within the Danish community, and some non-musical factors that helped propagate these trombone solos. Virgilio Hailed by the New York Music Daily as a “carefree” and “soulful” player, Kevin A. Virgilio is a Boston-based trombonist and educator whose performances run the gamut of contemporary and classical styles. An active freelance musician, Dr. Virgilio recently appeared with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the New York Festival Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, and the Westchester Oratorio Society. Dr. Virgilio appears regularly in local musical theater productions, including West-Side Story, In the Heights, A Christmas Carol, An American in Paris, Disney’s Frozen, and the Music Man. He is currently on faculty at Groton Hill Music Center, Needham Music in Needham, Massachusetts, and Brookline Public Schools, and has held faculty positions at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Luzerne Music Center in Lake Luzerne, New York, and with the Handel and Haydn Society.

St. Lucia Concert

Come celebrate light at the darkest time of year! Northbound presents a program of Nordic winter songs in 5 part harmony and a traditional Lucia procession. Northbound is group of five singers from the Boston area with Scandinavian roots. Their music and performances are defined by a love of Nordic vocal music, long time friendship, humor and many years of performing traditional and contemporary vocal music together. For this special Lucia performance they are joined by their children in a candle lit Swedish Lucia procession. Sankta Lucia celebrations are an important part of the Scandinavian Christmas season, which traditionally begins on St. Lucia Day on December 13 and ends on January 13. Lucia processions announce the beginning of the Christmas season, with Lucia appearing in a white gown and red sash, with a crown of lit candles in her hair. Traditionally the eldest daughter, dressed as Lucia, would carry a tray of buns and coffee to her parents in the early morning in their home. These days, many towns elect a girl to play Lucia for public processions accompanied by attendants of boys and girls who sing songs of the season, performing in churches, community centers, retirement homes, and even shopping malls. The festival of Sankta Lucia or Saint Lucy in Scandinavia is most simply understood as a celebration of light and hope in a time of darkness. Celebrated close to the winter solstice, much of Scandinavia has just a few hours of daylight at this time. The customs surrounding Sankta Lucia Day are a combination of old pagan customs and Christian beliefs. Saint Lucia was a Sicilian martyr of the Catholic Church, whose story came to Sweden with Christianity. Foraging is a huge part of Nordic cooking. From Noma making it chic in Copenhagen to Sweden’s ancient custom referred to as “Allemansrätten”, allowing you to roam in any wood, meadow or field to forage for wild food. Want to lean what it’s all about? Join local foraging expert Diana Burnell for a relaxing walk in the woods! You will learn how to identify mushrooms and other delicious local wild edibles. This class is perfect for the forager/mushroom enthusiast, outdoor enthusiast, foodie or vegetarian. We will review how to properly identify mushrooms and wild edibles, discuss sustainable harvesting and local laws and collect specimens to study. Learn 5-10 edible mushroom species that are available now, as well as a variety of non-edible/poisonous fungi and perhaps even take some home with you to enjoy! As a child, she would spend hours in her back woods, playing ‘Transcendentalists’ with her sister and mother (she was always Henry David Thoreau). In 2014, she started Edible Excursions Wild Foods, selling her foraged goods to restaurants from New Hampshire to New York. Longing to share her passion with the masses, Diana launched Edible Excursions Foraging in 2019 and currently offers private classes, guided group walks, home/land owner surveys, wild picnics and lectures around New England.

Join Alyssa in the Nordic Hall as she performs traditional and modern Scandinavian music on her beautiful handmade nyckelharpa made in Sweden, which is Sweden’s national instrument. This beautiful and haunting music will have your toes tapping and heart singing! Saturday, Oct. 19th 2024 | 1pm | $20; $10 for SCC members | <a href="about:blank" target="_blank">tickets</a> ABOUT Alyssa:&nbsp;<a href="https://alyssafiddle.com/" target="_blank">Alyssa Rodriguez</a>&nbsp;is one of the few and finest players of the nyckelharpa, Sweden’s national “keyed fiddle” instrument, in New York. In 2021, she was awarded a prestigious Fulbright grant to study in Helsinki, Finland. During her 2021-2022 grant year, she studied nyckelharpa at The Sibelius Academy where she researched Nordic folk music and folk music improvisation. Alyssa has studied with several riksspellmän (master Swedish folk musicians) and studied in Sweden at the all nyckelharpa summer festival at Ekebyholm Castle founded by Eric Sahlström. She has headlined festivals at the American Swedish Institute and at the Jamestown Scandinavian Festival, and given lecture recitals at St. Olaf College and University of Madison, Wisconsin. Her music has been featured on WXXI and WRUR in Rochester, New York, KXCI-FM in Arizona, and she has appeared in Nordstjernan magazine and Nyckelharpan in Sweden.
