Premiere of Sci-Fi Transmedia Opera "White Raven, Black Dove", Sep 26-28

Celebrated for creating diverse, timely and relevant opera, White Snake Projects (WSP) returns to Boston’s Strand Theatre, September 26-28, 2025, for the world premiere of White Raven, Black Dove, in a season dedicated to addressing the climate crisis through art. Composed by Jacinth Greywoode and Andrew Lynch, and written by librettist Cerise Lim Jacob, White Raven, Blake Dove is an original work of science fiction fantasy exploring two issues consuming America today – race and climate change. An early adopter of innovative technology, WSP continues to lead the vanguard in shaping new operas with tech advancements. This groundbreaking production comprises a live performance by some of today’s leading opera singers, an orchestra with electronics and chorus, augmented by computer generated imagery and animation created in  the video game platform, Unreal Engine.

Frederick Douglass Opera Gets New England Premiere in Boston, June 20

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), in partnership with “one of the nation’s most intriguing opera companies (The New York Times),” Odyssey Opera, presents the New England premiere of Frederick Douglass at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. This opera, composed in three acts by prominent 20th-century Black composer Ulysses Kay, features a libretto by Donald Dorr and centers on a fictionalized account of the final year of the renowned Black abolitionist and statesman. Conducted by Gil Rose, this concert version showcases the full BMOP orchestra along with several of today’s leading vocalists, including bassist Kenneth Kellogg (Detroit Opera, Seattle Opera) in the lead role of Douglass.

Third Annual "Let's Celebrate" Holiday Opera Series

Hailed for creating diverse, timely and relevant opera, activist opera company White Snake Projects (WSP) hosts the third installment of Let’s Celebrate!, an annual holiday tradition presenting brand-new operas that celebrate the diversity of the Boston area and the myriad holidays celebrated here. Mirroring the city’s demographics, Let’s Celebrate! serves up a collection of three 20-minute operas telling stories about holidays and families from various cultures around the world. With post-show panel discussions about intersectionality during the holiday season, this year’s concert embraces the traditions of Mexico’s Black Christ at Chalma, Uzbekistan’s Navruz, a national holiday celebrating the new year and new life, and Spain’s La Tomatina, a tomato throwing festival.

Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the nation’s most intriguing opera companies,” Odyssey Opera, in partnership with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), presents a rare Boston showing of the Gershwin brothers’ two political musicals at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. With scores by George Gershwin, libretti by Ira Gershwin, and books by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, the stories of Of Thee I Sing (1931) and Let ‘Em Eat Cake (1933) are both centered on American politics: the former being a politically correct Pulitzer Prize-winning musical; the latter, a politically incorrect flop. Reimagined as a live concert experience, conductor Gil Rose leads a formidable ensemble of established singers including Heather Buck, Aaron Engebreth, Neal Ferreira, and more, accompanied by the Odyssey Opera chorus and the acclaimed BMOP orchestra.

Civil Rights Opera "Is This America" Premieres at The Strand Sep 20-22

Celebrated for creating diverse, timely and relevant opera, activist performing arts&nbsp;company&nbsp;White Snake Projects&nbsp;(WSP) and its founder&nbsp;Cerise Lim Jacobs&nbsp;today announced the upcoming world premiere of&nbsp;Is This America?&nbsp;at Dorchester’s The Strand Theatre from&nbsp;Friday, September 20, to Sunday, September 22. This new 90-minute fully-staged opera celebrates the life and legacy of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer.&nbsp;Is This America?&nbsp;features performances by the Massachusetts-based Victory Players chamber orchestra alongside a small ensemble of singers with the lead role of Ms. Hamer played by mezzo-soprano&nbsp;Deborah Nansteel&nbsp;(Met Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago).&nbsp;The composer, 85-year-old&nbsp;Mary D. Watkins,&nbsp;has blazed the trail for other Black women composers in the field of opera. Haitian American queer woman&nbsp;Pascale Florestal&nbsp;stage directs.

Hailed by The New York Times as “a triumph of quality,” the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival (CCCMF) today announced its 2024 summer concert series, running from July 30-August 16, 2024. Celebrating its 45th season, the Festival presents 10 live performances over three weeks in five venues across Cape Cod. In what has become one of the region’s largest cultural events attracting thousands of concertgoers each year, this summer’s Festival is bursting at the seams with creativity and virtuosity. Prominently showcasing acoustic sounds, this year’s Festival is centered around the string quartet. Hailed for creating diverse, timely and relevant opera, activist opera company White Snake Projects (WSP) and its founder Cerise Lim Jacobs follows up its fall mainstage production of MONKEY: A Kung-Fu Puppet Parable with the second installment of Let’s Celebrate!, an annual series comprising four 20-minute operas that supplement traditional holiday programming with stories that more closely mirror the demographics of the Boston area and its diverse community. This season’s operas expand the meaning of celebration to include not only holiday festivities, but also the intersection of identities: gender, race, culture, LGBTQ, and/or religion. Each performance will follow a free pre-show panel discussion about the joys and challenges of intersectionality during the holidays.
