Finding Bright Film Festival - Yo (Love is a Rebellious Bird) post-screening discussion

13FOREST Gallery is pleased to invite you to a special reception hosted in partnership with the <a href="https://www.findingbrightfilmfestival.com/">Finding Bright Film Festival</a>. Following the screening of <a href="https://www.theyofilm.org/">Yo (Love is a Rebellious Bird)</a> on Saturday, November 7 at 12 pm at the <a href="https://www.capitoltheatreusa.com/">Capitol Theater</a>, 13FOREST Gallery will host an interactive event featuring Yo’s filmmakers Anna Fitch and Banker White joined in conversation by local puppeteer <a href="https://www.sarahnolen.com/">Sarah Nolen</a>. Starting at 1:45 pm, the public is invited to visit the gallery across the street from the theater at <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/167A+Massachusetts+Avenue?entry=gmail&amp;source=g">167A Massachusetts Avenue</a> to discuss their views of Yo, and the host of topics it raises about life, memory and creativity. The creative team behind the film will share their insights into everything from puppetry and its symbolic and expressive powers, to the lives of people in Yo and how the movie's artistry evolved. In addition to a special appearance by Robin Frohardt’s puppet of Yo herself, a sample rod puppet by Ron Binion will also be at the event, so attendees can try their hands at bringing a three-person puppet to life.

Me and You - a conversation with the artists and a collaborative performance by composer and cellist Eden Rayz

Join us on Saturday 10/24 from 4-6 pm for You and Me - a conversation with the artists of Tandem. One of the most rewarding aspects of our long-running practice is the relationships we have cultivated with and between our artists. To commemorate our twentieth anniversary, we have curated Tandem as a collaborative exhibition to highlight these relationships and celebrate the breadth of our artists’ creativity. Artists were organized into pairs, some who had worked together before and others who had known each other only in passing, to collaborate on a piece for the show. Each group of artists has taken a unique approach to their partnership, making work that is unified thematically, stylistically or literally, as some groups chose to merge their practices into a single work. As always, we were blown away by the talent and passion of our artists, and honored that they would work on this ambitious project with us. As an added layer of collaboration, at this event Eden Rayz will perform improvised responses to the work in the show. Rayz is a celebrated composer, cellist, instrument designer, and extreme vocalist known for immersive performances that function as individuation rituals. Refreshments will be served at 4 pm, and the talk will begin around 4:20 pm. Extremely limited seating is available, so please be prepared to stand for the duration of the event. Opening Reception - Tandem

Join us on Friday, 9/18 from 6-8 pm for the opening reception of Tandem, a collaborative exhibition celebrating 20 years of 13FOREST. This year 13FOREST Gallery has reached a milestone twentieth anniversary. In 2006 we opened our doors on Forest Street in Medford Square, and two years later moved to our current location in Arlington. Our mission has always been to magnify New England’s finest contemporary artists. One of the most rewarding aspects of our long-running practice is the relationships we have cultivated with and between our artists. To commemorate this important year, we have curated Tandem as a collaborative exhibition to highlight these relationships and celebrate the breadth of our artists’ creativity. 13FOREST would not be what it is today without the incredible artists who show with us, but we also would not have made it to this remarkable anniversary without the support and enthusiasm of our community. Tandem is a thank you to everyone who has helped us reach our twentieth year.

Show and Tell: Blocks, Plates, Screens and Stones

Join us on Saturday 8/29 from 4-6 pm for Show and Tell: Blocks, Plates, Screens and Stones - a demonstration of printmaking techniques with Andrew Stearns of <a href="https://newimpressionsprintstudio.com/">New Impressions Print Studio</a>. In conjunction with our current exhibition, Working Backwards, which highlights the work of fifteen printmakers, Andrew Stearns (one of the featured artists) will take us step-by-step through the process of creating a print. Printmaking is a highly technical process that can be tricky to understand; Stearns will demonstrate the tools and techniques that a printmaker employs to help us visualize the process. A reception with refreshments will begin at 4, and the demonstration will start around 4:20 pm. Extremely limited seating is available, so please be prepared to stand for the duration of the event. Pressing Engagement - a conversation with the artists of Working Backwards

Join us on Saturday August 1 from 4-6 pm for Pressing Engagement, a conversation with the artists of Working Backwards. Featuring the work of 15 outstanding local printmakers, Working Backwards celebrates the breadth of techniques and creativity expressed in contemporary printmaking. It is a remarkably versatile medium, capable of a range of visual expression from fine line work to painterly ink application, and it demands a technical prowess that sets it apart among artistic modes. While mediums like painting allow for revision throughout the process, for printmakers there is no returning to a previous step in the print once the ink has been laid. Despite, or perhaps because of, these restrictions, artists have been using printmaking processes for centuries to produce beautiful, provocative, informative and humorous work that is a marvel of technical skill. A reception with refreshments will begin at 4, and the artist talk will start around 4:20 pm. Extremely limited seating is available, so please be prepared to stand for the duration of the event. Opening Reception - Working Backwards

Join us on Saturday July 18 from 4-6 pm for the opening reception of Working Backwards, a group exhibition of 15 outstanding local printmakers, celebrating the breadth of techniques and creativity expressed in contemporary printmaking. Printmaking is a remarkably versatile medium, capable of a range of visual expression from fine line work to painterly ink application, and it demands a technical prowess that sets it apart among artistic modes. When creating the matrix for a print, printmakers must render the image in reverse so it will print in the correct orientation. Artist Robert Rauschenberg related this method of seeing in reverse to his dyslexia, remarking on how it was advantageous to his printmaking: “I already see things backwards! You see, in printmaking everything comes out backwards so printing is an absolute natural for me. It is difficult for a lot of artists to do prints because they draw one way and can’t imagine it the other way.” Working backwards, printmakers envision a final image that must be broken into layers, by color and in reverse - an exacting process with little room for error.  Image credit: <a href="https://13forest.com/borianakantcheva/">Boriana Kantcheva</a>, Moths, two-plate etching, aquatint, monotype

Outside|In - Go Fish! Celebrating the intrepid herring of the Mystic River with community art and poetry by Terry Carter and Steve Rapp

This spring <a href="https://artsarlington.org/">ArtsArlington</a> partnered with the <a href="https://mysticriver.org/">Mystic River Watershed Association</a> to create a participatory mural project which utilizes the creativity of our local community to celebrate the return of the herring to the Mystic River. The project, called <a href="https://artsarlington.org/go-fish/">Go Fish!</a>, involved community members painting 2,000 fish, which have been installed in groups on storefronts in Arlington for the public to discover and appreciate.&nbsp; 13FOREST Gallery has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with ArtsArlington, and as a part of this project we are hosting an event at the gallery on Saturday June 13 from 4-6 pm to celebrate the herring installation on the Edith M. Fox Library, which includes fish made by our 13FOREST artists. To mark the occasion, Public Art Curator Cecily Miller will provide some insight into how she developed this project, and then local poets <a href="https://brownskinnedpoet.net/">Terry Carter</a> and <a href="https://artsarlington.org/beehive-anthology/">Steve Rapp</a> will present poems inspired by our local waterways.

Storytime: Practiced Lives

We are honored to welcome back R. Galvan and Magda León for another performance in their Storytime series. Join us this Saturday April 25 from 4-6 pm for Storytime: Practiced Lives. Galvan and León first performed Storytime in 2025 as a part of our exhibition <a href="https://13forest.com/transition-of-power-2025">Transition of Power: 2025</a>. That performance, called Removable Lives, involved Galvan and León recreating the experience of an unaccompanied minor being interrogated by US passport control. In the latest incarnation of this project, Practiced Lives, two artists, one as a child and one as a parent, present unrelated characters and animate an exchange inside the gallery. The child will speak to the parent about current events and other stories, while the parent prepares a meal and cleans the space. There will be a reception with refreshments starting at 4 pm; the performance will begin around 4:20 pm, with time for questions for the artists afterwards. Seating is very limited, so please be prepared to stand for the duration of the event.

Likeness - a conversation with the artists of Material Self

Join us on Saturday 4/11 from 4-6 pm for Likeness, a conversation with the artists of Material Self, a group exhibition exploring still lifes which act as self-portraits. In his foundational text&nbsp; The Principles of Psychology&nbsp;(1890), American philosopher and psychologist William James introduced the concept of the material self, which manifests through the environment we create for ourselves, encompassing our clothing, possessions, family, friends, work – all that we call “ours” becomes an extension of identity. Through this lens, the objects we consider important can offer unique and intimate insights into who we are.&nbsp; For&nbsp;Material Self&nbsp;we asked our artists to create a still life that acts as a self-portrait. Through the juxtaposition of different meaningful objects, the works in&nbsp;Material Self&nbsp;compose complex and subtle stories, allowing the artists to share aspects of their personality, cultural identity and artistic values. Making Sense of Art and AI

Please join us on Saturday 2/21 from 4-6 pm for Making Sense of Art and AI - a conversation about the use of generative AI in artmaking and its implications for artists with <a href="https://13forest.com/steve-bennett/">Steve Bennett</a>, <a href="https://13forest.com/catherine-graffam/">Catherine Graffam</a> and <a href="https://13forest.com/nina-wishnok/">Nina Wishnok</a>. The advent of generative AI has challenged many of our notions about how we define art, the role art plays in our society, and our definitions of skill and originality. We have asked three artists who represent a spectrum of opinions about the use of generative AI in artmaking to help us understand the impact of this new technology. We will begin the event with a short reception and refreshments, and the talk will start around 4:30 pm. Very limited seating is available, so please be prepared to stand for the duration of the event.
