Beautiful Disruptions; Assoc.Artists' Exhibition

Beautiful Disruptions showcases the work of Boston Sculptors’ 14 Associate Artists. Many of the featured artists formally or conceptually explore the concept of disruption in their work for purposes ranging from the physical, philosophical, and political, to the ephemeral.

Svoronos, Better Together; Lougee, Sanctity of Nature

Lougee continues her material investigation of post-consumer plastic debris, creating poetic dialogues about the divinity of nature and the persistence of waste. In Sanctity of Nature, Michelle Lougee offers a series of dystopian reliquaries, pairing natural objects with transformed plastic in uncanny collections displayed as altars. Svoronos’ work posits a series of intimate interactive encounters that bring viewers together; where communication and collaboration is essential to the art experience and our differences and disagreements no longer matter. In a culture increasingly divided by media, beliefs and politics, “Better Together”&nbsp;pushes back against the progressively extreme, reactionary conversation surrounding our contemporary American culture.

Flight Lessons (Tien), Loftings (Schön)

Wen-hoa Tien blends storytelling, symbolism, and natural materials, Flight Lessons explores the universal human desire for freedom, uplift, and transcendence The installation features abstract bird-like sculptures—hand- formed from clay—perched on trapezes, suspended from branches, or climbing toward invisible heights. Ellen Schön exhibit features 3D printed ceramic sculpture and vessels, Inspired by diverse cultural traditions, Schön’s recent ceramic work alludes to both mathematical symmetries and the human figure. Loftings, the title of the show, refers to&nbsp;the process of creating a surface by connecting a series of curves.

Feldman Fellowship 10th Anniversary Exhibition

Boston Sculptors Gallery presents the Feldman Fellowship 10th Anniversary Exhibition, featuring 20 artist recipients of the eponymous award launched by the Arts &amp; Business Council of Greater Boston in 2015. Showcasing the talents of this diverse and dynamic group of regional artists, the exhibition offers innovative new work exploring themes ranging from social justice, to identity politics, and immigration through sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, ceramics, and illustration. The Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists is endowed by painter, printmaker, and educator Walter Feldman (1925 - 2017). A renowned abstract expressionist, Feldman long held the goal to support young artists with opportunities for professional recognition and growth. He taught at Brown University for 54 years. The Fellowship is unique in that it is not juried by a panel, but by a single juror who is designated each year.

Esperando/Waiting, Valdez; Grace and Grit, Raja

Both artists hale from far away lands. Raja’s sculpture and video look at women’s work. Her work is composed of hair, iron and brass.&nbsp;Both artists cast and carve suitcases. Valdez stone sculpture of suitcases examine her feelings of being split between two countries. She is also showing charcoal drawings.

O'Leary: Unmanned Vessel, Lee: The Ties That Bind

The Unmanned Vessel, Hillel O’Leary’s debut solo exhibition at the Boston Sculptors Gallery, centers on an immersive site-specific installation of an unearthed queer futurist doomsday bunker. While O'Leary looks forward, Lee looks back at ancestors, 4 generations. The Ties That Bind, Jaeok Lee’s debut solo exhibition at Boston Sculptors Gallery, draws on ancient Korean traditions to explore regeneration, oppression, and the everyday burdens women carry.

"Topia" Goransson; "Snulpture", Zimmermann

Goransson makes hand-dyed felted works, which she creates in multiples and presents as immersive environments, offering a space of quiet optimism in which the viewer can engage. Zimmermann's sculptures are abstract, they suggest a range of narratives, from warfare, battles, and war machines, to nature, re-birth, and dreams of peace and harmony.

Boston Sculptors Gallery, Harries and Latiano

Both artists deal with scale in their work, Latiano scales the pyramids to miniature size while Harries scans and scales artists' chairs with a 3 d printer to create miniatures.

Frost, "Debris"; Colella, "Dangerously Close to Home"

Chris Frost investigates the tension between permanence and disposability, labor and ornament, and material excess and aesthetic restraint, the show features freestanding sculpture, mixed media wall works, and collage. Jodi Colella presents an overlapping discourse about craft, women’s work, power and feminism, Colella crafts domestic items made with humble materials, historic tools and quotidian labor into objects that distort traditional signals of comfort into a means of revealing discomfort.

La Pucelle, Zwart; Water Mgmt, Champagne

Boston Sculptor’s Gallery presents Cori Champagne: Water Mgmt, featuring a new series of functional garments addressing our most precious resource. Intended to navigate shifting hydrological cycles, Champagne’s hand-made clothing resembles streetwear. Boston Sculptor's Gallery also presents Christina Zwart, her exhibition draws inspiration from the unlikely pairing of the heroic figure of Joan of Arc and the ancient, tenacious horseshoe crab. Today, horseshoe crabs are still at war with humans who use them as bait and harvest them for their blood. Both were and continue to be sacrificed—one for the survival of her kingdom and the other for the preservation of humanity.”

Numinous, Dewart; Sea Dreams, Fine

Murray Dewart’s Numinous, featuring a meditative collection of sculptures crafted in bronze, stainless steel, and aluminum. Dewart’s practice embraces both traditional and cutting-edge methods, combining lost wax bronze with computerized water jet technology. For Fine, the close and quiet observation of snorkeling also provides a meditative process. Informed by her knowledge of both sea and land flora, her complex, multifaceted hybrid forms flow freely between the terra and fluid environments

Transmissible (Shepley), IYKYK (Abrams)

Boston Sculptors Gallery presents Christopher Abrams: IYKYK, featuring a new series of small-scale sculpture based on iconic landmarks and forgotten histories in the Boston area. Julia Shepley’s ever evolving iconography of marks and layered surfaces serves to visually translate her experience of light, shadow, and sound as they move through space, and is layered by time and memory. &nbsp;

Straka "Biological Tithing", Olds Goldie "About Face"

While Olds Goldie’s female figures have always manifested strength and determination, they now embody an even greater sense of fortitude in their carriage and demeanor. The show also features a series of ceramic heads created by shaping hollow built forms from the inside out. Much to the artist’s surprise, male faces evolved alongside the female portraits, and unexpected—yet welcome—relationships, connections, and dialogue ensued.&nbsp; &nbsp; Straka’s sculptural works conjure clusters of cells, tissue, organs, and bones, while posing intimate questions about the anatomy of the human soul as witnessed by the aging human body. Straka expands on the concept, wondering whether molted cells could be collected and used to patch and protect skin as it becomes threadbare with age or illness. Alternatively, she muses at the possibility of cells and tissues—broken, stray, and lost—being sutured back together, the artist’s needle and thread becoming a means of longevity.

Opening reception Boston Sculptors Gallery 

Jonathan Latiano presents an installation mourning the loss of the white Rhino to extinction. Latiano fills the gallery with thousands of hand-cut black foam fragments to build an ominous landscape. While deeply unnatural in origin, the mounds of foam emulate natural formations reminiscent of volcanic stone, creating a perceived “human” environment. Christina Zwart's objects Encompass a yo-yo of emotions from rage and helplessness to playfulness and delight, the artist grapples with polarized politics and the horror of school shootings, while attempting to create a soothing salve with the fanciful and frivolous.
