Living in the Dark

What was life like before the electric light?&nbsp;Find out on an evening visit to the 1806 mansion at Gore Place. You’ll see the graceful Great Stairs, the lovely Oval Withdrawing Room, the Peacock Parlor, the Great Hall, bed chambers, sitting rooms, and more. Along the way, your guide will tell stories about living by candlelight and point out the many devices used to light the house in the early 1800s. The style and quality of the furnishings, the many Boston-built pieces, and the personal touches make this one of New England’s best historic house tours.

Laurel Martin and Mark Roberts

Enjoy a concert of wonderful Irish music with fiddler Laurel Martin and multi-instrumentalist Mark Roberts. Laurel’s lyrical fiddle playing is nuanced, sweet, and true to tradition. Mark Roberts’ flute and whistle playing is featured in the soundtrack to John Sayles’s film The Secret of Roan Inish. Join them for an evening filled with the joyful spirit of traditional music! This program takes place in the beautifully restored 1793 Carriage House at Gore Place.

Concerts in the Carriage House: New England Irish Harp Orchestra

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29 @ 7:00 PM The Irish harp is the original instrument of Irish traditional music and has a beautiful, etheric quality. This wonderful group of harpers, fiddlers, flutists, and singers performs traditional Irish tunes. The group is led by Regina Delaney, an Irish harper, singer, and dancer. This concert will take place in the beautiful 1793 Carriage House. Parking is free. Tickets:

Adam Hendey Carriage House Concert

A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Boston-based, multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer Adam Hendey has become one of the region’s most sought-after musical collaborators. Adam will take center stage with a program of beautiful traditional songs. Concert takes place in the 1793 Carriage House at Gore Place. Parking is free.

John Muratore Holiday Concert

Acclaimed guitarist John Muratore will perform a special holiday program in the beautiful 1793 Carriage House at Gore Place. Buttons and Bows

Buttons and Bows (Jimmy Kelly, banjo, guitar, vocals and Gwen Johnston, fiddle) grew from the session culture in Boston. Jimmy and Gwen first met at Fiddle Hell. They found common ground at the Druid Pub in Cambridge over their shared love of traditional, Old-Time, and Bluegrass tunes (plus any song that can make them laugh.) They are both working on solo albums and Jimmy Kelly’s music can currently be found on all streaming platforms. Along the way, hear the words of early 19th-century authors Jane Austen and Robert Roberts describing life on this lovely country estate. The Annual Corn roast at Gore Place

Celebrate the sweet corn season with a Corn Roast at Gore Place. Enjoy roasted corn freshly picked from local farms, live music with the Almost Grown-Ups, hayrides and activities for the kids. Bring a picnic blanket to stay and enjoy the music or you can takeaway. This is a great way to support local farms, local food and your local museum. Free admission, free parking. The Beet Boxers Concert in the Carriage House at Gore Place

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6 @ 7:00 PM The Beet Boxers is an old-timey string quartet that plays American roots music especially tunes from around Appalachia.&nbsp;Featuring banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and hurdy-gurdy, the band delivers a mix of toe-tapping instrumentals and soulful songs. Rich vocal harmonies and a solid groove make&nbsp;for fun that strictly shouldn’t be legal. This concert takes place in the beautiful 1793 Carriage House at Gore Place. Parking is free.

Concerts in the Carriage House: Jon Waterman

Join singer and songwriter Jon Waterman on a musical journey through the roots of American popular music! a program of songs and stories about the origins of the blues, rock, and country music.&nbsp;The program, which also features an accompanying slideshow, explores some of the fascinating characters and events that are part of that history and the role of music in our lives. This program is supported by a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Guitarist Ruth Rappaport plays the traditional music of America, Ireland, and the British Isles.&nbsp;Ruth has performed throughout New England with many traditional music groups.&nbsp;Ben Wetherbee is an exciting fiddler and harmonica player.&nbsp;Hold on to your hats because their music is hard-driving! The concert will take place in the beautifully restored 1793 Carriage House. Parking is free.

The World of Robert Roberts

Enjoy an evening tour of the 1806 Gore mansion highlighting the life and activism of Robert Roberts, author of the House Servant’s Directory (1827), Boston-based abolitionist, and onetime butler at Gore Place. The tour also highlights other activists and prominent Black leaders from the Boston area, some of whom worked with Roberts in the fight for equality in early 19th Century America. Along the way, you will see the beautiful Great Stairs, Peacock Parlor, Library, Withdrawing Room, Bed Chambers and Servant’s Quarters of the impressive 1806 mansion. Admission is free, but space is limited.&nbsp;
