Class Description This entry-level course introduces the fundamentals of drawing over four sessions. Students will explore a range of materials and techniques while developing core concepts such as contour, shape, volume, line, value, and color. Each class includes guided instruction along with open studio time for observational drawing to reinforce new skills. Faceted Stone Setting in Prongs

Learn faceted stone setting and level up your jewelry-making! In this foundational workshop, gain the skills to set gemstones in prongs. Class Description Prerequisite:&nbsp;Jewelry 101&nbsp;or&nbsp;equivalent&nbsp;experience; please email education@artisasnasylum.com if unsure if this class is for you. Bring your jewelry-making to the next level and learn the art of setting faceted gemstones! In just one workshop, you will learn foundational stone setting skills to set faceted gemstones in classic 4-prong heads. In order to focus solely on technique, we will set gemstones into sterling silver prongs soldered to copper sheet, rather than in finished pieces of jewelry. This will allow you to learn the fundamentals of faceted gemstone setting, after which you can use these skills in your own designs in the future. Intro to VCarve and the ShopBot CNC Router

Create a simple project in VCarve and the process of machining it, with hands-on training on the ShopBot. Multisession Duration:&nbsp;9 hrs completed over 3 days.&nbsp;By purchasing a ticket, you are committing to attend all meetings included in the multisession. Class Description Prerequisite:&nbsp;Prior experience with a CAD or vector drawing software is helpful, but not required. Learn to use the Asylum’s ShopBot CNC Router and the VCarve Pro design and drawing package to design and machine 2D projects from flat material like plywood. We'll work through a simple project to explore cutting shapes, engraving surfaces, and machining pockets, as well as what processes are best on the ShopBot and which are more easily done with other woodworking tools. The Asylum’s ShopBot is a PRSalpha 96×48 model with full 3-axis CNC capability and an 8ft x 4ft x 6in work envelope. It can cut wood, plastic, plywood, MDF, and other materials. This class meets three times for three hours each meeting. We will work through creating drawings that can generate tool-paths for machining; how to operate the ShopBot itself without damaging the machine or yourself; how to attach your raw material to the machine bed; and what kind of bits to use for various materials. Each student will have hands-on time on the machine in the second and third sessions to practice actual machine operation. Sand Casting 101

Learn the ancient art of Sand Casting metal! Take home a small bronze item such as a medal, pendant, or bottle opener, plus casting skills! Class Description Learn the ancient art of Sand Casting metal! For anyone from total beginners to those who simply want a refresher and/or to learn their way around the Artisans Asylum Casting Shop. Students will cast and take home a small bronze item such as a medal, pendant, bottle opener, or ornament. Participants will leave this class with the knowledge needed to enjoy sand casting at Artisans. We will cover the entire process: starting with an original pattern, packing Petrobond sand into a 2-part mold, melting and pouring bronze with the Electromelt crucible, removing sprues, cleaning sand off, and sanding, as well as casting shop best practices. We will be casting only in ancient bronze during class, yet this class prepares students to use the A2 Casting Shop to create items like jewelry, components, and small sculptures in a variety of shop-approved metals including silver, bronze, brass, and more! The class covers the skills needed to take Artisans Asylum Tool Tests for: Sand Casting and the Electromelt. Students may optionally bring a pattern of their own to cast in ancient bronze, if it is feasible to cast using a 2-part mold, eg, no undercuts. Volume of pattern should be around a cubic inch or less. A small selection of premade pattern items will be available to all students, so bringing one is not required. Some finishing such as filing and sanding may remain to be done after the class. Intro to 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing

In this intro class, you'll take the first step to 3D printing by learning to slice, melt, and extrude your own plastic creations. Class Description This introductory course is for anyone who wants to get into 3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing. Specifically, you will learn how to use the Prusa printers in the Digifab lab, a type of fused deposition modeling printer. By the end of the class, you'll learn about designing parts for 3D printing, slicing parts, and exporting GCode to the printers so they know where to move. The class will also include testing on the machines so that you can start printing whatever you like within the constraints of these machines. Intro to Stained Glass: Make a Silly Bird Suncatcher

Learn the fundamentals of stained glass by designing your own silly bird suncatcher! Class Description In this beginner stained glass workshop, students will make a finished “Silly Bird” suncatcher while learning the fundamentals of stained glass. We will cover studio safety, glass selection, pattern use, basic glass cutting, foiling, soldering, finishing, and hardware attachment. This class is designed for complete beginners and emphasizes a calm, supportive, step-by-step experience. Intro to Kintsugi (Japanese pottery repair)

Unleash your creativity and learn the art of Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese pottery repair technique, in our hands-on workshop. Class Description Kintsugi is the Japanese tradition of pottery repair. In this art, broken pieces are reassembled, and cracks are highlighted rather than hidden. When joined with the traditional urushi lacquer, repairs can take weeks or even months as each curing step can require 2-7 days in the muro (a humid curing box). In this class, we will use a quick-cure epoxy, allowing you to go home at the end of the day with a final piece. This is a nice way to get started since urushi lacquer is so time-intensive - and slightly hazardous! 3D Felting 101: Squishy Birds Edition

Bird lovers unite! This is an official call to action for the lovers of all things round and feathered. Class Description We need more Borbs! Whether you’ve held a felting needle before or not, all experience levels are welcome to join this quest! In this workshop, you will be guided by an experienced borb artist through creating a soft and squishable needle-felted bird(species of your choice). Advanced FDM 3D Printing

This is a deep dive into 3d printing, from basic printer maintenance to slicer settings to multicolor and multiple material printing! Class Description The world of 3d printing is expanding with increasing access to multiple color and tool changing printers yet many hobbyists and makers still use a select few settings available to them- whether you have access to a basic printer or a new Bambu this is a great way to learn how to unlock little used settings available to you. This is a deep dive into 3d printing, from basic printer maintenance to slicer settings to multicolor and multiple material printing. The majority of this class will be in a classroom setting with the Prusa and Bambu slicer softwares and examples of slicer setting results. Learn how different settings affect the properties and appearance of a part. This class will also cover how to use the AMS on Bambu printers including the paint function inside the Bambu Studio. The materials fee for this class is $15.&nbsp;This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo. We're excited to partner with Peter Mui and the existing Fixit Clinic network and the City of Boston's Environment Department to bring you Artisans Asylum's second Fixit Clinic! Fixit Clinics are do-it-together community-based exploration workshops staffed by volunteer Fixit Coaches who generously share their time, tools and expertise to consult with you on the disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair of items. Bring your broken belongings — electronic gadgets, vital appliances, cherished toys, bicycles, fabric items, jewelry etc. — for assessment, disassembly, and hopefully repair! Fixit Coaches will be available for consultation: we will provide workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item. Whether you fix your item or not, you'll learn more about how it was manufactured and how it worked, ready to share your new-found confidence and insight with your friends, neighbors, and the community at large.

Introduction to the Machine Shop (MS101)

This class, designed for people with little or no experience, will prepare students to start working independently in our machine shop. Class Description This class is designed for people with little or no machine shop experience. It will prepare students to get started in the making of relatively simple metal parts, covering the operation of the drill press, the metal cutting bandsaw, the arbor press, pedestal grinder and bench vise. Students will be given a brief tour of the shop showing them where the various machines are located, and where various tools may be found. *This class includes Tool Testing on the following tools: Bench vise, Band Saw, Drill Press, Arbor Press, and Pedestal Grinder. Learning Objectives The beginning section of the class will address:<ul><li>General shop safety</li><li>Shop etiquette</li><li>Shop layout</li></ul>The middle section of the class will address:<ul><li>Using the bench vise in cutting and shaping material</li><li>Cutting stock on the bandsaw; feeding the work</li><li>Using the drill press; holding the work, speeds, lubrication</li><li>Shaping metal on the grinder; ventilation, holding the work, cooling the work</li><li>Forcing parts together with the arbor press; guiding the process, accessories</li></ul>Each of the above operations will be first demonstrated by the instructor, then executed by each student under the instructor’s guidance and supervision. The final section of the class will include:<ul><li>Opportunity for review and further instruction as needed to ensure that all the students feel comfortable working on their own</li><li>As time allows, further exploration of shop capabilities</li><li>Students will graduate from the class equipped with the knowledge and confidence to begin working independently on their own projects in the Machine Shop.</li></ul>Instructor - Jeff Zimmer Jeff Zimmer is a mechanical engineer who collects and repairs antique clocks and watches and is currently engaged at the Asylum building a a residential pipe organ. His earliest machine shop experience occurred in graduate school where he designed and built a scale model of a nuclear power plant steam valve to analyze an acoustical instability. Tear Away Costume Mechanics

Learn how to take your clothing from normal regular garment - to sturdy, repeatable, and effective tear away clothing! Multisession Duration:&nbsp;6 hrs completed over 2 days.&nbsp;By purchasing a ticket, you are committing to attend all meetings included in the multisession. Class Description&nbsp; Do you want to remove clothing in a way that looks like magic, and impresses your audience? Do you fumble getting your shorts or panties over your ankles? Learn everything you need to know to take your clothing from normal regular garment - to sturdy, repeatable, and effective tear away clothing. Drag artist and Costume Designer SHERMAN will run you through the mechanics of effective tear away clothing, complete with demonstrations of the fixtures and notions needed for specific reveals. The class will be 2 classes long, and you will leave the class series with a functional tear away garment that you made yourself! They have been working on costumes for 20 years, and has been especially interested in the mechanisms of tear away costumes. They will guide you through techniques that are suitable for novice sewists, as well as more sophisticated tailoring techniques that create the most sturdy and seamless garment possible. They have performed in the burlesque, indie wrestling, and drag scenes in Boston. They have created many tear away garments for themselves and other people, for a variety of unique applications. As a left handed, ADHD, disabled person, they bring a personalized teaching style that considers different learning styles, and project goals. Target Audience Sewing experience is nice, but not required. Students should bring at least one garment that you would like to turn into a tear away costume. Teenage students that are vetted members of the drag or A2 community should contact shermanburlesque@gmail.com if interested in taking this class!
