Juneteenth Unlimited: Blackness, Buttons, and Flag-Making Galore!

Get ready for a summer celebration of freedom, resilience, and hands-on creativity -- it’s Juneteenth Unlimited with the Boston-based social justice project Wee The People! In this interactive workshop, we'll explore the story of Juneteenth, the oldest commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Come honor the joy and&nbsp;resistance of Black Americans then and now – with special flag-making crafts celebrating the exhibition of artist Beau McCall! Buttons On! marks the first-ever retrospective for creative artist, Beau McCall. Proclaimed by American Craft magazine as “The Button Man,” McCall creates wearable and visual art by hand-sewing clothing buttons onto mostly upcycled fabrics, materials, and objects. Showcasing pieces from McCall’s nearly forty-year career, the exhibition explores McCall’s mastery of the button and commentary on topics such as pop culture and social justice.

Wee Wear The Crowns: April Vacation Week edition!

Join Wee The People for a high-energy, kid-powered, art-making event where ALL families can celebrate Black identity, Black experience, and unapologetic Black JOY: Wee Wear The Crowns! Inspired by iconic painter Jean-Michel Basquiat -- who changed the world of contemporary art and used crowns to honor Black heroes in his work -- Wee Wear the Crowns is a community collage activity like no other, with gems, pompoms, African scrapbook patterns, and wall-to-wall images of Black culture for kids to create their very own gold or silver crown. To get ready for our crown-making, kids will get a burst of inspiration with a Wee The People teach-in and storytime reading of the picture book "Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat." Portraits in Color: Celebrating Blackness with Wee The People!

Because Black History Month is EVERY month! Join Wee The People for an activity-filled celebration of freedom fighter, political organizer, and giant of Boston's Black history, Harriet Hayden.&nbsp; In the mid-1800s, Harriet and Lewis Hayden turned their Beacon Hill home into a refuge and major headquarters of the anti-slavery movement. Two portrait photo albums gifted to Harriet during this time -- now on view at the Boston Athenæum -- offer a rare glimpse into a vast network of Boston's Black activists and organizers, at a time when Black Americans began to use photography to reclaim their stories, identities, and lives.&nbsp; Portraits in Color will feature an interactive read-aloud of the award-winning picture book "Take A Picture of Me, Mr. Van Der Zee!" followed by an art-making activity creating Black-affirming picture frames for our own portraits.
