Hundred-Year Book Debate of 1926

You're Invited! Join the Associates of the Boston Public Library for the Hundred-Year Book Debate, a free hybrid event exploring the lasting literary impact of three bestsellers from 1926: 📖 The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway – championed by scholar and curator Dr. Hilary Justice 📖 The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes – championed by literaryperformer Regie Gibson 📖 Winnie-the-Pooh – championed by author and professor Jackie Horne Boston radio host Kennedy Elsey will moderate this lively debate, culminating in an audience vote to crown the best book of 1926! "Faces of Phillis" a Staged Reading and Panel Discussion

The<a href="http://www.associatesbpl.org/"> Associates of the Boston Public Library</a> is proud to present Faces of Phillis, a free staged reading and panel discussion, as the fifth installment of the annual Pierce Performance Series. The one and only performance will take place on December 4th, from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM in the Boston Public Library's Rabb Hall. Faces of Phillis will celebrate Phillis Wheatley Peters on the 250th anniversary of the publication of Phillis's groundbreaking book Poems of Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. A recording of the event will be available for only one week on Vimeo (December 6th - December 13th). The three-part evening will feature: 1 . A staged reading of "Faces of Phillis" by British-Nigerian playwright <a href="https://www.phillis-wheatleys-london-adventure.com/about/">Ade Solanke</a>, and directed by Regge Life. The reading will dramatize key moments from Phillis Wheatley Peters’ life. A talented ensemble of actors will portray historical figures, including Phillis Wheatley Peters, Obour Tanner, John Peters, Scipio Moorhead, and Elizabeth Freeman.  2 . A panel discussion moderated by <a href="https://www.birchtreeproductions.company/about">Lisa Rafferty</a>. The panel will feature Ade Solanke, our playwright, <a href="https://meredithbergmann.com/about/">Meredith Bergmann</a>, the sculptor for the 2003 Boston Women’s Memorial, and <a href="https://royallhouse.org/about-us/mission-board-and-staff/">Kyera Singleton</a>, the Executive Director of the Royall House Museum. 3 . A dramatic poetry reading by the City of Boston’s Poet Laureate and BPL Trustee, <a href="https://www.porshaolayiwola.com/bio">Porsha Olayiwola</a>. Porsha will perform a dramatic reading of one of Phillis’s poems, as well as her own work inspired by Phillis.

Associates of the BPL | Writer-in-Residence Welcome Reception and Reading

<a href="https://www.associatesbpl.org/">The Associates of the Boston Public Library</a> is elated to announce that Danielle Emerson has been awarded the 2023-2024 <a href="https://www.associatesbpl.org/events-and-programs/writer-in-residence-program/">Writer-in-Residence</a>. Emerson's winning proposal is an anthology of ten short stories that seamlessly blend firsthand experiences with well-researched backgrounds of Diné (Navajo) culture. The stories will include themes of culture, tradition, growth, grief, home, community, queerness, and identity. Originally from Shiprock, NM, on the Navajo Nation, Emerson currently resides in Providence, RI.  There will be a welcome reception and reading on Tuesday, October 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Abbey Room at the BPL’s Central Library. The event will usher in Danielle Emerson and celebrate our outgoing Writer-in-Residence, Rhonda DeChambeau, who recently announced that her debut novel written during her residency will be <a href="https://rhondadechambeau.com/news-events/">published</a> by Holiday House in a two-book deal. Both writers will share excerpts from their respective manuscripts and reflect on their unique writing journeys.
