Mark-Making from Nature

Join us at the Overlook Gallery for a mark-making workshop led by artists Anne Barnes and Caroline Sirois! Working with images from Botanical Shakespeare by Gerit Quealy and illustrated by Sumie Hasegawa Collins; Hildegard’s Healing Plants; and assemblages of live and dried plants; participants will draw, discuss and share interpretations of nature. Plants for Healing

Bring a plant – one from your home or a found plant in your neighborhood, maybe even a weed. During our community gathering, you will each add your plant to a small healing garden that has been created in the gallery. We will draw both live and dried plants, as well as make assemblages using dried plants, paper and debris. Sharing stories about plants, gardens, nature and healing is welcome. All supplies provided – just bring a plant to contribute if you can! -- This program is part of rooted in ruins, an artist residency project by Caroline Sirois coordinated by Unbound Visual Arts and held at the Overlook Gallery. The Lost Paintings Launch Event

Join us for an event introducing The Lost Paintings, a Prelude to Return, an exhibition curated by Joëlle Tomb, Rula Khoury, and Haidi Motola presented at the Overlook Gallery in Fall 2025. The Lost Paintings is an imagined recreation of the last exhibition held in Palestine by Palestinian-Lebanese artist Maroun Tomb, which opened on November 29, 1947 in Haifa. The 1947 opening coincided with the very day in which the UN approved the Partition Plan of Palestine, igniting the Nakba and the forced displacement of some 750,000 Palestinians including Tomb and his family. The fate of the 53 oil paintings presented in the exhibition, as well as most of Tomb’s pre-1948 body of work, was lost to the war and its pillage. The Lost Paintings will convene 53 artists from across Palestine and the diaspora to each create their own interpretation of a single lost painting from the original exhibition, based on the few remaining historical records – the invitation to the 1947 opening and an inventory of the paintings that were displayed in it. This introductory event will include:<ul><li>exclusive insights about some of the original archival artwork</li><li>a storytelling performance by Lebanese singer-songwriter Yamane</li><li>an artist talk with Sara Mraish-Demeter and panel moderated by Jessica Hernandez</li><li>a wine selection from the region</li><li>branded merchandise to support this artistic initiative</li></ul><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-lost-paintings-coming-in-fall-2025-registration-1265311543889?aff=oddtdtcreator">Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP soon!</a> -- Street parking available around the gallery. Opening Reception

In A Realm for Reflection, Sebastian Gonzalez contributes to broader conversations on climate change by examining specific sites of environmental transformation using digital media. Whether focusing on the bacterial makeup of the Charles River in Boston, the melting glaciers of the Tolima volcano in Colombia, or rising sea levels around coastal cities, Gonzalez's body of work calls attention to dramatic shifts in topography and worrisome variations in climate. Yet in addition to highlighting various transnational environmental concerns, Gonzalez finds ways to more closely involve the viewer, and himself, in the work – going beyond simply identifying our role in manufacturing the crisis, and instead facilitating a closer engagement with the content, the digital media that articulates it, and the outdoor spaces that many of works were presented in initially.

Performance - Moon Unit and SUTUR

Boston-based duos Moon Unit and SUTUR offer a night of experimental music! Moon Unit starts it off with improv using cello and saxophone while SUTUR rounds it out with live electronics.

Fluid Form Workshop

Facilitated by Lee Collilouri, this workshop will focus on developing organic fluid shapes using different depths, colors, shading, and a wide range of detail. A variety of drawing materials will be supplied such as chalk, oil pastels, and colored pencils. Refreshments provided and please feel free to join the workshop any time between 2-4pm - drop-ins welcome!

Touching Collage Opening Reception

Join us for the opening reception for&nbsp;Touching Collage, our new exhibition at the Overlook! Exhibition Statement: Touching Collage&nbsp;is a group exhibition of fifteen artists whose works explore the titular idea materially and conceptually. They’ve not only revealed a diverse array of aesthetic interests by working in media such as sculpture, video, VR, artist books, photographic collage, and mixed media painting, but their works have collectively generated four central themes: poetry, narrative, and the archive; materials found, sourced, and collected; fragments sutured, fastened, and embedded together; scenes physical and digital, real and reworked.

Experimental Music by Moon Unit

Join us at the Overlook Gallery (located on the lower level of the large historic church) for a rich night of contemporary classical music and experimental composition by Moon Unit (Olivia Katz and Steph Tamas)! The program includes pieces for solo saxophone and solo cello by Raven Chacon, Marcos Balter, Alex Mincek, and Helmut Lachenmann.

Opening Reception - Moving and Working Through

In this exhibit, Yildiz Grodowski, Erin Palazzolo Loparo, and Jennifer Jean Okumura utilize abstraction as a type of movement – a formless form that through the language of gesture, composition, and scale, functions as a way of navigating the world and communicating their experiences within it. With a physicality and embodied practice guiding each artist’s approach, abstraction offers a mode of understanding the world with particular attention toward the bodily, the intuitive, and the mindful. Whether it be spiritual growth, a connection to place, or radical change following a transformative life event, the works in the exhibit serve as a reminder of the individual and social components that shape the creation of a piece – even if they aren’t immediately visible or concretely represented in the work: Grodowski’s background in dance and focus on improvisation, Palazzolo Loparo’s familial attachments and profession, and Okumura’s personal artistic values and Buddhist-Catholic heritage. Yet even as they’re influenced by the specific details of their lives, they create scenes that feel spacious, wide, and expansive. They take the particular and the significant, and proceed to magnify it up to scale.

A Gathering for "Obsolescence: Living with Fewer Things"

In the spirit of Obsolescence, our current exhibit at the Overlook, join us for an afternoon reliving past memories and finding resonances in our wonderful artworks on view! Curator's Statement: This exhibit, featuring representational and non-representational artwork from 13 UVA artists, presents ideas and images related to the changes in technology, goods, services and even ideas. As these changes occur, obsolescence occurs and this phenomena results in waste and inefficiency. The primary reasons for items becoming outdated are related to changes to technical, functional and stylistic features. Changes may also be planned. Though change and impermanence for everything is inevitable, obsolescence hastens the amount of unwanted waste and things. Artists were asked to think of how obsolescence has affected them personally or as part of society. The art delves into this experience or conveys an aspect of that experience and is meaningful to the artist and perhaps the audience. Artists:&nbsp;SD Armour, Mary Barton-Lech, Paula Pitman Brown, Stephen Brown, Lee Collilouri, Giti Ganjei, Mary Gillis, John Higgins, Bob Greene, Sam Price, Adriana G. Prat, Allida Warn, and Andrew Zou.

Voyagers of the Self Reception

The opening reception for Voyagers of the Self, an exhibit featuring the work of Brighton High School AP Art Students! The 11th and 12th grade AP Art class was asked to push the boundaries of self-portraiture, investigating the interior and exterior of who they are, how they perceive themselves, and how others may perceive them. Through personal inquiry and extensive planning, these student artists have created self-portraits using a variety of 2D media.

Drawing Urban Ecology

In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between humanity and nature inspired by the process drawings of Allida Warn. Participants will ground themselves by doing a short walking meditation and using phone-photography and drawing in the park outside the Overlook Gallery.&nbsp;

Mandala Workshop in the Gallery

Learn from an Art Therapist the freedom and release of creating a therapeutic mandala (sacred circle). Using an array of watercolor pencils, we will create 3-ring mandalas mindfully – using lines, shapes, colors, symbols and words to reflect on what we feel, know and hope in our lives.
