Expanding Viewpoints Symposium 2026

Grievance and Governance in a New Populist Era The&nbsp;<a href="https://expandingviewpoints.tufts.edu/">Center for Expanding Viewpoints in Higher Education</a>&nbsp;(CEVIHE)&nbsp;welcomes you to its inaugural student-led conference, designed to convene a select group of juniors and seniors from Tufts University and other universities throughout the Greater Boston area for sustained, serious engagement with contested questions about civic life, politics, and culture. The Symposium emphasizes intellectual rigor, structured disagreement, and student leadership, combining academic insights, conversations with civic and business leaders, and high-quality meals throughout the program.&nbsp;There is no cost to participate, but&nbsp;attendance is by application only. The 2026 Symposium will explore how contemporary populist movements on both the left and the right have reshaped American politics, democratic governance, and debates over liberalism, representation, and institutional legitimacy. Students will engage in challenging discussions on affordability, higher education, immigration, and healthcare, examining how political grievance and institutional strain manifest across key domains of contemporary public life. The conference will feature a keynote fireside chat with post-liberal writer Sohrab Ahmari and democratic socialist writer Bhaskar Sunkara, focused on the cost-of-living crisis, the future of work, and competing diagnoses of institutional decline. Sunkara is the founding editor of Jacobin, the president of The Nation magazine, and the author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality (Basic Books, 2019). Ahmari is the U.S. editor of UnHerd, the founder and former editor of Compact magazine, and the author of Tyranny, Inc.: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty — and What To Do About It (Forum Books, 2023). Conference participants will be gifted complimentary signed book copies. Policy Responses to Gambling, Recreational Drugs, and Pornography

The&nbsp;<a href="https://expandingviewpoints.tufts.edu/">Center for Expanding Viewpoints in Higher Education (CEVIHE)</a>&nbsp;at Tufts University welcomes you to a panel discussion exploring the ethical and social consequences of modern vices—sports betting, marijuana, and online adult content—and what responsible public policy should look like in response. This conversation brings together researchers and practitioners to map the trade-offs among individual liberty, public harms, and political feasibility. The panelists include&nbsp;Shaleen Title, former top Massachusetts cannabis regulator and&nbsp;Distinguished Cannabis Policy Practitioner in Residence at The Ohio State University’s Drug Enforcement and Policy Center;&nbsp;Charles Fain Lehman,&nbsp;senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute&nbsp;for Policy Research&nbsp;and senior editor of City Journal; and&nbsp;Isaac Rose-Berman, fellow at the American Institute for Boys and Men, focused on gambling research and policy. The <a href="https://cevihe.org/">Center for Expanding Viewpoints in Higher Education</a>&nbsp;(CEVIHE) welcomes you to&nbsp;a conversation and Q&amp;A with journalist&nbsp;Haviv Rettig Gur&nbsp;exploring contemporary Israeli and Palestinian political dynamics, the future of Gaza, regional geopolitical shifts, and the broader implications of the conflict. This conversation on&nbsp;The Configuration of the Middle East after the Gaza War&nbsp;will be held in a free-flowing format emphasizing open inquiry and audience engagement.
