Join a special screening of Living in Pryde, a GBH News documentary by Jack Doyle, Emily Judem, and Robert Tokanel. Following the screening, Pascale Florestal, associate artistic director, Front Porch Arts Collective, will be in conversation with residents of The Pryde. Living in Pryde is a powerful short documentary following residents of The Pryde—New England’s first LGBTQ+ welcoming, affordable senior housing community. As LGBTQ+ rights face renewed challenges, the film highlights a generation that came of age without basic legal protections. Residents draw on a lifetime of resilience, reflecting on surviving the AIDS crisis, fighting for same-sex marriage, and coming out as transgender. Located in a former public school in Boston’s Hyde Park, The Pryde is both a refuge and a target—a place where community becomes a powerful force in the ongoing fight for civil rights and equality. A lifetime of courage. A community that endures.

LESSONS IN DRAG: A Queer Manual for Academics, Artists, and Aunties,  a book talk with Kareem Khubchandani

Join&nbsp;Lessons in Drag&nbsp;author Kareem Khubchandani in conversation with Kris Manjapra as they discuss the power drag has to hold together precarious communities in uncertain times.&nbsp; The audience will experience&nbsp;firsthand the power of drag with live performances by Boston’s most illustrious artists, Candace Persuasion and Chanel The Angel.&nbsp; Lessons in Drag&nbsp;brings to life a vibrant and thought-provoking dialogue between scholar Kareem Khubchandani and his drag persona LaWhore Vagistan. In the book, Khubchandani delves into the lessons LaWhore’s drag practice offers about academia—shaping his approaches to research, teaching, and writing—while Vagistan reveals how Khubchandani’s scholarship influences her performances, inspiring her understanding of fashion, music, divas, and aunties. Together, their reflections and conversations weave a compelling tapestry of drag’s instructive power. Witty, bold, and deeply personal,&nbsp;Lessons in Drag&nbsp;is both an invitation to explore drag as a practice and a celebration of its transformative potential.&nbsp;

Register Here <a href="https://bpl.libcal.com/event/15334441">https://bpl.libcal.com/event/15334441</a> In September 1974 – two days after her 14th&nbsp;birthday – Leola Hampton boarded a school bus that would launch her into the heart of one of the most divisive and defining moments in Boston history: court-ordered school desegregation. She and her older sister, Linda Starks-Walker, were bused from their home in the predominantly Black Roxbury neighborhood into the predominantly white, working-class South Boston neighborhood. They navigated a violent and virulently racist high school experience so scarring that a half-century later, they are only now beginning to discuss it with each other. ‘Never Cried’: Boston’s Busing Legacy - a short documentary from GBH News - examines how this trauma has been passed to younger generations, and what this means for the future of a city that, like Leola and Linda, is still healing 50 years after the busing crisis.

Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Starr discusses his new book, American Contradiction: Revolution and Revenge from the 1950s to NOW

&nbsp;How did Americans come to elect Barack Obama—and then Donald Trump? Those choices capture what Paul Starr calls the American contradiction.&nbsp; The whole truth about America, Starr argues in this new history of the United States since the 1950s, has never been contained in one consistent set of values or interests. Our nation was born in the contradiction between freedom and slavery. Today it is beset by a contradiction between a changing people and a resisting nation, a nation with entrenched institutions that have empowered those who fear the changes and look to restore an old America of their imagining. Starr will be in conversation with Randall Kennedy. Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School, where he teaches courses on contracts, criminal law, and the regulation of race relations.&nbsp; There will be a book signing after the event.

With the flair of a performer and the insight of a culinary historian, he will reveal how both song and sustenance carry the stories of migration, resilience, and creativity, leaving an indelible mark on global culture. Smalls will be in conversation with Charla Jones, founder and CEO of eu2be, an award-winning skincare brand inspired by centuries of global beauty traditions and created to honor all bodies and skin types, and named after her world-traveling aunt Eugenia.

Screening of Fannie Lou Hamer's America

Fannie Lou Hamer’s America is a new and original documentary told through the public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist. Known for being&nbsp;“sick and tired of being sick and tired” and her impassioned pleas for equal rights, Fannie Lou Hamer helped change laws and was very influential in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Besides her political advocacies during the 1960s, Hamer was also a humanitarian, providing clothing, housing, educational opportunities for the poor, and food for thousands through her Freedom Farm Cooperative and Pig Bank.
