Inside-Out Gallery Show: Reflecting on “RE”

<a href="https://somervilleartscouncil.org/creative-placemaking/inside-out-gallery/">CVS Windows</a>&nbsp;– One Davis Square (Map #E1) April 23 – May 12 Art is transitional, ebbing and flowing with the changing tides. As artists, we are observers and respond by our surroundings. This year, Somerville Open Studios explores this concept with its open-ended existential theme “RE” and its various uses.&nbsp;“Re”, by definition, can mean “again,” “back,” or “anew” as well signaling the repetition of an action (e.g., redo, rebuild) or a backward motion/reversal (e.g., reflect, return).

Ball Square&nbsp;<a href="https://nbrhoodproduce.com/">Neighborhood Produce</a>&nbsp;Windows Corner of Broadway and Boston Avenue (Map #E3) April 20 – May 11 “Resist”, according to the dictionary, is “something (such as a coating) that protects against a chemical, electrical, or physical action”.&nbsp;We&nbsp;resist&nbsp;in art to make something more interesting and beautiful (like using wax to stop the spread of a glaze in ceramics). We&nbsp;resist&nbsp;in life to stop the spread of hurtful practices and ideas.&nbsp;We invite you to resist in any and all senses of the word in our fourth annual Neighborhood Produce Locavore show.

SOS 2026 First Look Exhibit <a href="http://somervillemuseum.org/">Somerville Museum</a> – 1 Westwood Road (Map #E4, Trolley stop “I”) April 17 – May 9 First Look is a stunning overview of Somerville Open Studios and a great way to plan your artist visits for SOS weekend! The museum becomes a space where visitors can see Somerville’s diverse artist community on display. With more than 180 featured artists’ pieces, you’re sure to discover a new favorite. Hours, before and after SOS: Thursdays 2-7 pm, Fridays 2-5 pm, Saturdays 12-5 pm SOS weekend hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm (opening one hour before the rest of SOS)

RE NEW: Recycled Art Show

<a href="https://www.kmwschoolofpainting.com/">The KMW School of Painting</a> 62A Summer Street (Map #E5) April 25 – May 17 Saturdays and Sundays, 12-6 pm Reception: Saturday, May 2, 6-9 pm This show explores how discarded and repurposed materials can be reimagined into compelling sculptural forms and textures that speak to environmental awareness and artistic innovation. It is part of the City of Somerville’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.somervillema.gov/sustainavilleweek">SustainaVille Week</a>.

<a href="https://somervillepubliclibrary.org/library/hours-locations/west-branch/">Somerville West Branch Library</a>&nbsp;Atrium 40 College Avenue (Map #E2) April 27 – May 11 Art by Somerville children and teens will be displayed in the atrium of the Somerville West Branch Library, during&nbsp;<a href="https://somervillepubliclibrary.org/library/hours-locations/west-branch/">regular library hours</a>.

Artwear: The SOS 2026 Fashion Show

The term Artwear refers to clothing and other wearables designed as conceptual or fine art. Artwear operates outside of the boundaries normally presented in fashion to favor an approach that prioritizes style and vision. This year’s SOS fashion show will once again be held at the Crystal Ballroom in Davis Square on Thursday, April 30. The Crystal Ballroom is directly above the Somerville Theatre. Doors open at 6pm for cocktail hour with the show beginning at 7pm; seating is first come, first served. The venue will have a full bar and runway seating. The event is free for the public to view original textile art by Somerville artists!

SOS 2025 Alternate Worlds Show

This juried show will be the first art exhibit at Narrative. Books can be portals to different realities. Stories can empower, heal, connect, transport, and persuade. They can portray brighter possibilities, bear warnings about the future, or tie us to our ancestors &amp; root us in our heritage. This exhibit will showcase the transporting power of written &amp; spoken narratives, translated into visual forms of alternate worlds created by Somerville artists. Proudly immigrant-woman owned &amp; operated, with an emphasis on amplifying marginalized voices and experiences, <a href="https://www.narrativebookshop.com/">Narrative</a> is an independent bookshop offering a welcoming space for finding connection through community-minded events and a curated selection of new and used books across various genres. This show will be open to a variety of works, including large and small 2D artwork, as well as sculpture and hanging works.

SOS 2025 First Look Exhibit

This show is open to all 2025 SOS registered artists. We strongly recommend viewing this artist choice non-juried group show – many studio visitors plan their trip based on what they see here. A great sampling of works by our member artists. The Somerville Museum is fully accessible, with an elevator at street level. Exact hours tentative. SOS 2025 Locavore Show: Sustenance

“Sustenance”&nbsp;is often considered to be a fancy word for food. It also extends beyond nutrition to encompass support and spiritual nourishment. In these difficult times in our country and our world, what sustains us?&nbsp;What keeps us going physically and spiritually? This juried small works show will be displayed in the corner window of the Ball Square&nbsp;<a href="http://nbrhoodproduce.com/">Neighborhood Produce</a>&nbsp;location at the intersection of&nbsp;Broadway and Boston Ave. It will still be visible outside of the listed store hours.

SOS 2024 Locavore Show: The Book As Art: Unbound

<a href="https://www.somervilleopenstudios.org/sos-2024-locavore-shows/" target="_blank">SOS 2024 Locavore Shows</a> This year, SOS will present three small Locavore group shows at various locations around Somerville. At the&nbsp;<a href="http://somervillepubliclibrary.org/" target="_blank">Somerville Public Library</a>, 79 Highland Avenue, the theme is&nbsp;The Book As Art: Unbound. We’ll show art that uses the book as content and/or medium to explore and transform our idea of what a book can be. The show will be on display from&nbsp;May 1 – 29&nbsp;during regular library hours.
