Roxbury Russet Festival

Join us on Saturday, October 11 for one of the only apple festivals held in Boston proper! Best of all, it’s FREE. The Roxbury Russet Festival celebrates an apple cultivar dating back to the seventeenth century, right in Roxbury. Festival activities include crafts, a scavenger hunt, Ask A Master Gardener table, apple cider pressing, Touch-A-Truck with the Boston Fire Department, and resources from other local organizations. Free apple cider donuts and popcorn. For 21+ attendees, Democracy Brewing will be hosting an onsite beer garden during the event. Dudley Farm Day

We’re so EGG-cited for this year’s Farm Day at the Shirley-Eustis House! Join us for a day of farm animals, wool weaving, butter making, seed planting, craft-making fun. We’ll be joined by representatives from a number of fellow neighborhood organizations and local farms to help us spread the word about local social and gardening resources, as well as ways you can shop local for your produce, meats, and more. This event is free to attend and open to the public. In the event of rain, the festival will be held in the Shirley-Eustis Carriage House at 15 Rockford Street. Questions? Harmonies of Majesty: Music from the Court of King George III

The contrast between the musical traditions of Colonial America and those of Great Britain during the reign of George III is striking. While the colonists were embracing folk songs and ballads to express their frustrations and aspirations for independence, British loyalists and the Monarchy remained avid patrons of classical music. Performed in the country estate of a prominent Loyalist family, Harmonies of Majesty: Music from the Court of George III provides a glimpse into the cultural and ideological landscape of the time when music echoed the hopes, dreams, and conflicts of those loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution. Through compositions by Mozart and Haydn performed by acclaimed fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz, and context provided by historian Robert Allison, this program offers a nuanced understanding of the social and political dynamics of the American Revolutionary era through the lens of music. From 12pm - 4pm, attendees will find:<ul><li>Crafts and activities (BINGO is back with some fun prizes!)</li><li>Snacks and sweet apple cider from local orchards</li><li>Local resources on farming and where to find fresh, seasonal produce in your community</li><li>Demonstrations of cider pressing on a replica historic cider press</li><li>Live music from the Seth Meicht Jazz Trio</li><li>A visit from 19th century Roxbury pear whiz Enoch Bartlett</li><li>And more!</li></ul>Most exciting, it’s all FREE to the public thanks to support from GrowBoston! AND, the fun doesn’t stop when the festival ends. Right at 4pm, we’ll be hosting a 21+ craft beer tasting with brews from Long Live Roxbury, including a small-batch graff beer created exclusively for the festival featuring Terpenes from Rooted In! Once you grab some beer, we'll have a seat for a lecture by Helen Humphreys, author of The Ghost Orchard: The Hidden History of the Apple in North America. Parents are welcome to bring their little ones - wristbands will be issued at the door for those above 21 who will be participating in the tasting. Online registration for the craft beer tasting is highly encouraged, as space is limited. Registration is $35 per person and includes beer tasting, a dinner buffet, and admission to the lecture.

Echoes of Libertè: Music from the French Revolution

During the American Revolution, French support played a pivotal role in securing American independence from British rule. Motivated by a desire to weaken their longtime rival, Britain, and inspired by the ideals of liberty espoused by the American cause, France provided critical military assistance, financial aid, and naval support to the Continental Army under General George Washington. The success of the American Revolution inspired the French Revolution by demonstrating the possibility of overthrowing monarchy and establishing democratic governance based on principles of liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty. This captivating musical program takes you on a historical journey, exploring the revolutionary spirit, the struggles of the people, and the transformation of an entire nation. Through a carefully curated selection of music by composers who adapted their lives and music to align with revolutionary ideals and sentiments, witness the emotional intensity and the ideological fervor that defined this pivotal period in history. Reception to follow. Limited Seating. This event is generously supported by the Society of the Cincinnati, America's oldest patriotic organization.

Brewing Up Diversity

Calling all beer enthusiasts and history buffs! <img src="https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tba/1/16/1f4e3.png">  Don't miss Brewing Up Diversity on May 11th! Beer historian Dr. Malcolm Purinton will moderate a panel of Massachusetts-based brewers who are leading the way in fostering diversity and inclusion in the craft beer space, both for brewery owners and operators, as well as beer lovers. Breweries participating include Long Live Roxbury, Roundhead Brewing Co., and Hot Plate Brewing Co.! As our goat friends would say, Dudley Farm Day is baaaaa-ck for its second year! Join us for a day of farm animals, wool weaving, butter making, seed planting, craft-making fun here at the Shirley-Eustis House. We’ll be joined by representatives from a number of fellow neighborhood organizations to help us spread the word about local social and gardening resources, as well as the long history of farming in Roxbury and Dorchester. Popcorn, lemonade, and pasteles will be available to snack on, and BYO picnicking is encouraged! This event is free to attend and open to the public thanks to the continued support of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
