A Tribute to El Divo de Juárez: Celebrating Día de Muertos

A Mexican tradition comes alive again as the Boston Pops returns to celebrate "Día de Muertos" – The Day of the Dead. Join us for an evening filled with music that honors this rich cultural heritage where life and death intertwine in a beautiful tapestry of remembrance and reverence.

The Phantom of the Opera 

Celebrate the centennial of the release of Rupert Julian’s 1925 silent film classic, starring Lon Chaney as the Phantom of the Paris Opera, with live organ accompaniment. Please note that this program is a solo organ accompaniment and does not include orchestra.

Accidentally brought back to life in Salem on Halloween night, three witches, known as the Sanderson sisters, attempt to steal the life essence from the town’s children so they can have eternal life. They are outwitted by a boy, Max Dennison, his young sister, Dani, and his girlfriend, Allison, and aided by a boy, Thackery Binx, who had been changed into a cat for trying to interfere with the witches centuries earlier. Released on July 16, 1993 and directed by Kenny Ortega, the film stars Bette Midler (Winifred), Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah), Kathy Najimy (Mary), Omri Katz (Max), Thora Birch (Dani), Vinessa Shaw (Allison).

Bernstein, Copland, and Prokofiev with Yuja Wang

Scintillating pianist Yuja Wang joins returning conductor Domingo Hindoyan and the BSO in Sergei Prokofiev’s technically challenging Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece that combines the composer’s sardonic humor with his gift for soaring melody. Two American works from the 1940s bracket the concerto. Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from his 1944 musical&nbsp;On the Town&nbsp;features music referencing such hits as “New York, New York” and the wistful “Lonely Town.” Aaron Copland’s Third Symphony, premiered by the BSO in 1946, includes the uplifting “Fanfare for the Common Man.”

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is a beloved work and an emotional journey through fate into triumph and transcendence.

Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 and Adams Violin Concerto with Augustin Hadelich

The BSO’s 2025-26 artist in residence Augustin Hadelich brings his passion and flair to John Adams’ Violin Concerto. Composed in 1993, the piece is a rhythmically vital and harmonically rich concerto that won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is a meditation on fate; though Tchaikovsky himself wavered in his assessment of the work, its passionate themes, rich orchestral colors, and triumphant finale have cemented it as a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire.

Beethoven Missa Solemnis | Boston, Symphony Hall, & the BSO in 1900

Beethoven’s&nbsp;Missa Solemnis&nbsp;stands tall among the greatest sacred choral works, a monumental setting of the Mass text and the first piece performed in the then-new Symphony Hall in 1900. From soaring solo lines to striking contrasts — like the prayerful Agnus Dei interrupted by martial fanfares — Beethoven’s vision combines dramatic orchestration, virtuosic choral writing, and profound emotional depth.

Mahler Symphony No. 4 | Boston, Symphony Hall, & the BSO in 1900

The BSO begins the exploration of Boston in 1900 with two pieces that were composed at the same time Symphony Hall was being built. Influenced by impressionist painting and finished in 1899, Debussy’s three contrasting&nbsp;Nocturnes&nbsp;— Nuages (“Clouds”), Fêtes (“Holidays”), and Sirènes (“Sirens”) — paint magnificently colorful musical scenes, with Boston’s premiere all-women vocal group the Lorelei Ensemble joining the orchestra in the haunting final movement. Composed in 1900, Mahler's Symphony No. 4 lives on the sunnier side of his repertoire, but nonetheless vacillates between morbid and triumphant, seductive and serene. The final movement features solo soprano in a beguiling setting of the folk poem “Heavenly Life."
