Intro to Kintsugi (Japanese pottery repair)

About this event Instructor - Quantum Wei Quantum first started practicing Kintsugi in 2021 when he wanted to fix a broken souvenir plate (two pieces, epoxy + liquid gold leaf). Since then, he has ventured deeper into the art by working on more complex breaks and utilizing traditional materials (urushi lacquer), and constructing a muro (wooden curing box). During his latest trip to Japan, he took a workshop with kintsugi master <a href="https://www.kintugi.com/">David Pike</a>. For more, visit <a href="https://www.kintsugi.boston/">kinstugi.boston</a>. Class Description Kintsugi is the Japanese tradition of pottery repair. In this art, broken pieces are reassembled, and cracks are highlighted rather than hidden.&nbsp; When joined with the traditional urushi lacquer, repairs can take weeks or even months as each curing step can require 2-7 days in the muro (a humid curing box). In this class, we will use a quick-cure epoxy, allowing you to go home at the end of the day with a final piece. This is a nice way to get started since urushi lacquer is so time-intensive - and slightly hazardous! Material Fee The materials fee for this class is $20. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts cash. This is a bring-your-own pottery class. The instructor can provide pottery for an additional $10 fee ($30 total per person). Class Goals&nbsp; Learn about traditional Kintsugi and how urushi lacquer and the muro curing boxes were used.&nbsp; R﻿epair a piece of broken pottery using Epoxy and liquid gold leaf. Material Supplied Epoxy, liquid gold leaf, painter's tape, sandpaper, rubber bands, etc.&nbsp; Students Should Bring Your own pieces of broken pottery to repair. Keep it simple (not too many pieces). Intro to 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing

Instructor - Quantum Wei Quantum has over a decade of experience with 3D printing. Back in college, he and a friend constructed a Prusa Mendel from scratch. Since then, he has used 3D printing in various capacities: to make 3D printer parts, reverse osmosis membrane spacers, and art pieces. Quantum has three degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT and has extensive teaching experience. Class Description This introductory course is for anyone who wants to get into 3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing. Specifically, you will learn how to use the Prusa printers in the Digifab lab, a type of fused deposition modeling printer. By the end of the class, you'll learn about designing parts for 3D printing, slicing parts, and exporting GCode to the printers so they know where to move. The class will also include testing on the machines so that you can start printing whatever you like within the constraints of these machines. Material Fee The materials fee for this class is $10. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash or through Venmo or Paypal. Enameling Glass on Copper @ Artisans Asylum

About this event Instructor - Barbara Marder Barbara has been enameling since 1980 and has been a member of the International Enamelist Society since 1987. She is a retired visual arts educator from the Somerville Public Schools, has an MFA from Boston University, a BA from Skidmore College, and has studied with masters of enameling. Barbara supervised a student-created enameled mural at the John F Kennedy School in Somerville and has exhibited her work at many venues. Class Description In a combination of two enthralling materials, learn to fuse glass to copper in this fast-paced one-day workshop! Vitreous enamel is a type of glass used for centuries to create brilliant luminescent artworks. In just a few hours, students will create a jewelry piece or miniature painting using enameling techniques like wet packing, sgraffito, and stencils. Work will be kiln-fired. Material Fee The materials fee for this class is $15. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash or through Venmo or Paypal. Class Goals  Participants will get tool-trained in the enameling shop to work there independently. They will learn to use the enameling kilns and equipment. Safety and studio maintenance will be emphasized. Participants will gain familiarity with basic enameling skills and will have a completed, wearable piece of enameled jewelry or a small piece of art. Information about enameling on silver or steel will be provided. Material Supplied All project materials will be provided except for a safety mask (REQUIRED for enamel dust).  Students Should Bring Participants must bring a safety mask (COVID mask okay) and an apron or old shirt Prerequisites  Students must be 16 years old or older. Any student under 18 years of age must be accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
