The Gottabees' stories reflect children's everyday aspirations, concerns, and emotional experiences. ​​We want children to know in their hearts that they, too, can make theater wherever they are and whomever they are. The Gottabees’ work has been performed in 19 states, 5 countries, for over 45,000 people and was awarded an UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence. As Puppet Showplace Theater’s Resident Artist, she performs regularly for youth and family audiences and teaches puppetry in camps, workshops, residencies, and evening adult classes. Her three original productions,&nbsp;The Fairy Tailor, Judy Saves the Day, and Lisa the Wise,&nbsp;are all<a href="https://www.puppetshowplace.org/touring">&nbsp;available to tour</a>. Sarah recently designed puppets for Little Uprisings’s&nbsp;My Night in the Planetarium, Metropolitan Chorale's&nbsp;The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore, and for Suffolk University's&nbsp;Loss of Breath: The Death and Life&nbsp;of Edgar Allan Poe. In addition to her work in puppetry, Sarah is an experienced filmmaker. In 2015, she received the Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship in support of her television pilot&nbsp;Treeples, a show geared towards empowering girls, which screened at film festivals across the U.S. Sarah earned her BFA in film from Southern Methodist University, and an MFA in Puppet Arts from the University of Connecticut.

In another tale, a young boy's attempts to fall asleep are interrupted by fantastical creatures from his dreams, who charge him with a daring mission! If he journeys to "a land within," can he help save the forests and end a war? Kids (and adults!) who love adventure stories and dreams will appreciate this story. These stories celebrate the power of imagination — "very much inspired by my joy of playing/performing with my daughter," says Dirk — and how our inner worlds fit into the larger world around us. About the Artist <a href="https://stringtheorytheater.com/">String Theory Puppet Theater</a> is a small puppet troupe composed of Dirk Joseph and his daughters Sequoia and Azaria Rose. They have been performing since 2016, starting at the Black Cherry Puppet Theater’s puppet slams in Baltimore, sharing the stage with veteran and new puppeteers, Since then they have continued to be a regular at Black Cherry’s puppet slams. String Theory has also performed at Baltimore’s Creative Alliance and in multiple venues in D.C., as well as public schools and house shows. String Theory Puppet Theater performs a variety of puppetry styles for children and adults, including hand puppets, rod puppets, crankies, shadow puppets, marionettes, and toy theater. Their shows employ various narrative structures, ranging from one act pieces to multi-act stories to talk show formats, and they also produce “sing-along” performances and scrolling abstract progression. One of their performances titled “For the Love of Cats and Dogs” was nominated in 2018 for the National Puppet Slam held in Atlanta. “For the Love of Cats and Dogs” is a hilarious satire punctuated with dark metaphors about the dethroning of the tyrannical leader of the free world. Dirk Joseph, founder of String Theory Puppet Theater is a professional artist, storyteller, and community arts facilitator. He has been teaching visual arts and theater, including puppetry, in the New York and Maryland public school systems for almost 30 years. Before forming String Theory Puppet Theater, he performed with Pierre Bennu as a puppet duo known as The Drapetomaniacs. In 2020 Dirk was part of Puppet Showplace’s first Creative Residency for Black Puppeteers.&nbsp;

About the Artist Puppeteer, puppet builder, and arts educator Brad Shur is the founder and lead artist of Paper Heart Puppets. Brad began performing as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. While earning a degree in film, he was a regular performer at late night puppet slams and with Big Nazo Puppets. From there, Brad went on to tour nationally with Wood and String Puppet Theatre and Vermont Puppetree. As a freelance puppet builder he created puppets for American Idol, Dolly Parton’s Dollywood amusement park, and for many theater companies. In 2009, he became the Resident Artist at Puppet Showplace Theater where he served as the lead teaching artist and touring puppeteer for eight years. During that time, Brad developed six original shows and revived several classic shows created by Paul Vincent Davis. In 2017, Brad left Puppet Showplace for Poughkeepsie, NY and founded <a href="https://www.paperheartpuppets.com/">Paper Heart Puppets</a>, dedicated to sharing and expanding the art of puppetry. He now tours nationally.

Get ready to marvel at his creations and groove to hip hop instrumentals produced by Omari “Hir-0” Hall of Detroit — and maybe even try your hand at manipulating one of the marionettes. Self-taught master puppeteer Tarish "Jeghetto" Pipkins became a puppeteer after a fateful meeting with Fred Rogers. Since then, his upbeat, inventive approach to puppetry has been seen everywhere from the Center for Puppetry Arts to a Missy Elliott video. This presentation was made possible in part by support from the Brookline Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Relations About the Artist <img src="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5321daaae4b0740a41873481/c7bfc583-5220-46ff-9f2d-b8cec2b8f974/53109544644_e4f4064169_o.jpg"> Tarish “<a href="https://jeghetto.com/">Jeghetto</a>” Pipkins is a master builder and puppeteer based in North Carolina. The stage name “Jeghetto'' is a nod to Pinocchio’s creator, “Geppetto,” and is a way to explicitly connect Jeghetto’s artistic self with his experiences growing up in a small steel mill town south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “To me, I’m confronting and knocking down stereotypes, and embracing that I am from the ghetto, I am from the inner city, but I’ve chosen this path, this unique path of puppetry,” Jeghetto said to WBUR in 2018. After working as a barber for many years, while also creating art, Jeghetto moved to North Carolina in 2005 and began working with Paperhand Puppet Intervention, a puppet theater company based in Saxapahaw, North Carolina. Since then, Jeghetto’s puppetry has continued to evolve and he has established himself as an innovative puppetry artist whose work can be both joyful and somber, and that centers the Black experience. His work ranges from the whimsical to the heart-wrenchingly real, and often looks back on history with a discerning eye while also looking towards the future. In 2018 Jeghetto brought his adult show Just Another Lynching: An American Horror Story to Puppet Showplace Theater, with support from the BU Arts Initiative. Some of his other work tells modern and futuristic stories, like The Hip Hopera of 5P1N0K10, which uses music, video, and found-object marionettes to spin the classic story of Pinocchio as an Afrofuturist parable about a robot that longs to be a real B-boy in a post-apocalyptic future. In addition to his own original productions, Jeghetto’s work has been featured in a Missy Elliot music video, in an Amazon Echo commercial, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and at Blackspace, a North Carolina-based Afrofuturism arts collective. He was also a guest on The Steve Harvey Show, and performed puppetry on The Voice and HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness.
