Common Time: A Workshop Day for Adults

Musicians of all levels have moments of doubt. We ask – could I join a chamber ensemble? Can I play this difficult piece? Do I really belong in a community orchestra or community band? Am I supposed to be here? With this afternoon of workshops, we’re here to say YES. Yes, we can create genuine belonging for everyone in an ensemble. Yes, you can find (or rediscover) meaning in your practice and playing. And yes, you can perform with confidence, offering your music as a gift for others. Come spend some common time with us and find out how! We hope that after these workshops, the next time you ask “Can I….” it’ll be a little bit easier to say “yes”. Workshop Schedule:

1:00 – 2:00 pm: Music Without the Velvet Rope: What It Feels Like to Belong in an Ensemble, taught by Belmont Community Orchestra conductor Marshunda Smith

2:10 – 3:10 pm: Meaningful Music Making: Going Beyond Just Showing Up, taught by Director of Music Therapy Cheyenna Eagle

3:20 – 4:20 pm: Experiencing Performing as a Gift! (Wait, what?), taught by violin faculty Sue Rabut

Learn more and register here!

Friday, April 10th, 2026: Adult Concert, 7:00pm Saturday-Sunday, April 11th-12th: concerts all afternoon and evening, with the 7:30pm concerts for advanced students! Learn more about signing them up here: powersmusic.org/mildred-freiberg-piano-festival/ More about the festival: The Mildred Freiberg Piano Festival was the catalyst for the founding of Powers Music School in 1964 and has become a tradition for students in grades K-12, with the recent addition of adult students on Friday night! Over the years, the festival concerts have celebrated both a student’s first performance and the exciting accomplishments of more mature artists. A variety of styles and teaching methods are presented through these performances in a non-competitive manner that stimulates the local music community. In 2004, it was with great honor that we renamed this long-standing Belmont Piano Festival after Mildred P. Freiberg. Mildred Freiberg was a highly esteemed pianist, educator, and mentor to many and was a former Powers Music School Board President and one of the founders of our School. We hope you'll join us to cheer on local piano students and here a great variety of piano music at these free concerts!

The Festival honors the memory of Joseph and Lise Stein, long-time Belmont residents who opened their home for joyous music-making several nights a week. Their contagious enthusiasm for chamber music continues to inspire our community, and their love of the genre lives on in this spectacular evening. The Steins’ living room was set up with scores, stands, and pianos – always ready for music! We’ll be transforming the concert hall into our own “living room” to inspire the comfort and encouragement of an evening of chamber music at the Steins’ house. We hope you will create wonderful memories celebrating beautiful music in this welcoming setting. The Stein Chamber Music Festival welcomes players of all ages and abilities, performing in groups of two or more players, from beginning students to amateurs and professionals. Each year the Festival is exciting, enjoyable, and always exceptional. We have had a wonderful contingent of younger performers in the past, and we encourage more to join in this year as well.
