We’re thrilled to invite you to our building and performance space for an evening of fun for all ages. All are welcome! Mildred Freiberg Piano Festival

Join us for a weekend-long celebration of piano students from all over the region! Friday, April 10th, 2026: Adult Concert, 7:00pm Saturday-Sunday, April 11th-12th: concerts all afternoon and evening, with the 7:30pm concerts for advanced students! Over the years, the festival concerts have celebrated both a student’s first performance and the exciting accomplishments of more mature artists. A variety of styles and teaching methods are presented through these performances in a non-competitive manner that stimulates the local music community. In 2004, it was with great honor that we renamed this long-standing Belmont Piano Festival after Mildred P. Freiberg. Mildred Freiberg was a highly esteemed pianist, educator, and mentor to many and was a former Powers Music School Board President and one of the founders of our School. We hope you'll join us to cheer on local piano students and here a great variety of piano music at these free concerts!

An Evening in G: Piano Quartets by Mozart and Brahms

See music through new eyes at the 2025-2026 A New Lens concert series! February’s concert features two exciting and emotional works for piano, violin, viola, and cello. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor (written 1785) will pull you in right away with its unison opening, soothe your soul with its second movement, and hold your hand and skip with you through the last movement. Afterwards, we’ll head to the Piano Quartet in G minor (written 1861) by Johannes Brahms, a piece full of soaring melodies, mysterious harmonies, and conflicting emotions. The Brahms quartet concludes with a finale so energetic and toe-tapping, you’ll be humming it all the way home! A New Lens concerts are free to attend, and all are welcome. A $20 suggested donation supports the series and performers. We are committed to improving access to our building for those with limited mobility. The school is in the early stages of this large and important project, but there is no formal timeline set for when it will be started/completed as of yet. The Festival honors the memory of Joseph and Lise Stein, long-time Belmont residents who opened their home for joyous music-making several nights a week. Their contagious enthusiasm for chamber music continues to inspire our community, and their love of the genre lives on in this spectacular evening. The Steins’ living room was set up with scores, stands, and pianos – always ready for music! We’ll be transforming the concert hall into our own “living room” to inspire the comfort and encouragement of an evening of chamber music at the Steins’ house. We hope you will create wonderful memories celebrating beautiful music in this welcoming setting. The Stein Chamber Music Festival welcomes players of all ages and abilities, performing in groups of two or more players, from beginning students to amateurs and professionals. Each year the Festival is exciting, enjoyable, and always exceptional. We have had a wonderful contingent of younger performers in the past, and we encourage more to join in this year as well.

“I want to play my favorite music, but it’s only possible with other musicians.” “I love playing chamber music, but I just don’t have time to get my friends together.” “I wish I had more friends who want to play music with me!” If any of the above sounds familiar, join us for a Chamber Music Reading Party at Powers Music School! This casual, one-time experience with chamber music will allow you to get to know other musicians in a fun, low-pressure environment. It’s a great way for students and musicians of all levels to prepare or sight-read chamber music pieces with other adults, have some refreshments, and meet other music enthusiasts. The Modal Mosaic: Exploring Connections Across Musical Cultures

See music through new eyes at the 2025-2026 A New Lens concert series! This concert is a great chance to hear many musical traditions in one place! Modal music – music that focuses on scales instead of chords – is often associated with Middle Eastern music. While it is common in the Middle East, modal music is actually a part of a wide range of traditions. The program will include modal – inspired music from a variety of cultures, including:<ul><li>Celtic dances and airs</li><li>Medieval European music</li><li>Bartok’s Romanian folk dances</li><li>Modern music drawing from Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, and Norwegian traditions</li></ul>Come listen to the similarities for yourself, and enjoy the reminder that we’re less different from one another than we sometimes think. Belmont Community Band Concert

All are welcome to enjoy a fun night of concert band music led by Conductor John McLellan and performed by your friends and neighbors. Selections will be announced at the concert, but expect to feel the energy and excitement of a stormchaser, a march, or even the rise and fall of a galactic empire! This event is free and open to the public.  John Dalton's Spheres of Influence: Reflections on Nature

See music through new eyes at the 2025-2026 A New Lens concert series! Powers Music School's percussion teacher John Dalton is also an active bandleader! He’ll be bringing his group Spheres of Influence to Powers for an evening of original compositions and jazz standards centered around the beauty of the natural world. John Dalton’s Spheres of Influence is a modular modern jazz ensemble that plays original compositions, as well as arrangements of jazz standards and popular repertoire. Since 2016, they have presented their unique sound at various venues, universities, and community centers, both as performers and clinicians. A World of Music: Workshop Day

Do you remember the first time you learned a new language? Maybe it was your Spanish class in school, or maybe a great K-drama inspired you to learn Korean. Or maybe you even took up Klingon after watching Star Trek. Real or fictional, it’s exciting to learn new ways to talk to each other! We communicate with each other through music, too! In these workshops, you’ll explore new musical “languages” and get an introduction to new ways of speaking, learning, and connecting. Step through our doors to learn new skills and rhythms from Latin America, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe – all without leaving Belmont! For students ages 10+ with strong understandings of reading music, rhythm, and musical concepts. Powers students and faculty – Free! For one day only, Powers Music School’s most popular event for families is back! Whether you’re just looking to expose your kids to music, or you already know you want them to develop a lifelong passion, our Fall Open House is a great way to learn which music class is the right fit for your family. Test out classes, talk to our faculty, try all kinds of instruments at the “instrument petting zoo,” see our facilities at 160 Lexington Street, Belmont, make a musical craft, meet other families, and enjoy a fun day of music together! Demos for early childhood classes with open spots, such as The Music Class® (ages newborn – 4), Dalcroze Eurhythmics (ages 3 – 8), group piano (ages 4 – 11), and Suzuki (ages 3.5 and up), will be held throughout the afternoon. Join us for our 2024-2025 Faculty Concert Series with a performance from String Department Chair <a href="https://powersmusic.org/people/karl-orvik/">Karl Orvik</a> followed by a reception for the community! Karl has always loved making mix tapes and playlists for people, and that’s what this program is: Karl’s playlist for the audience! From Bach to Hailstork, this playlist is three centuries in the making. The pieces, each written around 100 years apart from one another, all call out to Karl, and he hopes you’ll love them too! The program will include: Violin Partita No.3 in E major, BWV 1006 by J.S.
