Songs for Peace

The New England Philharmonic in collaboration with Chorus pro Musica, soloists, and children’s choir Voices Boston to offer Songs of Peace on the final concert of its 49th Season. The featured work is Krzysztof Penderecki’s Credo, a powerful choral and orchestral masterpiece that showcases Penderecki’s deep spiritual expression and innovative musical language, fusing faith, history, and modern musical sensibilities into an awe-inspiring sonic experience. The concert also includes Cantares by Carlos Carrillo, concluding his season-long introduction to the NEP family.

New Music New England, an annual NEP staple, showcases music by New England-based composers. This year’s concert celebrates the legacy of Northeastern University’s Daniel Godfrey with the world premiere performance of his Piano Concerto, featuring pianist Gloria Cheng. The NEP will also perform a newly commissioned work by Carlos Carrillo, along with world premieres of Alleles by Jason Huffman and Symphony in 3 Movements by Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s Curtis Hughes.

New England Philharmonic New Music Readings

The New Music Readings were established in 2024 by then Composer-in-Residence Eric Nathan and Music Director Tianhui Ng, and were directed by Eric Nathan for the first two seasons. Now under the direction of current Composer-in-Residence Carlos Carrillo, the program gives selected composers from the&nbsp;<a href="https://nephilharmonic.org/call-for-scores">Call for Scores Competition</a>&nbsp;the rare opportunity to hear their works performed by full orchestra, and guest mentor composers are invited to provide feedback and discussion on each work performed, as well as solicit feedback directly from the orchestral musicians. Composers featured will be Nicole Knorr, Steven Crino, Simon Rivet, and Thacher Schreiber, with Wang Lu and Eric Chasalow acting as Guest Mentors. Contact manager@nephilharmonic for free tickets.

New England Philharmonic Family Concert

The NEP spotlights its groundbreaking collaboration with the Multiverse Series and the Museum of Science for the world premiere of the orchestral version of Black Hole Symphony by Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Resident Composer, David Ibbett, at the annual Family Concert. This fusion of science and music transforms astrophysical data into a mesmerizing orchestral experience. Composed in collaboration with astrophysicists, the symphony translates the life cycle of black holes—from their formation to their dramatic interactions—into a rich and immersive soundscape. Performed live and enhanced with visual elements, Black Hole Symphony is both an artistic and an educational experience, celebrating the beauty of the universe through sound. The program opens with a pre-concert talk by Sheperd Doeleman, Harvard astrophysicist and director of the Event Horizon Telescope, who will share insights into the science behind the music. Also featured on the program are concertos with the winners of the annual Young Artist Competition, Maggie Bai and Valerie Bai. A post-concert instrument petting zoo and interactive science booths will offer hands-on opportunities to explore music and space.

Gathering Grounds

Setting the stage to open the NEP’s 2025-2026 Season, along with gathering to hear multiple voices and images, is the introduction of Carlos Carrillo as the NEP’s new Composer-In-Residence, with his piece The Gathering Grounds. 2025 Call for Scores winner Loren Loiacono’s feline-inspired Beanie’s Chapbook imagines her cat through a collection of miniature tone poems. NEP’s concertmaster and Boston-area favorite Danielle Maddon takes on soothsayer, sorcerer, healer, and pied-piper roles through the healing spells of Procession by Missy Mazzoli. The concert concludes with Modest Mussorgsky’s colorful Pictures at an Exhibition, walking us musically through drawings, paintings, and architectural sketches. A night of storytelling, spellwork, and sonic exploration awaits.

The dramatic&nbsp;Mathis der Maler&nbsp;from Paul Hindemith questions the role of the artist in an earlier politically complicated era. The season closes with Eric Nathan’s&nbsp;Open again a turn of light, which sets a text by Boston-based poet Sawako Nakayasu. New Music New England is an initiative of the New England Philharmonic that celebrates orchestral music from a diverse range of New England-based composers. This year’s concert recognizes the beloved Yehudi Wyner’s 95th birthday with a performance of his dazzling 1994 cello concerto, Prologue and Narrative, featuring cellist Sam Ou. Representing the next generation, Keeril Makan (MIT) invites us to Dream Lightly with a work that features electric guitar; Chaya Czernowin (Harvard) contributes a “large-scale miniature,” Once I blinked nothing was the same; and Marti Epstein (Berklee/Boston Conservatory) takes inspiration from Anne Tyler’s novel about a reclusive artist in Celestial Navigation. Additionally featured on the program is Bobby Ge’s Remember to Have Fun, a response to the pandemic year of 2020, which was selected as winner of the NEP’s 2024 Call for Scores Competition.&nbsp; Pay-as-you-Wish Tickets are available at nephilharmonic.org
