Borromeo String Quartet Guest Artist Award Concert 

One of the Borromeo's most-loved activities in their residency at the New England Conservatory is the audition process to select the Winners of the Guest Artist Awards. They greatly enjoy the week of collaboration in which every student who has entered the competition has a session playing and working together with the Quartet. Working with all of these students, and affording special recognition to those that are chosen as winners, is always an inspiring experience.

Faculty members from Jazz Studies and Contemporary Musical Arts present a wide-ranging program that highlights the breadth and depth of the departments with a diverse range of music.

NEC Philharmonia, led by conductor David Loebel, performs 56 Blows by Alvin Singleton, Mozart's Symphony No. 38, "Prague", and Mathis der Maler by Hindemith

Tuesday Night New Music 5 

The newest works from the next generation of composers. Tuesday Night New Music,&nbsp;a student-run, faculty-supervised concert series,&nbsp;was founded in the early 90s by Lee Hyla.&nbsp;It&nbsp;offers audiences the opportunity to hear the music of&nbsp;current New England Conservatory composition students, performed by their peers.&nbsp;&nbsp;This year the series is directed by student composers Peter Butler ’26 and Stellan Connelly Bettany '25 under the supervision of composition chair&nbsp;Michael Gandolfi.

NEC Symphony + Paul Biss: Verdi, Mendelssohn 

Paul Biss conducts the NEC Symphony in a performance of Verdi's Overture to "La forza del destino". Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 "Italian", and a concerto whose soloist is the winner of a NEC concerto competition.

NEC Piano Department: Fauré and His Students 

Each year, NEC's Piano Department marks an anniversary or celebrates a composer known for piano works.&nbsp;Students from the College and Preparatory School are then chosen to perform.&nbsp;This year, there will be three concerts centering on the music of Gabriel Fauré and his students.&nbsp;Tonight is the first of these performances. <a href="http://necmusic.edu/faculty/bruce-brubaker">Bruce Brubaker</a> is Curator of Piano Programming.

NEC Chamber Orchestra: Sowande, Perkinson 

Tonight the NEC Chamber Orchestra performs Fela Sowande's African Suite&nbsp;and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson's Sinfonietta No. 1. The NEC Chamber Orchestra&nbsp;was created to provide the students with an opportunity to apply the principals of chamber music in a small orchestral setting.&nbsp;The participants are chosen by audition at the beginning of the academic year and remain together throughout. As the ensemble rehearses and performs without a conductor, leadership responsibilities are rotated for every work performed. This affords the students an opportunity to develop communication skills, take responsibility for musical decisions and broaden their aural and score reading capabilities. Participation in the program also allows them to explore a wide range of the incredibly rich chamber orchestra literature. Donald Palma is the Chamber Orchestra's artistic director.

NEC Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds + Andrew McMahan, William Drury 

Guest conductor Andrew McMahan and William Drury, NEC's Conductor of Wind Ensembles, lead the NEC Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds in a program featuring Kurt Weill's Little Threepenny Music (Kleine Dreigroschenmusik), Husa's Smetana Fanfare, Omar Thomas' ('08 MM)&nbsp;Shenandoah, John Mackey's Aurora Awakes, and "Red Cape Tango" from Michael Daugherty's Metropolis Symphony. Andrew McMahan is the director of wind bands and associate professor of music at Lamar&nbsp;University. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting and music&nbsp;education and serves as the artistic director and conductor of the Wind Ensemble. He also&nbsp;oversees all ensembles under the purview of the Lamar University Wind Band Program,&nbsp;including the Jazz Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Pep Band and Marching Band. He also&nbsp;serves as the artistic and administrative director of the Lamar University Summer Band&nbsp;Camp as well as the founder and director of the annual Lamar University Honors Wind&nbsp;Symphony. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Prior to his appointment at Lamar University, McMahan served as the director of wind&nbsp;bands and associate professor at Cal Poly State University, a position he held from 2010-2017. He taught courses in music theory and conducting, as well as instrumental literature&nbsp;and rehearsal techniques. He also served as administrator, artistic director and conductor&nbsp;for the Wind Ensemble. During his tenure at Cal Poly, the Wind Ensemble&nbsp;performed&nbsp;internationally, including a 12-day performance tour of England, Ireland and Scotland in&nbsp;2013. McMahan and the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble also hosted the 82 nd annual American&nbsp;Bandmasters Association convention in 2016. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Before moving to California, McMahan served as the director and principal conductor of&nbsp;the University of Minnesota Campus Orchestra. Additionally, he often appeared as a guest&nbsp;conductor with the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Symphonic and University&nbsp;Bands. He also served as the announcer and for the 320-member strong “Pride of&nbsp;Minnesota” Marching Band. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;McMahan spent four years as the director of instrumental studies and instructor of&nbsp;secondary music education at Simpson College, just outside of Des Moines, Iowa. He also&nbsp;served as the executive director and founder of the Simpson College Big Band Jazz Camp,&nbsp;a week-long festival of jazz studies held each June. A native of North Carolina, McMahan earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education&nbsp;from Western Carolina University, Master of Music degree from the University of&nbsp;Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of&nbsp;Minnesota. He began his career as a high school music teacher in the suburbs of&nbsp;Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Perkin Opera Scenes 2 

Enjoy an evening of scenes in the&nbsp;intimate&nbsp;setting of&nbsp;NEC's Plimpton Shattuck Black Box Theatre. These concerts display the work that goes on daily in NEC's opera program, as faculty prepare student singers for performing careers. Perkin Opera Scenes at NEC appear under the generous sponsorship of longtime NEC supporter Winifred Perkin Gray and the Perkin Fund.
