The NBSO’s brilliant new concertmaster Emma Powell kicks off (literally!) the festivities with John Corigliano’s sassy STOMP for solo violin. Remember PDQ Bach? None other than Peter Schickele, whose quartet “American Dreams” invokes melodies that brought the nation together. Missy Mazzoli’s electric Lies You Can Believe In depicts the frenetic energy of a burgeoning metropolis while the super romantic piano quintet of Boston’s staid grande dame Amy Beach transports the listener to a realm of emotion remarkable – and still bold – in its sensual intensity.

Take a break from the everyday and treat yourself to an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and connection. &nbsp; The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of Madeiran Heritage invite you to Classical Strings &amp; Traditional Fados—a beautiful collaboration featuring the NBSO String Quartet alongside acclaimed Portuguese fadistas and musicians. Enjoy a cash bar, delicious pastéis de nata, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere under the pavilion. &nbsp; Doors open at 7 PM for drinks and conversation, with music beginning at 8 PM. Feel the pull of fate, the thrill of the unexpected, and the sheer force of sound wash through you. What begins as suspense will give way to a feeling of being fully alive.&nbsp; Yaniv Dinur, conductor Sydney Lee, cello Silvestre Revueltas: Sensemayá Antonín Dvořák: Cello Concerto Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 Marking his 10th season with the NBSO, Yaniv returns to his audition piece that got him the job—Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Opening with the “fate” motif, the eternal ballet composer’s most original symphony consists of numerous surprises, like an entire movement of just string plucking, cymbals and bass drum only in the last movement (making so much noise) and an unhinged piccolo solo, to name just a few. Sydney Lee returns to the NBSO to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, the Mount Everest of the cello repertoire. We open our season with Revueltas’ stirring Sensemayá, or as Yaniv likes to call it: “the Latin version of The Rite of Spring in seven minutes.”

Summoning dearly departed spirits Charles Ives: Hallowe’en (1906) Dimitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 73 (1946) Johanna Senfter: Piano Quartet in E minor, Op. 11 (1911) EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, violin Bryce Martin, violin Christopher Nunn, viola Leo Eguchi, cello Janice Weber, piano Charles Ives’s playfully frightful Hallowe’en sets the stage for a program of startling surprise. Composed in the aftermath of the second World War, Shostakovich’s wildly original third string quartet opens on a cheeky note. Ensuing movements describe a ghostly waltz before fierce “gunshots” introduce a musical battle; we hear an eloquent elegy for the war’s lost souls before a spooky cello solo recalls previous themes in a haunting finale. And who was Johanna Senfter, a cipher in the annals of musicology? Max Reger, the esteemed German pedagogue, considered her his finest pupil. Despite her prodigious output, Senfter’s self-imposed hermitry kept her name and works hidden from the world. Her spellbinding piano quartet reveals an imagination and intellect equal to those of her celebrated contemporaries. May she rise again!

Yaniv Dinur, conductor Randall Goosby, violin Gabriela Ortiz: Kauyumari Samuel Barber: Symphony No. 1 Johannes Brahms:&nbsp;Violin Concerto Rising star violinist Randall Goosby performs Brahms’ Violin Concerto, a piece of unmatched beauty, drama, and, of course, some Hungarian dancing. It is paired with music from the Americas—the intoxicating rhythms and sounds of Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, alongside Samuel Barber’s First Symphony, a tragic, poignant, and restless piece, written in one sweeping movement.

Feel the season come alive! Yaniv Dinur, conductor The Showstoppers Southeastern Massachusetts Youth Orchestra Round up your favorite people—kids, grandparents, neighbors, friends—and celebrate the season together at Holiday Pops. It’s festive, high-spirited, and just the right mix of laughter, nostalgia, and music you’ll be humming all the way home. The hall sparkles, the energy is contagious, and the music delivers that unmistakable holiday glow. The Showstoppers join forces with members of the Southeastern Massachusetts Youth Orchestra alongside Yaniv and your NBSO musicians for a feel-good celebration that brings every generation together. Choose your moment: the 3:30 PM concert is a lively, one-hour experience—perfect for families and younger listeners. The 7:00 PM performance lingers a little longer, letting you settle in and savor the full sparkle of the evening. Both are seamless and nonstop, with no intermission—just pure holiday joy from start to finish.

An all-Beethoven program commemorating the 200th anniversary of his death Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 12 No. 2&nbsp;(1798) Cello Sonata No. 4 in C Major, Op. 102 No. 1 (1815) String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major, Op. 130 (1826) Emma Powell, violin EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, violin Anna Griffis, viola Leo Eguchi, cello Janice Weber, piano This program spotlights three gems from the immense and precious treasury Beethoven left to posterity. An early, sparkling violin and piano sonata, dedicated to Antonio Salieri, twines lyricism and humor in delightful dialogue. A late cello and piano sonata breaks new ground in structure and virtuosity while maintaining a preternatural simplicity. Beethoven’s visionary Op. 130 quartet, a work that has mesmerized players, composers, poets, and listeners for two hundred years, closes the program on a note of transcendent awe and appreciation for this genius unique in history.

Because sometimes, what you need most… is to be transported. Yaniv Dinur, conductor and emcee This all-John Williams program surrounds you with music that has shaped generations, not just as soundtracks, but as emotional touchstones. Hearing these iconic themes vividly brought to life by a full symphony orchestra is an incredibly powerful experience. From the awe of Jurassic Park to the suspense of Jaws, the magic of Harry Potter, and the soaring hope of E.T., each piece opens a door back to imagination, nostalgia, and joy. After intermission, the journey continues with the adventure and heart of Hook and Indiana Jones, the quiet beauty of The Terminal, and the powerful, unmistakable themes of Star Wars.

The beauty, intensity, and transformation will leave you changed in ways you didn’t expect.&nbsp; Yaniv Dinur, conductor Alexander Korsantia, piano Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 Guillaume Connesson: Flammenschrift Maurice Ravel: Mother Goose Maurice Ravel:&nbsp;La valse Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Beethoven’s death, beloved pianist Alexander Korsantia returns to the NBSO to perform Beethoven’s Fourth—perhaps the most perfect piano concerto in the repertoire. Beethoven was a fervent advocate for the ideals of the French Revolution, and in that spirit, the second half of this concert is all French. And while Beethoven’s piece is the epitome of 19th-century Viennese music, Ravel’s La valse represents its unravelling, a magnificent farewell letter to the Viennese Waltz and to a world that would never be the same after the First World War. Connesson’s brilliant depiction of Beethoven the man will make the orchestra sound like you’ve never heard it before.

Bill Holcombe) (1935/1990) Francis Poulenc: Sextet (1932) Vanessa Holroyd, flute Laura Shamu, oboe Nicholas Brown, clarinet Michael Bellofatto, horn Rachel Juszczak, bassoon Janice Weber, piano Five members of the NBSO woodwind section present a scintillating program ranging from Mozart’s urbane Quintet for Piano and Winds to a ravishing reimagining of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Quintet and piano join forces for Poulenc’s jazzy Sextet, a jewel of Parisian wit, elegance, virtuosity, and – inevitably – melancholy. The perfect prelude to long-awaited spring!
