Stanley Jordan Trio headlines this year's 15th annual Arlington Jazz Festival

Mark your calendars for the 15th annual <a href="https://www.arlingtonjazz.org/">Arlington Jazz Festival</a>, running from April 8-12, with the grand finale concert, featuring the Stanley Jordan Trio. The Trio includes master guitarist <a href="https://stanleyjordan.com/">Stanley Jordan</a> accompanied by Wes Wirth (bass) and Kenwood Dennard (drums). This concert will be held in the Regent Theatre in Arlington. [Other Arlington Jazz Festival events will be held in various places around the town.] In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works-solo or with a group, Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Jordan is the master of a special technique on the guitar's fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players use similar techniques, Jordan's fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity has raised the bar for excellence. Arlington Jazz Festival, 15th Annual, runs April 8 thru 12, 2026. Entire schedule now finalized, featuring events, most free, that highlight a wide variety of musical styles, w/the Stanley Jordan Trio capping it off on the final day. The <a href="https://www.arlingtonjazz.org/">Arlington Jazz Festival</a> has been held annually since 2012, usually in April, a timeframe that has become known internationally as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). Festival originator/organizer/producer and Arlington-resident <a href="https://www.danfox.com/">Dan Fox </a>initially dubbed his vision as the A-Town Jazz Festival, when it was more of a relatively small but ambitious experiment. Fox's first efforts proved to be mighty enough that he has continued programming the Festival on a yearly basis. Even without missing a beat in 2020, when it needed to go virtual. Now the annual Festival has blossomed to the point that the tickets to this year's festival headliner master jazz guitarist <a href="https://stanleyjordan.com/en/">Stanley Jordan</a> and his Trio have been moving very quickly. Evidence that the Arlington Jazz Festival's grapevine has become very robust. The Festival, supported in part by a grant from the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture (ACAC), also receives organizing and production assistance from Arlington-based <a href="https://www.morningsidemusic.org/">Morningside Music Studio</a>, which is also under the direction of Dan Fox. He has this solid mission: to raise awareness and appreciation of jazz through the confluence of top performers, local rising ensembles, and student groups. He is also dedicated to fostering a sense of community and an appreciation that Arlington and surrounding towns outside of Boston-proper can also be cultural destinations. Revolutionary Snake Ensemble brings its much needed annual Mardi Gras Party back to Scullers

The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble's annual upbeat Mardi Gras Party joined by New Orleans native Henri Smith and other special you're-in-for-a-surprise guests. "Speaker Series": 2nd of 3-part series: "Lafayette in America in 1777-1781 and 1824-1825."

“Lafayette in America in 1777-1781 &amp; 1824-1825”; part 2 of a 3-part “Speaker Series” presentation, given by Alan Hoffman; hosted by the Bunker Hill Monument Association and the Friends of the Charlestown Branch of the Boston Public Library. In “Lafayette in America in 1777-1781 and 1824-1825″<a href="https://youtu.be/iNL7-152S48?si=dyAEms92aPQ950b4">,</a>&nbsp;author and translator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lafayetteinamerica.com/author/">Alan Hoffman</a>&nbsp;tells the story of&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_du_Motier,_Marquis_de_Lafayette#:~:text=During%20France's%20July%20Revolution%20of,under%20soil%20from%20Bunker%20Hill.">Lafayette</a>’s critical role in the American Revolution – both diplomatic and military. This includes both his successful lobbying of the French Court to provide an Expeditionary Force in 1780 and his Virginia Campaign and the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. Hoffman concludes with Lafayette’s remarkable Farewell Tour of the United States in 1824-1825. During this trip, General Lafayette visited all 24 states and was celebrated by over 3,000,000 Americans, more than 25% of the entire population. One contemporary – Edward Everett, who resided in Charlestown for a time – called the Farewell Tour “an event, taken in all its parts, unparalleled in the history of man.”

"Cyrus Dallin, His Time in Charlestown, and 57 Year Quest to Raise Boston's Paul Revere Monument"

Artist&nbsp;Cyrus Dallin&nbsp;(1861-1944), originally from Utah Territory, moved to Boston in 1880 to study sculpture. He was just a 22-year-old fledgling sculptor, when he shocked the Boston art scene by winning a national competition to create a monument in honor of Paul Revere, to then be installed in the North End.&nbsp;Dallin lived in Charlestown when he began his work on creating this monument. Join&nbsp;Nancy Blanton, Director of Outreach and Engagement at the&nbsp;Cyrus Dallin Art Museum&nbsp;in Arlington (MA) to hear the riveting story behind the creation of this beloved Boston landmark. Learn about the supportive role the Hall family of Charlestown played in Dallin's efforts to secure the commission and see it through. Neither Dallin nor the Halls could have predicted that the project would involve the creation of seven different models over five decades. Dallin's vision was finally realized in 1940, when the Paul Revere Monument was dedicated in Boston's North End Prado where it still stands today. The talk will be followed by a Q&amp;A, since many of Cyrus Dallin's 260 plus works are located here in Massachusetts, including public sculptures and pieces in the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum. Some of the local pieces, one in particular, have come under a national and international discussion regarding public monuments and cultural appropriation.

Revolutionary Snake Ensemble was formed in 1990, when Cambridge-based saxophonist Ken Field assembled an improvisational horn and percussion group with trumpeter and cartoonist Scott Getchell. The impetus was to entertain at a pagan women's ritual celebration. Since then, RSE has evolved and carried on in a myriad of ways. But one of the many constants over time is their devotion to maintaining their funk/street beat improvisational brass band style, performing a unique blend of original and traditional music that's heavily influenced by a strong New Orleans vibe. With a particular penchant for always celebrating this particular time of year, that begs for those winter blues to get a swift good times roll kick in the butt. A show at this point may seem like entertainment on the Titanic, but it's something RSE absolutely has to do to maintain the collective sanity of all. So RSE hopes one and all will join them to celebrate Mardi Gras 2025 at Scullers Jazz Club on March 1st, which is right around the bend. And welcome into every inch of your mind and body, that bon temp rouler vibe of New Orleans during this Year of the Snake. This “Third Thursdays” concert will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Trio Ex Nihilo’s debut recording and will be the first performance combining both groups, with the addition of "Third Thursdays" series host&nbsp;<a href="https://dbryantmusic.com/">Dave Bryant&nbsp;</a>on keyboards. The creativity and originality of these veteran free jazz musicians will be in full force during January’s installment in the long-running monthly “Third Thursdays” harmolodic jazz series. <a href="https://dbryantmusic.com/third-thursdays/">"Third Thursdays"</a> monthly jazz series host <a href="https://dbryantmusic.com/">Dave Bryant </a>(keyboardist) has announced that trumpeter <a href="https://www.facebook.com/russ.johnson1">Russ Johnson</a> (Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell) and alto saxophonist <a href="https://ericperson.com/">Eric Person</a> (Ronald Shannon Jackson, Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner), along with <a href="https://hilliardgreene.com/">Hill Greene</a> (bass) and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/james.k.jones.735/">James Kamal Jones</a> (drums) will join him for an evening of new pieces created for an upcoming recording by the quintet. This will be the debut performance together of these remarkable and accomplished musicians. Dave notes that: "As we continue to expand our reach to more musicians outside the Boston area, I'm excited to reconnect with two very distinguished colleagues, Russ Johnson and Eric Person, for their first performance together, along with 'Third Thursdays' favorites Hill Greene and James Kamal Jones." Admission at the door: $10 (cash / check / charge / venmo). Complimentary “Third Thursdays” concert parking is available at the Everett Street Garage at 10 Everett Street in Cambridge. Monthly "Third Thursdays" performances have all been video recorded, with the goal of documenting Ornette Coleman's impact on the free jazz movement. Another key purpose of the series is to document the experiences, reminiscences, and musical contributions of members of Coleman's bands. Dave notes: “I am privileged to learn from these brilliant improvising musicians from the Indian tradition and have my own creative methods enriched in the process. Mike Rivard (no stranger to compelling crosscultural encounters) will add another layer of interest with his work on the sintir. "Charles Coe's Cricket Symphony": a reading by poet Charles Coe, acc. by Ken Field's quartet

“Charles Coe’s Cricket Symphony”&nbsp;is a new live performance, featuring a collection of poems &amp; music based on the poetry of award-winning African American writer &amp; musician&nbsp;<a href="https://www.charlescoe.org/">Charles Coe</a>, with music&nbsp;including original compositions by&nbsp;<a href="https://kenfield.org/">Ken Field</a>. Coe will read selected works, with musical preludes, accompaniments, and interludes performed by an ensemble of prominent&nbsp;Massachusetts-based musicians led by Field (on sax and flute), joined by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wickedlocal.com/story/register/2015/01/30/tad-price-good-man-to/35323191007/">Tad Price</a>&nbsp;(guitar),&nbsp;<a href="https://blakenewman.org/">Blake Newman</a>&nbsp;(bass), and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jpmc.us/philneighbors">Phil Neighbors</a>&nbsp;(drums). Doors open at 7:00 pm. Advance tickets are $20, $25 at door. With a wide ranging song list inspired by the text of the poems, the music will traverse jazz, gospel, pop, Americana, funk, and improvisation, strung together in a seamless sequence outlining in words and tones the breadth of the American musical experience. Performances of the original “Symphony of Crickets” over the past two summers on Cape Cod received enthusiastic critical &amp; public response:&nbsp;This project has only been presented, up until now, on outer Cape Cod, and many have requested a Boston-area performance. Coe is a local treasure, and well known in the literary world and beyond.&nbsp;After two successful seasons on Cape Cod, the current “Charles Coe’s Cricket Symphony”&nbsp;will&nbsp;feature all new poetry and music. “Armed with these sturdy, compassionate, and accessible poems, Charles Coe delivers his forthright lessons in empathy and warmth with ethical fidelity. His mnemonic inner-city parables are not to be missed.
