Galanin reclaims narrative and creative agency, while demonstrating contemporary Indigenous art as a continually evolving practice. Speaking through multiple visual, sonic, and tactile languages, his concepts determine his processes, which include sculpture, installation, photography, video, performance, and textile-based work. This contemporary practice builds upon an Indigenous artistic continuum while celebrating the culture and its people; Galanin contributes urgent criticality and vision through resonant and multifaceted works. Nicholas Galanin (b. 1979, Sheet’ka (Sitka), Alaska) lives and works with his partner Merritt Johnson and their children in Sheet’ka (Sitka), Alaska. Twilight at MAAM: Community Celebration!

Celebrate the strength of Greater Boston’s arts community with Boston Public Art Triennial, Wagner Foundation, and MassArt Art Museum (MAAM). Come toast more—increased arts access, greater recognition of mid-career artists, and stronger connections across our creative communities. All are invited to experience GENERATIONS, showcasing the work of inaugural Wagner Art Fellows L'Merchie Frazier, Daniela Rivera, and Wen-ti Tsen in MAAM’s Bakalar Gallery. In the Paine Gallery, MAAM premieres Nicholas Galanin’s commission Aáni yéi xat duwasáakw (I am called Land). And, nearby in Evans Way Park, don’t miss Galanin’s public artwork, I think it goes like this (pick yourself up), commissioned as part of Triennial 2025, Boston’s first citywide public art exhibition. Join us for this festive occasion, with complimentary beverages and small bites throughout the evening. This is an official Triennial 2025 event. Ticketing Notice This event is free with advance registration.
