Celebrate the magic of fall with music, storytelling, and nature. As you wander the sanctuary’s scenic trails, discover live, trailside performances by beloved local musicians, poets, and storytellers. At each stop, let soulful melodies, captivating tales, and powerful poetry deepen your connection to the season and the landscape. Kids (and kids at heart) will love our Nature Play Area and a stop at the ice cream cart to purchase a well-earned treat. Each hour features a new mix of performers so drop in anytime between 1:00 and 4:00 pm or stay for the entire events!

The Living Screen: An Immersive Film and Music Experience

Experience nature through a different lens in this immersive film and music program at Long Pasture. The Living Screen - Nature Unheard brings together short nature films and live musical accompaniment performed by The Flushing Remonstrance, blending sound, image, and place into a shared sensory experience. The musical duo, Catherine Cramer (percussion, electronics) and Robert Kennedy (keyboards, electronics, voice), compose and perform their own scores to films. As the films unfold, participants are invited to slow down, notice details, and experience the natural world in a fresh and unexpected way. The experience is designed to spark curiosity, deepen appreciation for nature, and encourage meaningful connection through creative expression. The show will include short films by Stan Brakhage, Jean Painlevee, Guy Maddin, and others.

Evening of Campfire Songs and Stories

Gather around a glowing fire as the sun sinks over Wellfleet Bay and rousing songs and stories unfold. Award-winning performer Jackson Gillman—known as The Stand-Up Chameleon—takes audiences on a theatrical journey through the science and wonder of ocean life, weaving together song, storytelling, comedy, dance, and mime, into a one-of-a-kind experience for adults and teens. Whales, octopi, sharks, and more leap to life through Jackson's intimate, boundary-defying style of theatre. Sweet and savory s'mores and non-alcoholic beverages are included with registration, and guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine to enjoy alongside the show.

Birds Up Close with Author Lorna Gibson

The new book, 'Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders' by Lorna Gibson, brings an engineer's eye to the natural world. Drawing on her career as an engineering professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her lifelong passion for birding, Gibson reveals how birds function through the lens of structure, materials, and design. She investigates feathers, bones, bills, eggs, and flight—zooming in to the microscopic scale and stepping back to examine their larger structural systems. In this illustrated presentation, Lorna shares highlights from the book and answers fun and fascinating questions like: Why, and how, are duck feathers so water repellent? And how do phalaropes draw plankton-containing water droplets up their bills when they lack lips? Discover how engineering principles illuminate the hidden mechanics of birds. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Scan the landscape through spotting scopes set up around the grounds, then head inside for engaging educational presentations—including an up-close program featuring live owls that’s sure to be a hoot.
