As queer partners and artists, Phyllis Famiglietti and Debra Samdperil live, love, and share a studio together. They embrace that challenge in their art-making, working with their demons both separately and in tandem. We Are Not the Stories We Tell Ourselves: Intersecting Thoughts — Parallel Play explores the influence Famiglietti and Samdperil have on each other’s work as they integrate the judgments, convictions, and sentiments that stem from long-ago traumas. What almost destroyed them individually is now essential to what inspires them creatively. Famiglietti draws from the outside material world while Samdperil works from the inside out.

Phyllis Famiglietti and Debra Samdperil will speak about their current exhibition on view at Kingston Gallery,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/main-famiglietti-samdperil">We Are Not the Stories We Tell Ourselves:&nbsp;Intersecting Thoughts —Parallel Play</a>. They will touch on their processes and influences related to their individual art practices. Phyllis and Debra will also address how being queer partners who share their lives and a studio together can’t help but influence each other’s artmaking and how they work with that. An open discussion will follow including time for questions, thoughts, and some hot apple cider and cookies.

Resonant Currents&nbsp;by Iwalani Kaluhiokalani and Lani Asunción explores water as both a physical and symbolic force, blending sound, video, performance, and wearable art to illuminate unseen connections. Iwalani Kaluhiokalani and Lani Asunción recently collaborated together in<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C-fmdDJMMmS/?igsh=dGpwNzdsNmxzcW9l">&nbsp;‘Tabi Tabi Po’ (May I Pass)&nbsp;</a>a performance part of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rosekennedygreenway.org/art-exhibit/song-land-sea-asuncion/">SONG/ LAND/ SEA: WAI Water Warnings</a>, a public art installation by Asuncion on the Rose Kennedy Greenway on view through Summer 2025. Inspired by bathymetric charts, the flow of underwater ecosystems, and the human body’s fluid dynamics, the artists create an immersive experience that bridges self and environment. Through restorative soundscapes, video projections, and costuming as a living bridge, the performance celebrates water’s depth as a force of nature and metaphor, inviting audiences to engage with the unseen currents and histories that bind us in an age of climate change. Visualizing Climate Change II: Migration and Movements

Join us for an evening of thought-provoking discussion where art meets science. This Science Cafe will delve into the urgent issues of climate change, with a focus on how artists and scientists are collaboratively responding to environmental challenges. Topics will include the vulnerability of coastlines, the symbolism of sea currents, the migration of plants, and reimagining humanity’s relationship with the future of our coasts. Refreshments will be provided. Host: <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/amy-kaczur-2024">Amy Kaczur, Visual Artist</a> Kaczur’s latest body of work,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/amy-kaczur-2024">Messages from the Marsh, Parts 4–6</a>, on view in the Project Space at Kingston Gallery, explores the fragile ecosystems of East Coast marshes that are increasingly threatened by climate change. Her work combines environmental themes with artistic expression to provoke deeper reflection on the challenges of our changing world. Speakers: <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/margaret-hart">Iwalani Kaluhiokalani, Visual Artist</a> Kaluhiokalani will present her interdisciplinary project,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/iwalani-kaluhiokalani-mer-sea">Mer Sea</a>, which examines the sea as both a physical force and a metaphor for the internal currents that shape human experience.&nbsp;Mer Sea&nbsp;is on view in the Main Gallery at Kingston Gallery. <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/margaret-hart">Margaret Hart, Visual Artist</a> Hart is an artist at Kingston Gallery and faculty member at UMass Boston, will introduce a new project that examines critical environmental issues, including plant migration, thigmomorphogenesis (the way plants respond to touch), and the parallels between invasive species and human migration. <a href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/who-we-are/our-people/emma-gildesgame/">Emma Gildesgame, Climate Adaptation Scientist,&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/massachusetts/?gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA9bq6BhAKEiwAH6bqoPZAhxyLOYfBR4g_IiejKbAiDXuCcP3CzdE74pmMarWfc5xTgkbqMhoCBu8QAvD_BwE">The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts</a> Gildesgame will speak about reimagining our relationship with coastal landscapes and explore "managed retreat" as a strategy for adapting to rising sea levels and changing ecosystems.

Seaspeak: A Sonic Movement Performance

Join visual artist Iwalani Kaluhiokalani, musician Slamz, and projection artists Folahan Shodipo and Menefese Kudumu-Clavell for Seaspeak, an immersive exploration of underwater sound restoration through experimental music, video installation, and speculative sonic futures. This performance weaves together field recordings of marine environments—extinct and thriving—with innovative video design and vibrational soundscapes to reimagine lost, found, and imagined seascapes. Audiences are invited to listen deeply, not just with their ears but with their bodies, as the performance transforms the space into an oceanic realm, celebrating the vitality and fragility of marine ecosystems. Seaspeak offers a profound connection to the rhythms of the sea and our shared vibrational bond with its ecosystems. Seaspeak is presented in conjunction with <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/iwalani-kaluhiokalani-mer-sea">Iwalani Kaluhiokalani: Mer Sea </a>on view December 4–29, 2024 at Kingston Gallery.

Artist Talk: Rhonda Smith and Wendy Seller

Join&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/rhonda-smith-2024">Rhonda Smith</a>, Main Gallery artist, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/wendy-seller-2024">Wendy Seller</a>, Project Space artist, as they discuss their November exhibitions at Kingston Gallery. Mary Sherman from the&nbsp;<a href="https://transculturalexchange.org/">Transcultural Exchange</a>&nbsp;will also be in attendance to share information about the March 2025 conference. <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/rhonda-smith-2024">Undiscovered Country&nbsp;by Rhonda Smith</a>&nbsp;derives from various influences: sea tales, myths, poems, industrial and natural elements, medieval imagery, photographs, and contemporary statistics. These influences emerge during the creation of each piece. Rhonda Smith relies on the tactile process of shaping, molding, and assembling materials to give form to her ideas. Initial concepts often remain skeletal or merely impulsive, while the true essence of a piece develops through the tactile process of listening to what her hands transmute. <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/wendy-seller-2024">Hybridized Worlds&nbsp;by Wendy Seller&nbsp;</a>explores the fusion of traditional painting techniques and digital image-building. Wendy Seller embraces these polar-opposite artmaking approaches to create intangible hybridized worlds that integrate past and present, populated by magical figures and surreal landscapes. Seller developed this technique with Photoshop when an inherited “essential hand tremor” made it extremely difficult for her to write or paint any longer. Her digital collages evolve from a myriad of sources, including her own photography, Renaissance paintings, and current-day catalogs or magazines.

Spanning all three gallery spaces, this retrospective marks a watershed moment in Moses’ career by powerfully presenting both the shifts in her work and perhaps even more intriguing, the persistent qualities that have characterized her practice over the last two decades. Well known for her inventive use of color, Moses’ work is composed of disparate images, ideas, and processes that collide and coexist. Moses contrasts formal painting elements with expert craftsmanship. Whether the work is inspired by art history, contemporary politics, or the rock formations of New Mexico, Moses articulates her core concerns and insights.

Jessica and Jennifer will share their insights on the selection process, reveal unexpected challenges they encountered during installation, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at bringing this exhibition to life at Kingston Gallery. From Jessica Roscio: “Too Hot!&nbsp;is a discomfitingly relevant topic and the artworks submitted pointedly reflect the turbulence and anxiety of our times. The works in&nbsp;Too Hot!&nbsp;don’t give the viewer much space to breathe, and perhaps we need that feeling of urgency. Pieces in a range of media reference topics such as war, violence, identity politics, reproductive rights, climate change, and how the constant barrage of news about these hot button topics batters our collective psyches.”

Artist Talk: Erick Maldonado

Join Kingston Gallery Emerging Artist, Erick Maldonado for an Artist Talk about his current exhibition "Delights Momentum." Emerging Artist, <a href="https://www.erickmaldonadoart.com/">Erick Maldonado</a>, engages contemporary concerns and invites others to find their own narrative through images. In <a href="https://www.kingstongallery.com/center-maldanado-2024-1">Delights Momentum</a> , Erick combines his own exploration of identity with momentary responses to his environment and uses emblematic symbols to convey expressions of delights and joy. Large, animatic, and motionary charcoal drawings carry bold, textured lines that focus on a recollection of habits, objects, and space attached to one’s living experience. Works are inspired by what “reclamation” is, and the complexities of how that is offered through the hybridity of material. Erick is a Massachusetts based Dominican-American painter/visual artist, who primarily works with acrylic, oil, and mixed media using found materials, collage, and discarded materials to engage in his work. Erick explores themes of family, black gay/homosexual culture, interpersonal relationships, Dominican folklore and biodiversity. Through his paintings, Erick explores issues of race, class, and gender through figure, portraiture, and social media.
