Renaissance Tunes at the Taproom

Join us for an evening of tunes at Medford Brewing’s cozy taproom! We’ll play familiar Renaissance tunes and English country dances, and you’ll hear some of your favorite 17th-century drinking songs. Raise your glass and voice and sing along! The brewery offers many excellent beers as well as a limited but tasty array of snacks. A Health to the Company

17th-century London roars to life in this convivial program of tunes for the tavern including jovial drinking songs, love ballads both naughty and nice, and rustic catches for carousing with friends. We imagine an evening in good company at the tavern, by the fireplace, with a favorite beverage in hand. We share tales of pickpockets and punks, wise maids and goodfellows, the wonders of tobacco, the pitfalls of gambling, and the delights of good ale. Between toasts, we contemplate the meaning of life and reflect on unrequited love. Rounding out the evening’s merriment are works by Wilbye, Ravenscroft, and Sumarte, along with our original settings of lively country dances. A Musical Feast: Chamber Music of J.S. Bach

Les Bostonades presents a lavish all-Bach chamber program featuring the violin, viola, viola ga gamba, and harpsichord. In contrast to the large-scale works we performed last season, this program features tasteful arrangements of&nbsp;his trio sonatas&nbsp;as well as select solo sonatas for violin or viola da gamba with&nbsp;obbligato harpsichord. Join us in sampling these musical delicacies! Seven Times Salt's beloved annual concert (now in its 22nd year) celebrates the winter solstice and the return of the unconquered sun with music from the British Isles, Europe, and the New World. To see us through the longest night, we’ll perform a warming blend of familiar carols, festive wassailing songs, wintry consort tunes, Renaissance dances, upbeat Irish reels, and a helping of STS originals. Blistering Passions: Love Songs with Lute

Kim Leeds and Dani Zanuttini-Frank make their SoHIP debut with a compelling program of English and Italian music that explores imagery of burning love and icy rejection. Lute songs of the 17th century prominently feature these amorous themes, often through surprising allegories of pastoral idylls, militaristic conquests, and discordant bodily organs. Across its different allegorical incarnations, love pushes our 17th century poets to the physical breaking point: blazing heat and bitter cold express love's blistering sensation throughout this program. The duo performs works by Girolamo Frescobaldi, Barbara Strozzi, Francesca Caccini, Henry Purcell, William Lawes, and others.&nbsp; Kim Leeds, mezzo-soprano Dani Zanuttini-Frank, lute

Cantos y Suspiros (Songs and Sighs)

Xacarilla explores the sumptuous sound world of 17th-c. Spanish songs and dances. “Cantos y Suspiros” (Songs and Sighs) tells of the pleasures and treacheries of love as depicted in nature by the birds, wind, sea, and forest. This rich poetic landscape is illuminated by the music of master composers Juan Hidalgo, Juan de Návas, José Marín, Cristóbal Galán, Santiago de Murcia, Diego Fernández de Huete, and others. Selected songs from a collection held at the Hispanic Society of America in New York City round out the program. Sempervirens presents a brand new program spanning the Middle Ages to the present day. Four virtuoso recorder players join forces to perform music originally written for lute, organ, piano, voice, saxophone and even the Romantic Era symphony orchestra, all arranged to highlight the remarkable sound of the recorder consort. This highly varied repertoire includes vocal works by 15th-c. Franco-Flemish masters Busnois and Josquin, keyboard variations of Bach and Sweelinck, selections from Ligeti’s Bagatelles and Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and dances ranging from the Medieval estampie to the Romantic tango.
