Fireside Chat with Rim Battal and Liza Tripp

Join author Rim Battal and translator Liza Tripp as they discuss the English release of Battal's novel I'll Look Myself in the Eyes! In this autobiographical coming of age novel, 17-year-old Rim is caught smoking out her window in her home in Marrakesh, Morocco. This minor transgression unleashes the fury of her mother who flies into a rage and demands that Rim complete a gynecological test certifying her virginity. So begins a nuanced journey into the tangled web of a patriarchal society in which various generations of women seem to complicitly preserve the status quo. Ultimately, it is Rim who breaks the cycle of dysfunction, rebels against tradition, confronts betrayal from the women closest to her, and dares to be her true self. Rim Battal is a poet, journalist, and artist. She is the author of multiple poetry collections in French, including L’eau du bain, Vingt poèmes et des poussières, Latex, and Pommes girl. Her novel, Je me regarderai dans les yeux (which Galiot Press will be publishing in English this November as I’ll Look Myself in the Eyes), won the 2025 prix de la littérature arabe des lycéens and was a finalist for the main Arab literature prize in France. Her newest novel, Le chaos infini qui nous sépare, will be published in January 2027. Battal splits her time between Paris and Rabat. Liza Tripp is a translator based in Centerport, NY and Rockport, MA. In addition to I’ll Look Myself in the Eyes, she has also translated Hélène Hérault’s One Way (Silent Clamor Press) and received a 2026 Villa Albertine translation grant for Rim Battal’s L’eau du bain. Liza has also translated numerous non-fiction books for publishers including Rizzoli, Assouline, and Schiffer Books. Her poetry translations have appeared in the Cordite Poetry Review and the International Poetry Review.

Join author Daisy Rockwell in conversation with professor and scholar Jared Green as they discuss her new novel ALICE SEES GHOSTS! Description of ALICE SEES GHOSTS: Alice Bloodshaw’s grandmother lies dying in their crumbling ancestral home. Family relationships are fraught, and worsened by the mercurial behavior of Alice’s mother. Then Alice, eccentric and attuned to the supernatural, is haunted by the specter of her grandfather. His cryptic message sends Alice and her Bengali psychiatrist fiancé, practical-minded Ronit, on a journey from New England to India and back again to unearth the long-buried truths that have choked and tormented the family. Bit by bit, Alice untangles the past to confront the legacy of aristocracy, secrecy, and colonialism in a quest to mend family ties and stop living as a ghost herself. Join author Libbie Grant as she chats with Internet and Identity Scholar Judith Donath about her new novel THE ENDED WORLD! Libbie Grant's THE ENDED WORLD: A young woman’s vision over a Quebec lake sends her on a search to understand her relationship to the divine. While she spends years as a cloistered nun, a young boy struggles with his Mormon upbringing and, discovering the internet, grows up to design an AI entity that stuns him by appearing sentient. Embarking on their own separate road trips, these characters unite to face the scope of their responsibilities, their understanding of what’s holy, and the very question of what it is to be a human being. Steeped in philosophy, theology, and computer science, THE ENDED WORLD is a novel for our times. Judith Donath is a writer, designer and artist whose work focuses on the co-evolution of technology and society.
