Master Class with Karen Slack, Soprano

Boston Conservatory at Berklee proudly welcomes back to campus American soprano Karen Slack for a vocal arts master class. Praised for her “sizeable voice that captured all of the vacillating emotions” (New York Times), Slack is “not only one of the nation’s most celebrated sopranos, but a leading voice in changing and making spaces in classical music” (Trilloquy). A recipient of the 2022 Sphinx Medal of Excellence and a 2025 MPower Artist Grant, Slack is a sought-after collaborator, curator, and artistic advisor known for her fiery charisma and groundbreaking approach to engagement.&nbsp; Her debut album,&nbsp;Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price&nbsp;(Azica Records), won the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.​ Highlights of Slack’s 2024-2025 season included the nationwide tour of her new commissioning project, African Queens, a recital of new art songs by Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Shawn Okpebholo, Dave Ragland, Carlos Simon, and Joel Thompson.&nbsp;

Artistry in Action: Piano Masters Series—Dinara Klinton Master Class

Dinara Klinton recently was appointed professor of piano at Indiana University and previously served on the faculty of the Royal Academy of Music and the Yehudi Menuhin School in London. A native of Ukraine, she leads an impressive international concert and recording career. Piano Masters Series is artistically directed by Michael Lewin and part of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s Artistry in Action Series.

Artistry in Action: Piano Masters Series—Dinara Klinton in Recital Event Dates

Since winning the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition at age 18, Ukrainian pianist Dinara Klinton has established herself as an exciting virtuoso with an international career. Her recordings include Liszt’s complete&nbsp;Transcendental Études&nbsp;and Prokofiev piano sonatas, and she has performed with the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, and St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Her Boston debut recital will consist of piano fantasies by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, and Scriabin. Piano Masters Series is artistically directed by Michael Lewin and part of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s Artistry in Action Series.

Hinge Quartet: BRIGHT

Hinge Quartet returns to Boston Conservatory at Berklee with their new program BRIGHT. Praised as a “distinctive and progressive” ensemble (Boston Musical Intelligencer) whose performances “help modern works leap off the page” (Spectrum Culture), the Hinge Quartet is made up of Conservatory faculty Philipp Stäudlin (saxophones), Dan VanHassel (electric guitar), and Matt Sharrock (percussion) with the ever-virtuosic Keith Kirchoff (piano). Lying somewhere between a chamber ensemble and an avant-garde rock band, Hinge Quartet combines cutting-edge contemporary classical and experimental music with seamless multimedia integration. For their 2025–2026 concert season, Hinge presents a series of concerts that each explore a single adjective. BRIGHT invites the audience to consider this word in a variety of contexts. After all, brightness can be both energizing and disorienting. When faced with darkness, a bit of light can help center our thoughts or guide us down unfamiliar paths.&nbsp; BRIGHT features music by Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh, Caroline Mallonee, and John Mayrose alongside Louis Andriessen’s modern warhorse “Hout” and Klaus Lang’s engulfing “bright darkness (night).”

Faculty String Quartet with Michael Lewin

Kicking off their 2025–2026 season, Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s Faculty String Quartet (Saul Bitran, violin; Paul Laraia, viola; Markus Placci, violin; and Rhonda Rider, cello) will be joined by acclaimed pianist and professor Michael Lewin to perform the ultra-romantic and crowd-pleasing Dohnanyi Piano Quintet No. 1, following Bohuslav Martinů’s String Quartet No. 2.

Guest Artist: Lamnth Presents Mischa Salkind-Pearl’s Album Release Party

The composition and contemporary music program presents Lamnth (Lilit Hartunian, violin, and Nicholas Tolle, cimbalom), performing a program of solo and duo works by faculty member and chair Mischa Salkind-Pearl, celebrating the release of a new album of his complete works with cimbalom. Founded in 2023 by Hartunian and Tolle, Lamnth is a violin and cimbalom duo dedicated to building a new repertoire for their unique pairing. Their thoughtful and hands-on approach to collaborating has yielded new works by composers, including Maya Bennardo, Darcy Copeland, Marti Epstein, Ash Graham, Sid Richardson, Golnaz Shariatzadeh, and Niloufar Shiri. Hartunian and Tolle, long established members of the Boston new music community, are frequent performers with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, A Far Cry, Emmanuel Music, and Sound Icon, among other groups. They also frequently perform together with the Ludovico Ensemble, founded by Tolle.

Join us as Berklee City Music presents its annual scholarship concert, showcasing performances by talented summer scholars from around the world. Enjoy an evening of music featuring top artist-scholars from the Berklee City Music Network, performing selections across jazz, rock, R&amp;B, gospel, and funk-fusion ensembles. This event is presented by Berklee Summer Programs. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
