Appraisal Day!

Loring Greenough House's Appraisal Day is back! On Sunday November 3rd, between 1pm and 4pm, bring over those antique treasures and art and have them appraised by professional appraiser Edward Stanley. Tickets are not required, you can pay for your appraisal in peron. But RSVP here to receive any updates and a reminder for this event. Donation is $10 per item or $25 for 3 items. Bring up to 3 items - or just come and watch our very own Roadshow with refreshments! There are sure to be some exciting discoveries! Proceeds to benefit the Preservation Fund of the House. About our Appraiser: Edward Stanley is an accredited professional appraiser with 20 years of experience assisting clients in the valuation of their collections, estates, charitable donations and sale planning. A generalist appraiser he can evaluate a wide variety of fine art, antiques, decorative art and modern design items. (Please note: Jewelry, stamps and coins cannot be evaluated.)

The once famous actresses are ageing alone together in their decaying, dimly lit Los Angeles mansion, with the sadistic and delusional former child star ‘Baby Jane’ playing psychological games on her now paraplegic sister. In Distemper She Died: The Real Victims of Boston’s 17th Cent.ury Witch Trials

Massachusetts Bay began executing people for witchcraft in Boston almost fifty years before the Salem Witch Trials, including in Dorchester, Cambridge and Charlestown. These executions are much lesser-known, totaling fewer than half the number that took place in Salem in one year alone, but the stories behind them deserve to be told. Join Alyssa Conary for an introduction to the women convicted and executed for witchcraft in seventeenth-century Boston. Learn their names and their stories, and how one case may have been a precursor to the tragic events of 1692. Alyssa G. A. Conary, MA, is a freelance historian and the Membership Director of <a href="https://creativecollectivema.com/">Creative Collective</a> in Salem, Massachusetts. She completed a master’s degree in history at Salem State University in 2020 after working in interpretation, administration, and development in Salem’s heritage industry for several years. Her specific areas of historical interest include witchcraft and magic, the early modern Atlantic World, and seventeenth-century architecture. Alyssa lives in southern New Hampshire with her husband Ryan, their children William and Isabelle, and their cats Jonah and Henry. Join us for an interdisciplinary artists dama and Faith Johnson sharing their works ‘I’ve Got To Tell You Something’ and ‘Terrestrial’. Nature Meditation, Screening, and Discussion at the Loring Greenough House About the works and artists: “I’ve Got to Tell You Something,” 20 minutes, by Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama) “I’ve Got to Tell You Something” by Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama) is a unique, 90-foot work of performance art/sculptural cloth engendered by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. It is a portrait of an action of resistance and an appeal to the intention of memory and stillness. Antunes is a Brazilian artist based in Los Angeles. Her transdisciplinary practice merges language and durational performance to create paintings, photography, sculpture, sound, film, and assemblage. She is an autodidact and works in collaboration with public libraries, nature, and shared spaces as points of departure, reflecting on the selective nature of memory, inherent language and anthropological references. Antunes has shown nationally and internationally and recently published her book&nbsp;Second Birth&nbsp;with HEXENTEXTE, a Los Angeles-based feminist project. She is also a librarian at the Philosophical Research Society, where she hosts a monthly study group on women Surrealists. It is meant to privilege the perspective of the Earth with the human presence blending gently into the landscape.&nbsp;Terrestrial&nbsp;highlights the complex magic that surrounds us and our interconnection - not only physically - but emotionally and spiritually to this biosphere.&nbsp; The accompanying&nbsp;Nature Meditation&nbsp;is a guided activity to connect with the consciousness of the natural world through observation, meditation, and reflection.&nbsp; Faith Johnson is an interdisciplinary artist working with communal and individual visioning, alternative forms of knowledge, intuition, extrasensory perception, and communication with the sentience of the natural world. She is interested in revealing the magic and beingness of Earth through deep listening to the subtle languages of nature. Johnson explores these concepts in her interactive installations and experiences, participatory processes, performative actions, and videos. Slavery at the Loring Greenough House

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the families living at the Loring Greenough House and farming estatein Jamaica Plain used the labor of enslaved and indentured people. Scant information has long been known about their presence; recent research has uncovered more details. Join us for a free talk and live-stream, held in collaboration with Hidden Jamaica Plain and the Jamaica Plain Historical Society, at the Loring Greenough House on Monday, June 10 at 7 p.m. to learn about the new findings and the ongoing study being conducted by volunteers. Following a very well-attended talk on this history last January at First Church Parish Hall in January, this event is part of a series of collaborations, which will include a permanent exhibition, as new research emerges. The Loring Greenough House, a volunteer-run organization, invites all to attend this talk and to work with the organization to delve deeper into its history. This event is FREE and space is limited so if you will be attending in person, be sure to register early.
