In The Formula for Better Health, Frieden—named “the most influential leader in American public health since C. Everett Koop” by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg—reveals how to defeat the world’s deadliest diseases. Drawing from decades leading New York City’s health department after 9/11, directing the CDC during the Ebola epidemic, and fighting tuberculosis and other lethal threats in India and around the world, Frieden combines compelling stories with insider knowledge to show you how to win the battle for health. Join us for "Celebrating Unteaching" where MIT Press authors where MIT Press authors of Racism Untaught, Lisa E. Mercer and Terresa Moses, will share their expertise in a hands-on workshop &amp; conversation moderated by MIT Associate Professor Catherine D'Ignazio. Attendees will learn more about the Racism Untaught framework and practice unteaching with the book's accompanying Toolkit. <a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262048583/racism-untaught/">Racism Untaught: Revealing and Unlearning Racialized Design</a> (MIT Press) emerged from the need to foster learning environments that examine racialized design. Anti-racist design interventions can be difficult. Well-intentioned conversations can fuel tensions, activate racialized trauma, and lead to misunderstandings. In Racism Untaught, Mercer and Moses, two veteran educators, provide a step-by-step guide to anti-racist interventions that benefits all participants. Through dozens of successful workshops across the country, Mercer and Moses provide a framework for unlearning racialized design practices while fostering equity, justice, and community building. About the presenters: Terresa Moses is creative director of Blackbird Revolt, director of design justice and associate professor of graphic design at the University of Minnesota, and owner of Black Garnet Books. She created Project Naptural, co-created Racism Untaught and Hatch &amp; Flock, and serves on the board of Black Liberation Lab. Lisa Elzey Mercer's (she/her/hers) interests include developing and executing design interventions focused on ethics and anti-oppressive design frameworks. She developed Operation Compass, co-created Racism Untaught and Hatch and Flock, and is focused on developing a situated sense of ethics in design as a Ph.D. Student in Design at the University of Edinburgh. Catherine D'Ignazio is an Associate Professor of Urban Science and Planning and Director of the <a href="https://dataplusfeminism.mit.edu/">Data + Feminism Lab</a> at MIT. A scholar, artist/designer and hacker mama who focuses on feminist technology, data literacy and civic engagement, D'Ignazio has published two bookes with MIT Press and has won multiple awards for her art and design work.

Join the MIT Museum for a conversation with Harvard University Professor Cass Sunstein and Knight Science Journalism Fellow Emily Foxhall on the social cost of carbon. If you're injuring someone, you should stop—and pay for the damage you've caused. Why does this simple proposition, generally accepted, not apply to climate change? In Climate Justice, a bracing challenge to status quo thinking on the ethics of climate change, renowned author and legal scholar Cass Sunstein clearly frames what's at stake and lays out the moral imperative: When it comes to climate change, everyone must be counted equally, regardless of when they live or where they live—which means that wealthy nations, which have disproportionately benefited from greenhouse gas emissions, are obliged to help future generations and people in poor nations that are particularly vulnerable. Book Talk: Greg Epstein's "Tech Agnostic 

Join Humanist Chaplain and author Greg M. Epstein in conversation with Thea Keith Lucas and Chris Gilliard to explore global technology worship and the case for skepticism and agnosticism as a way of life. Today's technology has overtaken religion as the chief influence on twenty-first century life and community. In <a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262049207/tech-agnostic/">Tech Agnostic</a>, Harvard and MIT's influential humanist chaplain Greg Epstein explores what it means to be a critical thinker with respect to this new faith. Encouraging readers to reassert their common humanity beyond the seductive sheen of "tech," this book argues for tech agnosticism — not worship — as a way of life. Without suggesting we return to a mythical pre-tech past, Epstein shows why we must maintain a freethinking critical perspective toward innovation until it proves itself worthy of our faith or not. Epstein asks probing questions that center humanity at the heart of engineering: Who profits from an uncritical faith in technology? How can we remedy technology's problems while retaining its benefits? Showing how unbelief has always served humanity, Epstein revisits the historical apostates, skeptics, mystics, Cassandras, heretics, and whistleblowers who embody the tech reformation we desperately need. He argues that we must learn how to collectively demand that technology serve our pursuit of human lives that are deeply worth living. In our tumultuous era of religious extremism and rampant capitalism, Tech Agnostic offers a new path forward, where we maintain enough critical distance to remember that all that glitters is not gold — nor is it God. He holds a BA in philosophy from Northwestern University, an MS in agricultural economics from Cornell, and a PhD in economics from Harvard. Join the MIT Press Bookstore and the Art, Culture, Technology Program at MIT to discuss Ekow Eshun’s In the Black Fantastic w/ Kelli Morgan About this event A richly illustrated exploration of Black culture at its most wildly imaginative and artistically ambitious, <a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262047258/in-the-black-fantastic/">In the Black Fantastic </a>assembles art and imagery from across the African diaspora. Embracing the mythic and the speculative, it recycles and reconfigures elements of fable, folklore, science fiction, spiritual traditions, ceremonial pageantry, and the legacies of Afrofuturism. In works that span photography, painting, sculpture, cinema, graphic arts, music and architecture, In the Black Fantastic shows how speculative fictions in Black art and culture are boldly reimagining perspectives on race, gender and identity. Ekow Eshun is a writer and curator based in London. Formerly Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, he is the author of Black Gold of the Sun and Africa State of Mind. Eshun will be in conversation with Kelli Morgan, Professor of the Practice and the inaugural Director of Curatorial Studies at Tufts University. A curator, educator, and social justice activist who specializes in American art and visual culture, her scholarly commitment to the investigation of anti-blackness within those fields has demonstrated how traditional art history and museum practice work specifically to uphold white supremacy. Christie Neptune, an interdisciplinary artist working across video, photography, sculpture, and performance arts, will introduce the program. A graduate student in the Arts, Culture, and Technology program at MIT, Neptune investigates how constructs of race, gender, and class limit the personal experiences of historically marginalized bodies of color.
