The Mandorla Collective Celebrates George Russell

Together with musical directors Rick McLaughlin and Jesse Taitt, we are thrilled to announce the launch of The Mandorla Collective. Each year, a select ensemble of top Boston-based musicians will celebrate the music of a figure central to Boston jazz history whose influence continues to reverberate.&nbsp; Launching this project is an exciting next step in Mandorla Music’s evolution. Since 2013, we’ve been shining a light on the extraordinarily rich and diverse jazz scene of today’s Boston. Working with Rick and Jesse to pay homage to those who’ve come before is a deep honor. Kim Perlak & Francisco Mela

The Eustis Estate and Mandorla Music invite you to a series of intimate Sunday afternoon concerts in the mansion. Your ticket includes admission to the museum and refreshments. The duo of Kim Perlak and Francisco Mela connects the sounds of modern classical guitar and avant-garde percussion. Their original works and spontaneous composition feature modern, impressionistic, lyrical guitar playing, and a full range of imaginative textures from the drumset. Through this new music, and an open spirit, the duo invites listeners to become a part of each performance in spirit through their active listening presence. The Perlak/Mela Duo was founded at Berklee College of Music in the summer of 2024, where Kim serves as Chair of Guitar, and Francisco serves as professor of Percussion. Jorrit Dijkstra's BLINK

Saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra’s new group BLINK is an avant-garde jazz/improv group that grew out of his Porch Trio, formed for Quincy Porch Fest in 2016. Porch Trio bassist Nate McBride and drummer Eric Rosenthal are joined by two electric guitarists, Boston jazz veteran Eric Hofbauer and young talent Gabe Boyarin. &nbsp; The group draws from various traditions in free jazz and improvised music, and the use of analog electronics and a vintage electric bass gives the band a grungy, experimental rock and noise edge. The band uses a microtonal tuning system between the instruments, which gives it a mesmerizing and dreamy sound, inspired by classic African High Life bands, Indonesian Gamelan and delta blues guitar players. Dijkstra’s compositions are full of collective melodic and multi-rhythmic layerings, and form a springboard for open improvisations. &nbsp; Born in the Netherlands in 1966, Jorrit moved to the United States in 2002. He works as a composer and is a Professor at Berklee College of Music and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory in Boston. His composition and playing draw from the jazz tradition in spirit and sound, but has crossed stylistic and cultural borders in order to express a strong, evolving personal vision. He spent his formative years in Amsterdam’s vibrant improvisation community playing jazz, free improvisation, and world music. Since moving to the United States in 2002, Dijkstra has deepened his affinity with the experimental forces of American music, while staying in touch with his Dutch musical roots. &nbsp; This concert is presented with generous support from the Quincy Arts Council. &nbsp; Q Arts Gallery is located a very short walk from Quincy Center station on the Red Line. Andrew Stern & John Lockwood at the Eustis Estate

The Eustis Estate and Mandorla Music invite you to a series of intimate Sunday afternoon concerts in the mansion. Our October 12th concert features a pair of top Boston instrumentalists, guitarist Andrew Stern and bassist John Lockwood. In any given week, Andrew Stern can be found playing in a very wide range of musical situations, lending his inventive guitar sound to jazz, Americana, rock, and beyond. His most recent release is Lonely Hunter, a solo guitar album featuring original compositions and interpretations of works by such diverse musical voices as Hank Williams, Neil Young, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. John Lockwood is one of Boston’s most in-demand bass players, best known for holding down the low end for local free jazz legends The Fringe for over 40 years. In addition to a busy schedule on the Boston scene, he’s toured with major jazz figures and performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, and MIT Symphony. Andrew and John have performed together in duo and trio formats over the past 10 years. Traversing Monk to Mingus, Beatles to Beach Boys, they enjoy a unique, in-the-moment rapport that inevitably leads to lively musical adventure. The After Times at the Dot Jazz Series

During COVID lockdown, childhood friends Josiah Reibstein (bass), Malcolm Campbell (piano) and Joe Musacchia (drums) frequently met to play music&nbsp;in each other's yards. What started as a loose session for stretching out on jazz standards turned into a workshop for original music. As The After Times, they released their debut recording <a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/4XusyOqvVBVFg4mpyDT5ZM?si=UCDlN7GnSJWkYZ5D95lrbA">'The Feather Room'</a> earlier this year. Clear Audience outdoors at the Eustis Estate

Join us for summer concerts on the expansive lawn of Historic New England's Eustis Estate! Bring a picnic and enjoy music as the sun sets. Clear Audience is made up of four ubiquitous players on the Boston jazz scene: Steve Fell (guitar), Andy Voelker (saxophones), Jef Charland (bass) &amp; Luther Gray (drums). Individually, all four perform in a variety of contexts in Boston and beyond. Happily for us, they've been exploring the unique musical synergy they find together for many years. They play original music by all four members. Their four self-released albums (most recently 2021's 'Front Row Seat') demonstrate a "beautiful sound and full-on adventure" (Jon Garelick, Boston Globe) that's even better live. The 2025-2026 Dot Jazz Series kicks off on Saturday September 6th with a concert by the Sam Spear Quintet: Sam Spear - alto sax Andy Voelker - tenor sax Brian Friedland - keys Mark Poniatowski - bass Gen Yoshimura - drums The Sam Spear Quintet delivers hard-hitting bop, soulful swing, and blistering ballads. Composed of two saxes, piano, bass, and drums, SSQ performs an eclectic mix of original tunes and cleverly crafted arrangements of jazz standards. David Chesnut Jazz Festival

Historic New England and Mandorla Music present the third annual David Chesnut Jazz Festival at the Eustis Estate. The outdoor festival features a range of jazz styles performed by an eclectic group of musicians from Greater Boston and beyond: Caio e Jess, the Ana Petrova Organ Trio, Taylor Ho Bynum’s Nextette, and the Gregory Groover Quartet. $30 General Admission; Historic New England Members $20; EBT/SNAP/WIC cardholders $10 (Card to Culture); children free. For Card to Culture tickets, EBT/SNAP/WIC card must be presented at check in. Doors open at 2pm. Music 3-7pm. Set times to be announced. Bring your own chairs and blankets for lawn seating. He had a lifelong passion for music as both a performer and connoisseur, and he was active in the community. The David Chesnut Jazz Festival is helping tell a more inclusive story about the people who were part of the Eustis Estate, while celebrating the power of art and community. Albino Mbie

Guitarist, singer, composer and songwriter Albino Mbie, born in Mozambique, was drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians; he built his first guitar from a 5-liter oilcan, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords. After studying music education and performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, he moved to Boston in 2009, one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. Albino incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Afro-Pop and Moz-Jazz sound. Saxophone and flute player Jared Sims (credits include Duochrome, Hellbender, Dead Cat Bounce, Miracle Orchestra etc), is recently back in Boston after some years away, and we're glad to present one of his newer projects, this quartet featuring Rebecca Cline on piano, Fernando Huergo on bass and Gen Yoshimura on drums. Zahili Zamora & Claudio Ragazzi

Our May 2025 Dot Jazz concert will feature the Zahili Zamora and Claudio Ragazzi Duo. Cuban pianist Zahili Zamorá and an Argentinean guitarist Claudio Ragazzi blend vibrant Afro-Cuban rhythms with the soulful melodies of Argentinean tango and folk music. Expect original compositions, intricate improvisations, fiery solos, and heartfelt harmonies, taking the audience on a musical journey through Latin America. Zahili Gonzalez Zamora is a pianist, composer, bandleader, arranger, and educator. Born in Manzanillo, Cuba, she started playing piano at the age of six, and graduated from the National School of Music with a performance degree. She feels most defined by her Cuban heritage and her status as an immigrant. Her passion for music has taken her to Canada, to Southeast Asia and, now, to the United States. Her rich musical background, career experience and extraordinary improvisation skills render her a leader in the modern Latin jazz idiom and an influential, emulated musician. Guitarist Claudio Ragazzi is a Grammy winner and an Emmy-winning film composer who has performed with some of today's most respected musicians at renowned concert halls in the world. On May 10th he'll add Peabody Hall to an impressive list of venues he's performed in the past: Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, The Blue Note Jazz Club (NY and Tokyo), and Lincoln Center. Claudio has performed with a who's who of influential and respected musicians, including Gary Burton, Yo-Yo Ma, Regina Carter, Randy Brecker, Danilo Perez, Pablo Ziegler, Joe Lovano, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett and Paquito D'Rivera. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Rich Greenblatt Group

Boston based jazz vibraphonist Rich Greenblatt plays with "dazzling speed and a truly magical touch" (John Blenn, Good Times magazine). He draws inspiration from the swinging style of Milt Jackson and the four-mallet technique of Gary Burton. Rich has released five albums as a leader or co-leader, most recently 'Green Sky,' a collaboration with pianist and composer/arranger Mark Shilansky. He has played in jazz and blues festivals in the U.S. and Europe and recorded with The Be-Bop Guitars, The Jazz Composers' Alliance, Hide Tokunaga, The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, The Paramount Brass Quintet, and Inspector Tuppence. Over the years he has played with such great artists as Kurt Elling, Billy Mitchell, Kevin Hayes, Valery Ponamarev, Bill Charlap, Yoron Israel, Dennis Irwin, Winard Harper, Joe Hunt, Teddy Charles and Oscar Castro-Neves. For this Mandorla Music appearance at Theodore Parker Church, he'll be joined by Greg Hopkins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Rick Dimuzio on tenor sax, Keala Kaumeheiwa on bass and Steve Langone on drums. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Yulia Musayelyan Quartet

The April 2025 Dot Jazz concert will feature the Yulia Musayelyan Quartet. Yulia Musayelyan, flutes Maxim Lubarsky, piano Fernando Huergo, bass Gen Yoshimura, drums Flutist and composer Yulia Musayelyan was born in Moscow, Russia. A versatile performer and improviser across musical styles, she leads an original quartet and a tango-jazz project, and co-leads the Macayú Trio. Yulia collaborates regularly with the Fernando Huergo Quintet and Big Band, Greg Hopkins Big Band, Gaia Wilmer, Dario Acosta Teich, Vadim Neselovskyi, Louis Cole Big Band, and Knower. She also has extensive credits in the classical music world. Yulia has released 5 albums as leader, recorded flutes on over 35 albums as a sideperson, and toured the US, the UK, Europe, Central and South America with various musical projects. Strange Times, her fifth album as a leader, was released on Wherego Music in November 2024. The project is a musical chronicle of Musayelyan’s experience in and through the pandemic, a collection of original works and arrangements that explore uncertainty and hope. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 4:00 and music will begin at 5:00. Our March 23rd concert will feature Mike Rivard and Fabio Pirozzolo. Bassist Mike Rivard's career has found him performing in such diverse situations as legendary rock band Hypnosonics, the Boston Pops, singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke's band, global music powerhouse Grand Fatilla, and local jazz institution Either/Orchestra. Since the late 90s, his collective project Club d'Elf has blended jazz, Moroccan rhythms, psychedelia and more, earning an enthusiastic following and critical acclaim. Along the way he's become a serious student of the sintir, a 3-stringed Moroccan lute. This special duo performance will feature Mike on sintir and his Grand Fatilla and Club d'Elf bandmate Fabio Pirozzolo on percussion and vocals. Historic New England members $25; nonmembers $35.
