Reimagining Paul Revere: A Conversation with Narragansett Artist and Community Activist Sage Carbone

Enjoy this special conversation with Boston-based artist Sage Carbone who will discuss her Indigenous beadwork reimagining of Cyrus Dallin’s Paul Revere monument. The beadwork, which will be available for viewing during this program, was commissioned by the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum for display in the Euro-American Figures Gallery with the support of a grant from the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture. Carbone will share how her art relates to her efforts to elevate the histories and perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Greater Boston today through such work as the Indigenous Languages Visibility Project in Cambridge and annual Red Sox Native American Celebration.   Sage Carbone is a member of the Northern Narragansett Tribe and has Nipmuc and Mi'kmaq ancestry. This program is offered in conjunction with Freedom’s Way Hidden Treasures program and Arlington 250. Carbone views the semi quincentennial as an opportunity to envision what the next 250 years could look like when we engage with history in ways that uplift everyone.   This event is hosted and co-sponsored by the Arlington Historical Society. Additional co-sponsors include the Old Schwamb Mill and First Parish Unitarian Universalist Arlington Indigenous Justice Working Group.   This program is funded in part by grants from Freedoms Way National Heritage area and from the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Arlington Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration with the Red Hawk Singers & Dancers

Join the town wide celebration of this land’s First Peoples! This free event for all ages will feature a fun and educational performance by the Mashpee Wampanoag Red Hawk Singers and Dancers. Through song, dance, and teachings, the Red Hawk Singers and Dancers promote traditional Wampanoag values such as humility and respect to create true connections between diverse cultures and communities.   This event will take place at Arlington Town Hall, 730 Mass. Ave., Arlington, MA 02476. Sponsored by the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum, Old Schwamb Mill, Robbins Library, the Arlington Human Rights Commission, and First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Sculpture + Architecture Walking Tour: Cyrus Dallin & Arlington Center

Don't miss our last walking tour of the season! Explore the masterful public works created by the celebrated American sculptor, Cyrus Dallin, for his adopted hometown. Learn the stories behind notable memorials and historic buildings, including the Uncle Sam Memorial Statue (1976), Soldiers &amp; Sailors Monument (1887), and the art deco Arlington Co-operative Bank (1934). Art and history enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Before or after the tour, plan to visit one of the many wonderful restaurants in Arlington Center! The tour starts in front of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum at 611 Mass. Ave. in Arlington. Metered parking available in the lot behind the building.

Art in the Park

Join us for a relaxed and fun summer afternoon of artmaking in our beautiful new park! Artists of all ages and experience are welcome. Bring your favorite art supplies and create a new piece or fine tune a work in progress. Event organizer Chuck Luca will provide general instructions and extra supplies. While at the Museum, visit the closing reception of an exhibit in the Cutter Gallery (basement level of the building) featuring the work of Arlington artist <a href="https://www.hiltstudio.com/">Mary Hilt</a>. The show features a variety of media and styles. Many of Mary’s subjects are locally inspired. Free and open to all. Whittemore Park is located in front of the Dallin Museum at 611 Mass. Kids Sculpture Workshop at the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum

During this fun, hands-on program, kids will explore how young Cyrus Dallin taught himself to sculpt by observing the wildlife and people around him. Kids will participate in an age-appropriate tour of the Dallin Museum followed by a hand-building workshop where they will learn Dallin’s method for making armatures to create their own clay sculptures. A materials fee of $20 per child ($15 for members) is due in advance of the program. Space is limited! Early registration is recommended. Please register by Friday, February 23 at 5 pm. Washakie Unveiling

Be among the first to view the Museum’s recently acquired bronze of famous Shoshone leader, Chief Washakie. Celebrate the legacy of Chief Washakie and be among the first to view the Museum’s recently acquired Cyrus Dallin bronze of this famous Eastern Shoshone leader. This new statue replaces an inferior cast of Washakie previously owned by the Museum. This event will feature special recorded remarks by Shoshone leaders and gallery discussion on the history of the statue and the difference between the Museum’s two castings. Visitors will also be welcome to tour the galleries and enjoy refreshments in Whittemore Park. Free.

Poetry Night at the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum

In honor of National Poetry Month and Vittoria Dallin’s legacy as a poet, the Dallin Museum and Arlington’s Poet Laureate Jean Flanagan are thrilled to host a special event celebrating poets of Arlington’s past and present. Tours of the Museum will begin at 6 pm, followed by a reading by Arlington poet Teresa Cader at 7 pm in the Cutter Gallery (lower floor). Local poets will then have an opportunity to share their work during an open mic session. Refreshments will be served in the Cutter Gallery. All poets and poetry lovers are welcome!

Patriots Day Celebration

Hear ye, hear ye! Experience our two favorite Paul Revere-inspired poems – one authored by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the other by Cyrus Dallin – brought to life by Arlington locals! Get the inside story on the Battle of Menotomy and imagine what it was like on that tumultuous day in 1775. Learn about Dallin’s 57-year battle to complete his famous monument to Paul Revere in Boston. This free event will take place in Whittemore Park, in front of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum. Families are welcome! Bring chairs/blankets.

Indigenous Peoples Gallery Opening Celebration

Join us to celebrate the opening of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum’s new Indigenous Peoples Gallery! This powerful new exhibit explores Cyrus Dallin’s sculptures of Indigenous peoples in the context of his own time, intentions, and advocacy, while elevating the experiences of Indigenous peoples of the past and present. Interpretive themes examine America’s colonial legacy, the complex responses to Dallin’s imagery by viewers today, and Indigenous perspectives on history and healing. The Dallin Museum is grateful to our collaborators Elizabeth Solomon (Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag), Forrest Cuch (Ute Tribe), Claudia Tekina-ru Fox Tree (Arawak/Yurumein), and Faries Gray (Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag) for sharing their knowledge and insights with us on this project. Opening remarks will be held in Whittemore Park (in front of the Museum) at 1 pm. Guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments in the park from 1-3 pm. The Museum will be open for tours from 12-4 pm. The Indigenous Peoples Gallery project is supported by funds from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area Partnership Grant Program. Parking is available in the municipal lot behind the Museum. Meters are free on Sundays.
