A Pilgrimes Solace: Secret Worship Under The Tudors features various sacred and instrumental works by two composers of Renaissance England, William Byrd and John Dowland, who lived as Roman Catholics in a time when Catholics were persecuted in England under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, following Henry’s schism with the Pope during the protestant reformation. Roman Catholics in England at that time were subject to various forms of oppression, from fines for not attending Church of England religious services, to (as was the case for Dowland) being passed over for career advancement, to charges of treason. Due to these confinements, Catholics in the England of the 16th- and 17th-centuries were forced to find religious outlets in the form of secret masses held in private homes by Jesuit priests smuggled in from the continent, or, in the case of these composers, thinly veiled expressions of their oppression in their artistic works. For example, Byrd’s musical setting of a text like “arise o Lord, why sleepest thou?” from Psalm 44 takes on added meaning in the context of a composer working under an authoritarian regime using religion as a means to consolidate wealth and power. Praised for her “clear melodic core” and a “sound that rejoices in the beauty of natural vowels” (Boston Music Intelligencer), soprano&nbsp;Kendra Comstock&nbsp;is a Boston-based performer and teacher. Charles Iner&nbsp;is a Boston-based lutenist, guitarist, educator, and basso continuo performer. He received an MM in Historical Performance at Boston University, where he was awarded a departmental award for outstanding excellence in 2020, and a BA in Music Performance from Benedictine College.

Jeune Choeur e Choeur d’Enfants d’ile-de-France

Jeune Choeur e Choeur d’Enfants d’ile-de-France directed by Francis Bardot has toured the United States most every year since 1976. They make their return to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross where they last performed in 2019. The Jeune Chœur d’Ile de France (Ile-de-France Youth Choir), founded in 1999, is a natural extension of the Chœur d’Enfants d’Ile de France (Ile-de-France Children’s Choir). The young men and women in the choir, who range from 16 to 25 years of age, receive a high standard of training in vocal technique. They most often perform with their own soloists, some of which have successfully launched a professional career. Since its inception, the Jeune Chœur d’Ile de France has received well-deserved notice in rarely performed and complex works, such as Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, Duruflé’s Requiem and Guy Ropartz’s Mass in honor of Saint Anne. The choir’s annual tours have taken them to many countries, including the US, Canada, and Greece – also the destination of numerous music-themed trips over recent years. The choir’s home is the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel in Levallois. Its singers are among the 1,800 students in this conservatory headed by Francis Bardot.

BOSTON – Defying category and convention, famed Boston trumpeter Richard Kelley and Cathedral choirmaster, organist, and composer Richard J. Clark explore the depths of human frailty, struggle, and dignity in their second album "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made." The album coincides with the print publication from WLP | GIA Publications of the title track Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, a four-movement meditation on Psalm 139. The album also includes one of the final compositions of iconic New England composer Daniel Pinkham: "Scenes." Written for Richard Kelley and in the final months of his life, Pinkham explores the abyss, mourning, and transcendence. DEFYING ALL CONVENTION the album concludes with a BONUS TRACK featuring Richard Kelley on vocals in Clark’s category bending setting of poet E. Ethelbert Miller’s If My Blackness Turns to Fruit. Miller’s poem, featured on NPR’s Morning Edition in 2019, has been compared to Abel Meeropol’s "Strange Fruit" made famous by Billie Holiday. Clark’s setting of Miller’s evocative, yet hope-filled words is a classical art song in its bones but a traditional jazz ballad in its flesh. A New York native, he currently lives with his wife and four children just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

BOSTON — Maurice Clerc, Titular Organist Emeritus, Cathédrale de Dijon plays the Cathedral's historic E. &amp; G. G. Hook &amp; Hastings, Op. 801, 101-ranks | Sunday, October 23 | 3PM   Maurice Clerc is the Titular Organist Emeritus of the Cathédral in Dijon, France after serving as titular organist of this great instrument for forty-six years from 1972 until 2018. He was also a professor at the Conservatory of Dijon and lecturer at the University. He has performed some 1,300 concerts on four continents to great acclaim. Maurice Clerc recorded a dozen CDs including Bach and German baroque masters. However, having built up a reputation for romantic and modern repertoire, he is considered one of the specialists of the French music and has become attached to the promotion of the major works of Franck, Vierne, Dupré, Fleury, and Langlais. His most recent recordings include  Cochereau and French transcriptions.
