FPAC Harbor Harmonies Concert: The Storms Within

Praised for their “extraordinary fervor, commitment, and technical prowess”, the Kurganov-Finehouse Duo have performed at venues like Merkin Hall, Boston Conservatory, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Their recent album features the complete Brahms Violin Sonatas on historic instruments (Hänssler Classics), which was featured in The Strad Magazine (Feb. 2024). Daniel and Constantine have been collaborating since 2015, primarily out of their shared passion for legato, cats and donating money to Wall St. The Storms Within - Two master composers, each wrestling with inner turmoil and external upheaval. Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in C minor emerges from a profound personal crisis as he confronts deafness head-on. In striking contrast, Debussy’s Violin Sonata, composed amid illness and the shadows of World War I, offers an intimate portrait of vulnerability, and emotional intensity. Closing the program, Amy Beach’s Romance provides a lyrical and heartfelt moment of beauty from a pioneering American voice. TANGO ENCOUNTER: Alex Roitman Tango Ensemble

Join us on Thursday October 26th for a concert exploring various musical sub-genres within Tango, and the contribution of Jewish composers and musicians to it. Alex Roitman Tango Ensemble (ARTE) is a New England based group performing exciting authentic Argentine Tango music, for both dancers and listeners. Composed of Alex Roitman on bandoneon, Marcia Lehninger on violin, Jane Hua on piano and Leo Karmiy on double bass, the group combines strong classical skills with the extensive tango style training and individual musicality. This is primarily a concert (not all the pieces are danceable), but ample space will be provided for those who wish to dance. Similar to jazz, tango music has evolved a lot over the years. It started as simple dance music with folk roots. But then techniques and idioms that form the music language developed further and further, through the Golden Age of tango of late 30s and 40s, then the jazz influences of 50s and 60s, tango show styles of 70s and 80s and so on. From the grandeur of big orchestras to the intimacy of duos and trios to Piazzolla and other new tango composers to the present day, tango is a living and thriving genre of music. Bandleader Alex Roitman will introduce the music and speak about the Jewish composers and musicians who participatedin the evolution of the art form. Presented in partnership with Ballets Russes Arts Initiative. NOTA BENES: Doors Open at 7:00. Concert begins at 7:30. All seating except FRONT ROW is unassigned. The concert has an intermission and will end at approximately 9:15. Tickets cannot be refunded but can be transferred to a different attendee. We recommend buying tickets online whenever possible. Early Bird pricing of $25 ends on October 8th. General Admission is $30 after that. At the door, if spots are still available, payment will be cash or check only at $35.

Fanfare for Composing Women

As a woman in the Romantic era, virtuoso pianist and composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel had far less opportunity than her younger brother, Felix, and was even discouraged from having a public career in music. Though prolific (460 compositions by age 41) her output was smaller in scale by necessity. BRAI has commissioned San Francisco-based composer Patricia Wallinga to orchestrate Hensel's Piano Sonata in G Minor into a Concerto for piano and orchestra to give her the orchestral debut she deserved. Pianist Sharon Su will give the first performance of Wallinga’s arrangement with original cadenzas. The program also features music by women composers connected to the themes of history and our present-day relationship to it, including pieces by Joan Tower (1938-), Lera Auerbach (1973-) and Tania León (1943-). D﻿oors Open at 7 pm, music at 7:30 pm. Front Row ticket-holders are invited for a post-concert reception with the musicians, circa 9 pm.
