"And no one exists alone..." Join the Horizon Ensemble in our first concert of the new year! In Stronger Together, we show the power of music to build community. Join us on Sunday, February 8 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Covenant at 67 Newbury Street. First, we'll premiere colorful new works by our friends: Five Imagined Dances by Gaston Gosselin and Lustmord by Veronica Kao. Next, we'll hear Southern Harmony by American composer Ulysses Kay, inspired by American folk songs. Finally, we'll play the beloved Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, a celebration of musical mystery and friendship. We'll be testing a special bit of audience participation on this concert. "And as I was green and carefree..." The Horizon Ensemble has always been proud to present music by young local composers. In&nbsp;Visions of Youth, let's celebrate our young composer friends and historical composers in their early days! Join us on&nbsp;Sunday, November 9&nbsp;at&nbsp;3:00 PM&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Church of the Covenant on 67 Newbury Street&nbsp;in Back Bay for a wacky, vibrant show. We'll start with the passionate&nbsp;Ballade&nbsp;by British composer&nbsp;Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Then, Luciano Lopez Parnetti's Quansoo conjures a beach of Martha's Vineyard through Latin rhythms and minimalist textures. In&nbsp;h.a.g.s., countess báthory :),&nbsp;reinier potgieter&nbsp;commemorates a mythically bloodthirsty Hungarian countess through quiet, subtle gestures. We find our way through&nbsp;Stella G. Gitelman Willoughby's&nbsp;Clouds of Disbelief, free-flowing and floating. Finally, we'll play&nbsp;Modest Mussorgsky's wild&nbsp;Night on Bald Mountain, in its rare original version. Clouds of Disbelief will feature a special appearance by the&nbsp;Janelle Gilchrist Dance Troupe. After the concert, we'll invite our three composer friends for&nbsp;Our Visions of Youth, a group conversation about life as a composer in the modern era. Summer is here! It's the perfect season to listen to some lovely tunes outdoors. Join the Horizon Ensemble for our first outdoor performances, featuring our wind and brass musicians! There will be 2 performances: Saturday, July 26 at 1 PM at the Worcester St. Farm &amp; Flea Market, 725 Tremont St Sunday, July 27 at 2 PM on the sidewalk of Open Newbury Street, 67 Newbury St If it rains on Sunday, July 27, the concert will happen in the indoors of the Church of the Covenant on 67 Newbury Street. We'll begin with Gordon Jacob's bright-hearted Old Wine in New Bottles, featuring British folk tunes cast in a 20th-century fashion. Next is the second performance of the Serenade for Winds by four Horizon Ensemble composers, each of whom wrote one movement back in summer 2023. We'll finish with Antonín Dvořák's lyrical, dancing Serenade for Winds! We're excited to be collaborating with the Worcester St. Farm &amp; Flea Market and the Church of the Covenant, both of whom have kindly allowed us to perform in their outdoor spaces. Horizon Ensemble: Massachusetts Voices 

"Through all our history, to the last..." As springtime flourishes, let's celebrate our very own Bay State. The Horizon Ensemble celebrates the artistic, revolutionary voices of Massachusetts through orchestral music and poetry on Sunday, April 6 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Covenant. We'll begin with the winner of the Horizon Ensemble's inaugural Call for Scores: Coonarr, by Australian composer John Rotar, a breathlessly flowing portrait of natural beauty. Next, we'll premiere Paul Revere by our friend Ben Nacar, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American hero, as inspired by the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem. Turning to history, we'll perform Jephthah's Daughter by Massachusetts composer Amy Beach, a heartrending portrayal of the Biblical tale of sacrifice and faith. Finally, we present Leonard Bernstein's momentous Jeremiah Symphony, depicting the prophet Jeremiah's desperate pleas for reform amongst the destruction and despair brought upon humanity. Our concert will feature Boston-based soprano Hannah Shanefield as a performer in Jephthah's Daughter and the Jeremiah Symphony. We'll also feature poetry by local poets Chia Lam and Farah Masud. As we shiver under winter skies, let us find some warmth in the witty, heartfelt music of Francis Poulenc. Come join the Horizon Ensemble for some chamber and orchestral music inspired and written by this wonderfully rascally French composer, this Sunday, February 23 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Covenant. We'll start with some music by friends: Four Portraits in Brass by Yangfan Xu, inspired by Poulenc's lively personality, featuring the brass sextet The Ringers. Next will be Poulenc's elegantly clever Trio for Horn, Trumpet &amp; Trombone and his deathly, uncompromising Violin Sonata . We'll end as a full orchestra with his Sinfonietta, in which playful dance rhythms and sarcastic barbs surround a genuine, lyrical heart. “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…” The Horizon Ensemble presents a concert of chamber and orchestral music inspired by autumn. Join us on Saturday, November 16 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Covenant for some vibrant music amongst the falling leaves and enchanting winds. We begin with Jennifer Higdon’s Autumn Music for wind quintet, a soulfully flowing portrait of this season. Next is Three Moods in New England by our friend Hayley Qin, in which seven wind and brass instruments evoke nature-born memories of Vermont, Connecticut, and Forest Hills. Igor Stravinsky’s lively Dumbarton Oaks Concerto combines classical aesthetics with lively modern rhythmic action. Finally, the full Horizon Ensemble comes together for Joachim Raff's rarely-performed Symphony No. 10, “To Autumntime", featuring melancholy sighs and ghostly waltzes besides festive hunting calls. "The caged bird sings of freedom." The Horizon Ensemble celebrates the music of freedom as October's winds start to rush upon us. Join us on Sunday, October 6 at 3:00 PM at the Church of the Covenant in Back Bay for liberating, exciting orchestral tunes! We'll begin with the first surviving symphony by a woman: the Symphony in C Major by Marianna Martines, a Viennese composer and pianist who was friends with Mozart and Haydn. Next are two pieces by friends: Shaheed by Andrés Ballesteros, a string orchestra piece inspired by the Arab Spring; and Laleh-zar (Tulip Field) by Sepehr Pirasteh, drawing from the Iranian symbolism of tulips as representing love and sacrifice. We'll finish with Johannes Brahms, who wrote his Symphony No. 3 in F Major around his personal motto: "free but happy". This is a pay-what-you-can concert, with a suggested donation of $20. We'll also play Maurice Ravel's stately, songful Pavane for a Dead Princess; Gabriela Lena Frank's rhythmic, Peruvian-influenced Elegía Andina, and Florence Price's mysterious The Oak. "While thy branches mix with mine, And our roots together join." Shadows lengthen and reveal the beauty of the branches above us as we dance through these December days. The Horizon Ensemble is an orchestra that plays music by friends and music of history. Come join us on Sunday, December 17 at the Church of the Covenant for a wild concert to match this wild year! First, we'll perform the world premiere of act Natural~ by composer and violist Elsie Bae Han. This piece features cellist Olivia Katz and twenty-one string players — not only playing, but also walking around and talking. We'll find out what it really means to act natural! Next, we'll perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, a well-loved gem of the orchestral world. Each movement features its own characteristic rhythmic energy, from the stately, severe Allegretto to the boisterous, rollicking finale. What a blast!
