Set at Liberty: Stories of the Enslaved People in a New England Town

Remarkably, some of the stories of Beverly’s black population have been preserved and can be found at Historic Beverly in this exhibit. These are stories of citizens, black and white, battling against the unjust system of slavery; of enslaved men fighting for freedom for our nation, though not free themselves; of a woman using the law to emancipate her family; and of the racism that affected the lives of Beverly’s black population, long after they were freed from bondage. Revolutionary Currents: Tracing Beverly’s Bilbao Connections at a Turbulent Time

250 years ago this year, long-simmering tensions between London and New England burst into armed conflict right here in Massachusetts. The ensuing American Revolution was also a contest with important international dimensions, one of which will be explored in Historic Beverly’s new exhibit, Revolutionary Currents: Tracing Beverly’s Bilbao Connections at a Turbulent Time. Opening August 30 and running through December 20th in Historic Beverly’s c.1781 Cabot House headquarters, Revolutionary Currents will explore how the North Shore’s once-significant Spanish trading ties helped keep the area’s economy—and the military struggle for American independence—afloat. Beverly’s connection to where? Revolutionary Currents foregrounds Beverly’s long-forgotten connections to the Spanish Basque port of Bilbao, perhaps best-known today as the location of Frank Gehry’s celebrated Guggenheim Museum. Bilbao was 18th-century Europe’s leading importer of New England salt cod and a good friend to North Shore traders. A surreptitious source of military supplies even before April 19th, once war erupted, Bilbao offered North Shore privateers (commerce raiders) a friendly overseas operation base from which to prey on British shipping. Later, Bilbao also became a key conduit for the official Spanish Crown support that helped turn the tide of war in the rebelling colonies’ favor. Revolutionary Currents shows how Beverlyites, not least the Cabot House’s builder John and his brother Andrew, drew on their Bilbao ties to help sustain themselves—and the Revolutionary cause overall. Revolutionary Currents is part of a wider initiative seeking to reawaken public knowledge of the North Shore’s historically significant but now largely forgotten Iberian trading ties. You’ll discover fascinating stories of the past as you “virtually wander” through the headstones and learn about the lives of those who came before us. These gravestones convey highly personal messages that not only reveal a glimpse into their personal lives but also about the attitudes of colonial Beverly’s residents toward life, death, and eternity. Privateer Trail: A Historic Walking Tour

Do you love tales of pirates and maritime history? Then this is the tour for you!&nbsp; But what’s a privateer, you might ask?&nbsp; A privateer was a privately owned and armed ship, authorized by a government during wartime to attack and capture enemy merchant vessels and their cargo. Essentially, they were privately owned warships commissioned to disrupt enemy shipping. The key difference between privateers and pirates is that privateers operated under a government's commission, while pirates did not.&nbsp; That means privateers are basically licensed pirates! Join us on this historic walking tour to learn about Beverly’s most famous privateers and their exploits.&nbsp; Along the way, you’ll learn a lot of history, see some incredible historic homes and sites, and take in beautiful waterfront views.&nbsp; For tickets, please use the link in this event posting.&nbsp; Please note that the meeting location for the tour will be sent via email once you’ve registered.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” Outdoor Movie Night

“'The question isn't 'what are we going to do,' the question is 'what aren't we going to do?’” We’ll have it all . . . beer/wine, water, popcorn, and other items for you to watch “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” under the stars at Hale Farm! Best of all, admission is free! However, registration is required. For additional information and to register, please read below. Presented by the Cabot and Historic Beverly. Additional Information: 1. Doors open at 6:45 PM. Please do not arrive earlier. 2. There is limited parking available near the property. We recommend having dinner in the neighborhood, parking downtown, and taking a short walk to the location. 3. Seating will be general admission, first-come, first-served on the lawn. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs to sit on. There will be a blanket section in the front and a chair section in the back of the lawn. Please be advised, chairs are not permitted in the front section. 4. Beer/wine, water, popcorn, and other items will be available for purchase on site. Beer provided by Old Planters Brewing Co. IDs will be checked at the door, and wristbands will be issued to all those over 21 who wish to purchase alcohol. 5. An ADA accessible port-o-john will be available on site. 6. Picnic food and small coolers are allowed with the following restrictions: - No alcohol or glass can be brought into the venue. - Soft drinks, juice boxes, and bottled water are allowed, but they must be factory sealed. - Coolers, picnic baskets, and bags will be checked for glass, alcohol, and open containers. 6.
