The Roxbury Collaborative Presents: Roxbury Patriots Day! 

Come join us for the re-enactment, breakfast, historic talks, and even a historic trolley ride! ALL EVENTS ARE FREE! Patriots’ Day is the celebration of the first battle of the American Revolution. On April 18, 1775, three riders, Paul Revere from Boston, William Dawes from Roxbury, and Samuel Prescott from Concord, rode to warn American colonists that the British were marching from Boston and attempting to capture ammunition and cannons that were stored in Concord and Lexington to fight against the British Crown. Patriots’ Day has been a holiday in Massachusetts since 1894 but changed to the third Monday in April in the 1940s to coincide with the Boston Marathon. The Roxbury Collaborative has hosted the Roxbury portion of the ride with the re-enactment of the William Dawes ride since 1992. The Collaborative is a coalition of veterans, historic and community groups along with the First Church of Roxbury, the Dillaway-Thomas House and individuals who love history.

Roxbury Ramble: Public Art and Historical Places of note in Roxbury

Wear your walking shoes and plan to make it a day in The ‘Bury! This expanded tour will explore public art and places of note in the Sugar Hill and Fort Hill areas of Roxbury that border on JP and Dorchester.

Historic Meetinghouse Tour

A guided tour of the historic First Church in Roxbury, led by historian and preservation expert Thomas Plant. Explore the rich legacy and recent refurbishments of this landmark building at the heart of the UU Urban Ministry.

Makanda Project Concert

The Makanda Project is a 13-piece jazz ensemble formed to explore the previously unrecorded compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre.&nbsp;The group is based in Boston, Massachusetts, (Makanda’s hometown) and was started in 2005.&nbsp;Since then, the Makanda Project has been giving regular, self-produced free concerts in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood as well as performing outside of Boston – sharing what they believe is something unique and special about Makanda’s music, and adding their own individual and collective voices to his compositions.&nbsp;In addition, the group has added music by other composers to its repertoire and entered into a variety of collaborations with other musicians as well as artists from other disciplines.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

From Outlaws to Insiders 

This tour will focus on graffiti and murals featured on the walls in back and in the middle of the Madison Park and John D. O’Bryant High School campuses, which is usually only seen by their students

Public Art in Nubian Square

This tour will focus on public art along Washington Street in the Nubian Station area with featured stops at The General Gourdin and African American Veterans Memorial, The Bruce Bolling Building, Black Market, Madison Park High School
