Summer, 1923. The Baltic Sea. The writer Franz Kafka, seriously ill with tuberculosis, convalesces at a seaside resort in Müritz. By chance he meets the 25-year-old Dora Diamant on the beach, a governess from the Jewish Volksheim Berlin. Though they seem from different worlds, it is love at first sight, and for Kafka, Diamant embodies the essence of life. As their love grows, Kafka follows Diamant to Berlin. When his condition worsens, the lovers leave Berlin for a sanatorium near Vienna, where, in Diamant’s arms, Kafka succumbs to his illness barely a year after they meet. A group of clever East Germans take advantage of the chaotic times to retrieve as much money as they can carry – a highly entertaining heist based on true events. With wit and skill, they prove that even the most powerful system can be outsmarted. Things take a turn for the worse, however, when money starts circulating that officially never existed in the GDR (German Democratic Republic). Directed by Natja Brunckhorst and featuring the 2024 Academy Award-nominated Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, Toni Erdmann), this historical comedy is based on a true story. Marcelline Mandeng Nken: Rush Hour

Installation, Performance and Artist Talk Thursday, April 24 Opening of the Installation: 6 PM Performance: 7 PM Artist Talk: 8 PM Rush Hour is a performance installation that unfolds inside a moving train as a cinematic narrative structure. From themes of migration, displacement, and time travel, it links the concept of Sankofa, a call back into history to remember, with the theory of self-reference as fertile ground for sculptural forms, spatial interventions, and movement phrases. Through a surrealist lens, the work disrupts dichotomies between body and machine, nature and industry, and stellar motion and mechanical time. Staged in three acts, Rush Hour affirms language as a care tool that shapes self-determination beyond feminine sacrifice into storytelling and dreams. The choreography and suit of objects in the work point to the cyclical nature of history. As a vehicle, the train is a liminal space that reflects the motives of colonialism, journeying to paradise for discovery as a measure of conquest. As a 2025 Studio 170 resident at the Goethe-Institut Boston, Mandeng Nken will preview Vestibule or Act 2, in which the body animates a projection of images as a fleeting, playful exercise with light, and silhouette. She will also present Act 1, Conductor, where the train's operator becomes a storyteller who combines banal observations with cosmological mysteries. Set inside and around a miniature train set, the rhythm of this section follows the repetition of a ticking clock that breaks into a glitch. About the Artist:  Marcelline Mandeng Nken (b. Yaoundé, Cameroon) works with sculpture and time-based media. Her practice draws from concepts of syncretism, non-human intelligence, and the labor traditions of the Global South. In 2024, she earned an MFA from Yale School of Art and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Recently, she completed a Dance Research Fellowship at the New York Public Library's Jerome Robbins Dance Division. The fellowship culminated in a performance presentation titled "Queening The Knight: Baryshnikov's Vulnerability and Masculinity On Display," which is set to premiere at the Performing Arts Library in January 2025.

Film Screening: Uferfrauen - Lesbian Life and Love in the GDR

Six lesbians who created a private world for themselves despite state repression speak out about life behind the Wall in East Germany. Through intimate romances and lives as mothers and workers, these women, from both rural and metropolitan areas, found a way to exist. Uferfrauen conveys the omnipresent feeling of loneliness as an outsider, the social taboo of homosexuality, the compulsion to conform and adapt in a repressive state - a life on the (private) fringes of society, always in personal conflict, risking the jump into the deep end or staying on the safe shore. Despite their differences, the protagonists were all pursuing the same goal: the search for personal (love) happiness. Barbara Wallbraun&nbsp;is an East German, Leipzig-based filmmaker, media teacher and moderator of film events and workshops. She worked on her debut feature-length documentary „Uferfrauen - Lesbian life and love in the GDR” for seven years. It premiered in 2019 and travelled the world. New Films from Germany In cooperation with the Boston Turkish Film and Music Festival Aysun Bademsoy's long-term observation of Turkish female soccer players in Berlin-Kreuzberg focuses on the next generation 30 years after their first encounter. Born and raised in Germany, they still ask themselves the question: Do we really feel accepted here? It seems as if a cultural rift still defines their lives. Referring back to the 1990s, their mothers today reminisce about a youth in which the game of soccer provided the space for emancipation. The world of their daughters today lies beyond the soccer field: between Instagram, self-discovery and family responsibility. Aysun Bademsoy shows people who remain seekers. Her film not only develops a multi-layered portrait of the former soccer players but also raises questions about how life paths are shaped across generations. Presented in cooperation with Non-Event About the Artists: A legendary figure in underground music,&nbsp;Christian Hirsche&nbsp;has quietly produced a unique body of work beginning with the absurdist tape cut-ups of H.N.A.S. in the mid-1980s. In addition to the precise cinema pour l'oreille constructions of his solo work, he has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Merzbow, Organum, and Nurse With Wound, and has had longstanding partnerships in Mirror (with Andrew Chalk), In Camera (with Timo van Lujik) and Plastic Palace People (with Jim O'Rourke. This will be his first Boston performance in well over a decade. Lauren Sarah Hayes&nbsp;is a Scottish improviser, sound artist, and scholar who is recognised for her embodied approach to computer music. Her music is a mix of experimental pop/live electronics/techno/noise/free improvisation and has been described as ‘voracious’ and ‘exhilarating’. As a live sound sculptor, she manipulates, remixes, and bends voice, drum machines, analogue synths and self-built software. She has toured extensively across Europe and North America, including as part of her tenure with the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Her work has been released on Superpang, Hard Return, Pan Y Rosas Discos, LOL Editions, Werra Foxma, Sunwarped, and Harmonic Ooze Records. Matt Krefting&nbsp;is a writer and musician based in Holyoke, Massachusetts. His writing has appeared in The Wire, The Huffington Post, Bull Tongue Review, and elsewhere. A member of Son of Earth, The Believers, Idea Fire Company, and Sunburned Hand of the Man, he also creates his own solo music for cassettes. As a Ukrainian, I feel deeply connected to the current events in my country. However, this music is not only about the devastating war raging in my homeland. It speaks to all of us, reflecting on timeless human challenges and the best and worst aspects of our nature. Each of us has our own perseverantia and I hope this music offers a personal experience for everyone who listens.” PERSEVERANTIA is a suite in 11 movements:   Before 24 Twenty-Four March Passacaglia I Don't Need a Ride Orwell in Moscow For Refugees Dance of Ignorance Letter from Mariupol Prayer Perseverantia After 24   Vadim Neselovskyi — composer and pianist As a young composer and pianist growing up in Odesa, Ukraine and then Germany, Vadim Neselovskyi discovered that his calling was not to follow any one stylistic path but to become a “creator of music.” He has long since fulfilled this early promise in ways both inventive and unexpected: as a composer whose vision is expansive enough to spark inspired interpretations from a jazz trio and a symphony orchestra alike; as an improviser carving surprising pathways through the straight ahead, the avant-garde, and the indefinable; and as a collaborator valued by peers, mentors and fellow innovators. The Los Angeles Times has praised Neselovskyi’s “extraordinary playing” while The Guardian (UK) called him “the most promising of the young improvisers.” Whether as a pianist, composer, improviser, soloist or bandleader, Neselovskyi creates music that is truly inspired and wholly unique. His work has been played by jazz greats like Randy Brecker, Antonio Sanchez, Julian Lage, and Gary Burton, as well as classical artists (such as Daniel Gauthier, whose recording of Neselovskyi’s “San Felio” won an ECHO Classical Award) and symphony orchestras in the United States and Europe. Neselovskyi's diverse talents have attracted the attention of revered artists crossing the boundaries of genre, including legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton, who famously enlisted Neselovskyi for his acclaimed Generations Quintet; the prestigious Graz Philharmoniker, which performed his composition “Prelude for Vibes” on their New Year’s program; iconoclastic composer/saxophonist John Zorn, who invited Neselovskyi to contribute to The Book Beriah, the final installment of his Masada project; and French horn/alphorn pioneer Arkady Shilkloper, a profound influence with whom the pianist now shares a longstanding duo collaboration. In 2022, he paid tribute to his hometown with ODESA, a ruminative and poetic solo piano album featuring compositions inspired by Ukrainian landmarks like the Odesa Railway Station, Potemkin Stairs, and Odesa Conservatory. The New York Times classical critic Seth Colter Walls recently featured ODESA in “5 CLASSICAL ALBUMS YOU CAN LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW”. Additionally, the album has had recent media hits on NPR Morning Edition, WNYC's All of It with Alison Stewart, The PBS Newshour, The Boston Globe and many others all over Germany, Spain, France, the U.K., and elsewhere. The New York Times writes about the album: “Vadim Neselovskyi’s … pianism shares the qualities of a sculpture carved in ice: finely wrought detail, sharply traced; glinting elegance; coolness to the touch; refractions of light. His right and left hands converse with each other in eager, enchanted dialogue. “ His latest project PERSEVERANTIA for piano and string trio premiered in 2023 to standing ovations in the US, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Poland. The release of PERSEVERANTIA is scheduled for early 2025. Bengisu Gokce — violin Turkish born and raised Bengisu Gokce is a multi-genre violinist and singer, known for combining her Turkish roots with Eastern-European and Middle-Eastern traditions. As a professionally renowned performer, Gokce's versatile playing has led her to share the stage with several music icons, including Mark O’Connor, Tigran Hamasyan, Aynur Doğan, Shreya Ghoshal, Toninho Horta, Shankar Mahadevan, Simon Shaheen, Amal Murkus, and Pablo Ziegler. Throughout her career she has performed in various distinguished venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, American Repertory Theater, MFA Boston, Roulette Intermedium, Shapeshifter Lab, Ithra Theatre (Saudi Arabia) and Monte Carlo Salle Garnier (Monaco). She has also been featured in albums and recording projects with Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, sitar virtuoso Purbayan Chatterjee, drummer Antonio Sánchez (Pat Metheny Group), clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski (NY Gypsy All Stars), and many more. Gokce was one of the featured artists in the Berklee Indian Ensemble’s debut album Shuruaat, which was nominated for the Best Global Music Album at the 65th Annual Grammy ️Awards. Mina Kim — cello Hailed as “eloquent” by the Boston Globe, Korean-born cellist Mina Kim has been making music in the Boston area since 2010. As an active performer, Dr. Kim enjoys performing with the Rasa String Quartet and Trio Oko. As an educator, she teaches at Phillips Exeter Academy and College of the Holy Cross. Dr. Kim debuted at Carnegie Hall with ROSIN for a fundraiser for the New York Women’s Foundation in 2017. She has also been a featured soloist with USP Chamber Orchestra and the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. Her recent recording projects include A Far Cry, Awadagin Pratt, and Roomful of Teeth’s collaboration, Stillpoint. The album features Jesse Montgomery’s Rounds, which received a GRAMMY Award in 2024. Dr. Kim has attended various music festivals such as Tanglewood Music Center, Maine Chamber Music Seminar, and Lyricafest. A former member of the Hartford Symphony, Dr. Kim also enjoys being part of the cello sections of numerous orchestras around New England. Dr. Kim has met amazing mentors along her musical journey, including Yeesun Kim, Mike Block, and Terry King, who have helped her become the cellist and musician she is today. Her dream is to become one of the great mentors for emerging cellists and to help them find their musical voices just as her teachers did for her. In 2023, Dr. Kim received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at New England Conservatory with a minor in musicology. Sofia Nikas — viola An active orchestral and chamber musician, Sofia Nikas is a member of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the Cape Cod String Quartet. As a chamber musician, Sofia has worked with members of the Borromeo, Miró, Pacifica, and Juilliard string quartets. Notable performances include Mendelssohn’s String Quintet No. 2 with violist Roberto Diaz at Tanglewood Music Center, Webern’s Langsamer Satz at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, and Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp for Performance Today hosted by Fred Child. Sofia was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for four years, performing in Symphony Center and in public schools around Chicago. She has also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony, New World Symphony, and members of the San Antonio Symphony (now the San Antonio Philharmonic). For the past two summers, Sofia was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, serving as principal viola under the batons of Andris Nelsons and Stefan Asbury. She has also spent summers at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, and Aspen Music Festival in Aspen, Colorado. Sofia received her Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory studying with Marcus Thompson, and her Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with Atar Arad. She has additionally studied with Li-Kuo Chang of the Chicago Symphony and Peter Slowik of Oberlin Conservatory. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Sofia began playing viola in her public elementary school’s after-school string program. She continues to be an advocate for free and public music education.

NON-EVENT: JULES REIDY AND CRYS COLE

Experimental Music Concert | Double bill of experimental music and song with the Berlin-based artists Jules Reidy and crys cole Presented in cooperation with Non-Event About the Artists: Jules Reidy&nbsp;makes song cycles which abstractly deal with devotional love, transcendence, and death of the self. They use materials such as guitars, voice, percussion and found sounds, deconstructing and augmenting them through non-standard tuning systems, polyrhythmic structures, electronic processing and spatialisation. They aim to express and invoke states of uncanniness, dissociation, dys/euphoria, imagination, and void. They’ve released on Editions Mego, Black Truffle, Shelter Press and Longform Editions. Their next record comes out later this year. They are originally from Australia, and are currently based in Berlin. crys cole&nbsp;is a Canadian sound artist based in Berlin whose work includes composition, improvised performance and sound sculpture/installation. Working with subtle and imperfect sounds often generated through haptic gestures and seemingly mundane materials, she creates texturally nuanced works that continuously retune the ear. Cole has performed extensively worldwide in solo and collaborative contexts, working with an array of artists including Annea Lockwood, Tetuzi Akiyama, Francis Plagne, Leif Elggren as well as in ongoing duos with Oren Ambarchi, and with James Rushford as Ora Clementi. Her work has been published by Black Truffle, Penultimate Press, Ultra Eczema, Second Editions, Boomkat, Bocian, Another Timbre, Students of Decay, and Infrequency editions. She has exhibited in Canada, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK and Thailand.Her most recent solo album Making Conversation was released in the fall of 2024 on Black Truffle Records. In 1943, while the Allies are bombing Berlin and the Gestapo is purging the capital of Jews, a dangerous love affair blossoms between two women. One of them, Lilly Wust (Köhler), married and the mother of four sons, enjoys the privileges of her stature as an exemplar of Nazi motherhood. For her, this affair will be the most decisive experience of her life. For the other woman, Felice Schragenheim (Schrader), a Jewess and member of the underground, their love fuels her with the hope that she will survive. A half-century later, Lilly Wust told her incredible story to writer Erica Fischer, and the book, AIMÉE &amp; JAGUAR, first published in 1994, immediately became a bestseller and has since been translated into eleven languages.
