This month, Vessela Stoyanova plays jazz inspired by Balkan folk music, with her electric marimba, Valerie Thompson on cello, and Fabio Pirozzolo on percussion. GBH Music Holiday Spectacular 2024

Celebrate the season with the GBH Music Holiday Spectacular, a family-friendly concert and an opportunity for music lovers to be part of a live television production at GBH’s headquarters in Brighton. Hear holiday music from the Renaissance and beyond, including festive jazz favorites with a harp and violin duo from the Boston Pops; a mesmerizing blend of voice, baroque harp, and harpsichord, with soprano Amanda Forsythe and members of the Boston Early Music Festival Vocal and Chamber Ensembles; Fabiola Méndez, a captivating vocalist and Puerto Rican cuatro player; the Rich Greenblatt Group, a dynamic vibraphone jazz trio; Voices Boston, an inspirational children’s choir led by Dan Ryan; and the Boston University Trumpet Ensemble, injecting a little festive brass into the mix. GBH's Calderwood Studio will be decorated in the spirit of the season, as we salute the beginning of winter and revel in the harmony and warmth of this time of year with traditional carols and unique seasonal compositions. <a href="https://www.classicalwcrb.org/people/greg-ferrisi">Greg Ferrisi</a>, host of CRB Classical 99.5's afternoon drive, hosts this one-of-a-kind holiday experience. The GBH BPL studio will host Outspoken Saturdays, a spoken word poetry event for emerging artists. Every first Saturday of the month, the series will be created in collaboration with spoken word artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/amandasheaallday/?hl=en)">Amanda Shea</a>. Join us! An Afternoon with Jacques Pépin

You are invited to attend an exclusive event with legendary French chef, Jacques Pépin--author, television personality and educator. Jacques will be live in the GBH Studios. The wide-ranging conversation, led by James Beard award-winning chef and restauranteur Jody Adams, will touch upon Jacques’s career and culinary experiences cooking in some of the finest French restaurants in the world. Guests will learn more about their friendship with chef and GBH television personality Julia Child, and Jacques's involvement in a dozen PBS television programs and much more! The event will be moderated by Callie Crossley, host of Under the Radar with Callie Crossley, correspondent and co-host of The Culture Show and commentator on Morning Edition. Join GBH Music's quartet in residence, the Ulysses Quartet, for a performance at the Boston Public Library! Tickets are free, but registration is encouraged. About the Ulysses Quartet: The Ulysses Quartet has been praised for their “textural versatility,” “grave beauty” and “the kind of chemistry many quartets long for, but rarely achieve” (The Strad). Founded in 2015, the group won the grand prize and gold medal in the senior string division of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and first prize in the 2018 Schoenfeld International String Competition. The quartet’s members hail from Canada, the United States and Taiwan. They have performed in such prestigious halls as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Jordan Hall, the Picasso Museum in Málaga and Washington’s National Gallery of Art among many others. At Juilliard from 2019 to 2022, they were the Lisa Arnhold Fellows, serving as the School’s Graduate Resident String Quartet for 3 years. The group’s name pays homage to Homer’s hero Odysseus and his 10-year voyage home. The members of Ulysses perform on instruments and bows on loan from the Maestro Foundation and private donors. Limited seating is available on a first come, first serve basis. If you require a seat, we encourage you to arrive before the start time of this event. Getting Into Opera with Carol Vaness

GBH Music will introduce new listeners to opera in a video series produced in collaboration with Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) and New England Conservatory (NEC). Designed for newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts, “Getting into Opera” aims to ignite a passion for the genre by showcasing how powerful performances are shaped by vocal coaching and stage direction. The innovative multi-platform video series will be filmed in front of a live audience in GBH’s acoustically acclaimed Fraser Performance Studio. This event features renowned soprano Carol Vaness leading a masterclass for BLO Jane &amp; Steven Emerging Artists and New England Conservatory students. By pulling back the curtain on how great vocal performances are made, the masterclass will draw in new opera lovers while delighting fans of the genre. “Getting into Opera” will be hosted by Anthony Rudel, author of “Tales from the Opera,” “Classical Music Top 40,” and “Imagining Don Giovanni.” Joshua Major, Chair of Opera Studies at NEC and Bradley Vernatter, BLO’s Stanford Calderwood General Director &amp; CEO, will also share perspectives on producing operas as part of the series. “Getting into Opera” will be available free of charge on YouTube and other platforms.
