Beyond the Veil Reception

Gallery 263 is pleased to announce Beyond the Veil, a national group exhibition. This show is juried by curator, educator, and author Kate McNamara. In Beyond the Veil, the exhibiting artists harness dreams and imagination to contemplate realities that extend beyond the material world. Artists consider the boundaries between the present and somewhere else, abstracting elements of time and perception to cultivate new possibilities of the unknown. Body Politics Reception

Join us on Friday, March 21, 6–8 pm, for a free reception for Body Politics. Body Politics is a group exhibition of New England based artists who depict and engage with the human body within the context of the United States at this point in history. Alert with their own agency of identity, their work reflects care, pain, and defiance in a changing social landscape. Valentine Printmaking Workshop

Join New Impressions Print Studio artists Andrew Stearns and Stacy Friedman for a Printmaking Workshop on Friday, February 7. Hand print Valentine’s Day cards at the gallery. During the event you will learn best practices for hand printing linoleum blocks onto paper. Each ticket includes all materials needed, and you will be able to take home what you make.

Chinese New Year Fan Painting Workshop (4 pm)

Join Gallery 263 for a traditional Chinese New Year Fan Painting Workshop. Plum blossoms are a classic symbol of traditional Chinese culture. Blooming in the depths of winter, when all else withers, the plum blossom is a testament to the spirit of perseverance in the face of adversity. Renowned as one of the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese culture, the plum blossom has long been celebrated by scholars and poets as a symbol of purity and resilience, as well as unyielding independence. Our instructor, Skye, will guide you in experiencing traditional Chinese ink and wash painting by creating a plum blossom scene on a small fan. Sky has been immersed in and practicing traditional Chinese ink and wash painting and calligraphy for more than 10 years. She will explain how to capture the essence of plum blossoms and demonstrate the contrast between thick and light ink, along with the layering techniques that highlight the lingering charm of the flowers. Students will start on rice paper using a template before painting on their fans. Of course, you are encouraged to express your creativity. The small fans for this workshop are smaller than regular fans and can be used as bookmarks or bag charms, adding a splash of color to your daily life. You will stroll through a “plum blossom garden” and discover your unique fragrance of flowers.

The Art of Care Artist Talk and Family Event

Join Gallery 263 on Saturday, January 18, for a free artist talk and family event as part of the <a href="https://gallery263.org/exhibition/the-art-of-care/">Art of Care exhibition</a>. Learn more about the practices of writer, organizer, and artist Cameron Russell and photographer Mei Tao. Plus, join them for a story hour, an eye-spy gallery tour, and an invitation to put a photo from your own family archive up on the gallery wall! Bring pictures (printed, or digital and we can print on-site) of home-made halloween costumes, birthday cakes, hand-knit sweaters, quilts, hair styles, or any other way your family/teachers/babysitter/friends/etc. cared for you and / or each other through creative expression.* *Please note: we do not have the capacity to return photos after the show closes.
