Intro to Wood: Spoons & Stools Intensive!

Spend four days immersed in shaping wood by hand in this intensive exploration of carving and chair making. Students will first use subtractive techniques to carve a spoon from a solid block of wood and design stools using full-scale drawings before roughing lumber to size and cutting the joinery, which makes this additive project possible. Next, students will focus on shaping and sanding these rough parts before diving into assembly, painting, and finishing the projects. Isaac will guide students through the entire creation process, from selecting wood to finishing, while allowing ample opportunity for creativity in design. By the end of the class, students will have completed their two projects and will leave with knowledge of many of the fundamental hand tools used in woodworking. While this workshop will take advantage of the fully equipped shop at the Eliot School, there will also be a discussion about how to continue stool making at home with a relatively small kit of tools.

Marbling Madness Intensive

Immerse yourself in five days of Turkish marbling on paper, wood, and textiles! Cristina will teach traditional combed patterns and techniques that can produce lovely figurative designs of fish, flowers, birds, and abstract shapes. Floating designs may be free-form, combed, or even blown. Prints will be made on paper and fabrics in a linear fashion; dimensional objects will be rolled across the vats, and items can be dunked into deep vats. Each day will have a special focus with ample time to experiment, create your own style, and a truly unique portfolio of marbled work. Projects include paper lanterns, vintage linens, wooden bowls and plates, terracotta, silk scarves, and more.

Wood Turning Intensive: Boxes, Bowls, and Knobs

Come learn the ease and joy of woodturning—three forms, four days! Spend four days immersed in woodturning as you explore three essential forms—bowls, lidded boxes, and custom knobs. Guided by an experienced instructor who typically teaches these subjects separately, students will build strong lathe fundamentals while advancing their skills in shaping, hollowing, lid fitting, and repetition work. Making a bowl or two in the first two days will give you all the skill sets needed to make other shapes—such as plates, boxes, vases, candlesticks, and knobs—in the last two days. Finishes will be applied outside of class, but the instructor will cover finishing options and techniques during the workshop. This intensive format allows for deeper focus, continuity of practice, and meaningful skill development. Students will get lots of one-on-one instruction and leave with finished pieces, a stronger command of the lathe, and the confidence to continue exploring woodturning independently. Many students find woodturning a meditative experience, easier to do than they thought.

Gardens of Resonance Opening Reception

Join us for a joyous evening celebrating the opening of the <a href="https://eliotschool.org/articles/2026-air-exhibit">Gardens of Resonance</a> exhibition at Piano Craft Gallery. The evening will include music, interactive activities, and opportunities to talk to the artists about their work. Corey and the Teen Bridge Artists he worked with throughout the residency will showcase their work and hold a discussion around their artistic relationships with nature and how this experience has changed them. Gardens of Resonance explores how the environment shapes our identity, experiences, and artistic voice, as well shape it back in turn. Corey and the Teen Bridge Artists engaged with values of home, community, memory, and activism through a series of site-to-studio workshops. The Teen Bridge Artists led these workshops with our community partners: the Arnold Arboretum, The Food Project, and City Sprouts. At each site, they used unique tactile media including cyanotype, botanical printing, and shibori with natural dyes to create textiles, which they ultimately used to collaboratively create a large-scale “Resonance Tapestry,” which is the centerpiece of the exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public from Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23, on Friday from 6 to 8 PM, and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 PM.

Sew Many Mittens

Help the Eliot School kick off our 350th anniversary celebrations with Sew Many Mittens—a community service event where we will create 350 pairs of mittens out of recycled wool to provide warmth and comfort to those in need during the cold winter months. Our partners,&nbsp;Friends of Boston’s Homeless, will distribute everything we create to unhoused people across the Greater Boston area.&nbsp; &nbsp; To make this possible, we need volunteers of all ages and skill levels to help us make mittens—no sewing experience required! Volunteers will enjoy a DJ spinning great tunes, complemented by tasty snacks, warm beverages, and meaningful conversations. Join a three-hour shift or stay for the whole day. Our 9 AM-12 PM shift is already full, and our 12-3 PM shift is close behind, but we still need more sign-ups for our 3-6 PM and 6-9 PM shifts!&nbsp; Register yourself or your group to volunteer&nbsp;here: https://forms.gle/E8bqh5oFdV68Hacf8 Can’t make it, but still want to help out? Gelliprinting with Botanicals

This workshop will teach the basics of gelliprinting using botanicals (plants, weeds, and flowers). Join us to learn several different ways to make botanical prints. We will talk about the different kinds of paints that are used in printing,&nbsp;colors and color mixing, and the paint characteristics that allow for layering, an important concept for gelliprinting printing. At the end of the workshop, students will have learned basic information about gelliprinting including the concepts of main and ghost prints, the use of a brayer, characteristics of acrylic paint, and how to make botanical prints. We will also&nbsp;talk about the different kinds of paper that can be used for gelliprinting and&nbsp;discuss different ways that these prints can be used. Students will begin the workshop by gathering plants and weeds in the vicinity of the Eliot School. From there, Diane will&nbsp;demonstrate basic concepts, and talk about color and paper and layering. In the afternoon, we will make many gelliprints using the materials they gathered in the morning and the information learned in the first part of the workshop.

Intensive: Carving Wood with Small Tools

Through a series of demonstrations and discussions, you will be introduced to a variety of wood carving techniques and styles, all of which can be carved with a modest set of small wood carving tools. Each class will include a demonstration and&nbsp;an opportunity to begin carving and ask questions. We will share our work and the instructor will answer questions before moving on to the next demonstration/project. This four-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

Intensive: Turned Bowls & Decorating Techniques

Learn the basics of lathe turning a wooden bowl during this Summer Intensive. You'll learn how to turn a block of wood into a bowl as well as multiple techniques to decorate&nbsp;surfaces. Join us to learn how to dye, paint, texture and/or burn your bowl's surface to turn it&nbsp;into a decorated piece of art. This four-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

Intensive: Watercolor Landscapes

In this Summer Intensive, you'll review&nbsp;basic watercolor skills like color mixing, paint-water balance, and brush use. Then you'll learn how to effectively apply these techniques to create exciting landscape representations. We'll be painting different types of landscapes with an eye towards using techniques to represent features of the landscapes like&nbsp;rocks, trees, and water.&nbsp;Students will walk&nbsp;away with the skills to create their own landscape paintings beyond the class. This three-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

Intensive: Japanese Woodblock Printmaking

Japanese woodblock printmaking is defined by the way the blocks are carved and printed, the kind and preparation of the paper, the kind of ink and how it is applied, but, mostly, by the approach to the work. The many subtle layers of the process will provide a lifetime of challenges and opportunities. We will approach this introduction with equal parts levity and seriousness, and before long you will be on your way. New and continuing printmakers are encouraged to participate! This four-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

Intensive: Dovetailed Wall Cabinet

Everyone needs a place to store things, so why not level up your storage area and your woodworking skills by making a beautiful storage cabinet with traditional dovetail joinery? Dovetail joints have long been a sign of fine cabinetmaking; they look great, and they are incredibly strong. Learning to cut and fit dovetails teaches you&nbsp;so much about measuring and finessing fits. This class will immerse you in some of the most useful techniques in woodworking while using power tools and hand tools in the class.&nbsp; This four-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

Intensive: Felting and Dyeing Wool for Hats and Sculpture

This felting and dyeing class is open to all levels of felters&nbsp;including beginners. The class will feature three-dimensional felting for projects like hats, mittens, and sculptures. We will also work on dyeing wool since it really lends itself to accepting dye beautifully. Felting and dyeing wool are both labor-intensive techniques that require a bit of arm strength and patience. The felting process happens as the fluffy, wool fibers attach to each other and become a structured fabric by using water, soap, and agitation (arm strength). This technique has endless options for possible forms. Students will end up with a few samples of felted forms that they can also dye, plus one or two more elaborate projects like a hat and mittens or sculptures and installations. This four-day intensive will allow you to immerse yourself in a specific craft, but also bond with other artists and creative people over lunch and see the art they’ve been creating in their intensives.

"My Recipe, Our Potluck" Opening Reception

A celebration of the opening of the&nbsp;<a href="https://eliotschool.org/articles/air-2025-exhibit-piano-craft-gallery">My Recipe, Our Potluck</a>&nbsp;exhibition at Piano Craft Gallery.&nbsp;This joyous evening will include a potluck, music, and activities.&nbsp;The Eliot School of Fine &amp; Applied Arts’ 2025 Artist in Residence&nbsp;Yuko Okabe&nbsp;and the Teen Artists who participated in their residency will be there to showcase their work and hold a discussion around food, culture, and belonging. My Recipe, Our Potluck&nbsp;explores how our communities view cultural resilience and resistance through a lens of food and gathering. Using food as a storytelling vessel,&nbsp;Okabe and the Teen Artists collected stories from each other and from community members through interactive workshops and translated those stories and observations into illustrated works. The exhibition is open to the public from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, September 7, on Fridays from 6 to 8 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 5 PM.

Improv Quilting

Learn how to let go of measuring and patterns and build a quilted wall hanging using an improvisational method. Students will be led through scores (or prompts) to unleash their creativity. We will cover both machine and hand quilting, using the machine to piece together the face of our quilt and then transitioning to hand quilting the face to the backing. Students will walk away with a completed small wall hanging and the skills to continue improvisational quilting on their own.
