Revelation in Ecumenical Perspectives

As a part of the&nbsp;Reformation Commentary on Scripture&nbsp;series, Rodney L. Petersen, (PhD, Princeton) along with Gerald L. Bray (PhD, La Sorbonne) have co-edited and published the volume on the highly enigmatic and consequential Book of Revelation under Intervarsity Press. Sixteenth-century Reformers, much like interpreters today, show a diversity of opinion on how Revelation is to be understood, whether through more spiritual and Last Judgment connotations, or as a snapshot in historical context. Much like the vast social and political upheaval in the time of the Reformation, we have called upon&nbsp;Rodney and his colleagues to remark upon Revelation in ecumenical perspectives today.&nbsp;<a href="https://coopmet.org/">Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM)</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bostontheological.org/">Boston Theological Interreligious consortium (BTI)</a>, two of Rodney’s previous places of directorship, are helping to put this conversation together with friends—at the Boston University Marsh Chapel on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 3-5pm—for an afternoon of retrospection and future revelation. Dr. Matthew Ichihashi Potts, MDiv '08, PhD '13</a>, was appointed the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church and the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals in 2021. Matt has served on the faculty at Harvard Divinity School since 2013, and has focused his teaching on sacramental and moral theology, ministry and pastoral theology, religion and literature, and preaching. He is the author of two books,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/cormac-mccarthy-and-the-signs-of-sacrament-9781501306563/" target="_blank">Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament: Literature, Theology, and the Moral of Stories</a>&nbsp;(Bloomsbury, 2015) and&nbsp;<a href="https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300276824/forgiveness/" target="_blank">Forgiveness: An Alternative Account</a>&nbsp;(Yale University Press, 2022). He has also published scholarly essays in several leading journals and invited essay collections, and he sits on the editorial board of the journal&nbsp;Literature and Theology. He is also co-host of the podcast&nbsp;<a href="https://www.harrypottersacredtext.com/" target="_blank">Harry Potter and the Sacred Text</a>. Matt earned his BA from the University of Notre Dame, and both his MDiv and PhD degrees from Harvard. He served as both an officer in the United States Navy and as a college administrator before being ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. He has since ministered to several parishes in Massachusetts. Matt is originally from Michigan and now lives on the University campus in Sparks House with his wife Colette, their three children, and a whoodle named Suki. Respondents include: A bridge-builder,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wgbh.org/people/andrew-kimble" target="_blank">Rev. Andrew Kimble</a>&nbsp;cares about sustaining collaborative partnerships between educational institutions and the wider public. An ordained itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. Andrew serves as Executive Minister at Grant AME Church in Boston. At Boston University School of Theology (STH), Rev. Andrew co-leads philanthropic and alumni engagement initiatives, helping to raise financial support for the school and keep STH's 4,000 alumni connected. At STH, he also directs the online lifelong learning program and co-directs the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He's also an educational advisor for the Trauma-Responsive Congregations project at STH and a board member for Cambridge Forum. In his free time, Rev. Andrew enjoys listening to live jazz, running outdoors, visiting the used book section in local bookstores, and spending time with family and friends. Maxine Lyons&nbsp;is a former CMM board member and co-chair of the Ruah Interfaith Spirituality and the Arts program. She currently serves on CMM’s advisory council, and is an active member of Temple Beth Zion, Brookline. Maxine contributes to the interfaith service weekly with homeless individuals via Chaplains on the Way, and has been mentoring inmates through spiritual accompaniment in Boston and in several places around the country. She lives in Newton with her husband, Len, and is the proud mother of two, as well as a grandmother. In 2016, she was admitted to the EAFIT University music undergraduate program under the direction of Professor Sandra Caicedo, receiving her diploma in 2021. During the second semester of 2017, she took singing lessons with sopranos Nuray Karabay-Ammicht and Christine Wagner in Vienna. She also studied with Professor Gretchen Windt from the University of Kentucky. Lina Sarmiento was part of the Macondo choir and a member of the international category Cecilia Espinoza chamber choir. She was also a member of the “Madriguera” theater group at EAFIT University, with whom she debuted in many theaters in Medellin. The soprano has performed many solo roles in sacred music, including Schumann's "Requiem für Mignon," Faure’s "Pie Jesu" from his Requiem, and solos in Rutter’s Requiem. She has also sung solo roles in operas and zarzuelas such as Raquel in “La corte del faraón,” Coral in “La leyenda del beso,” and Suor Dolcina and Suor Genovieffa in “Suor Angelica.” Additionally, she has performed in musicals such as "Sondheim on Sondheim," interpreting songs originally sung by Leslie Kritzer. Lina holds a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, where she studied under Professor Carol Mastrodomenico. Following the remarks of the keynote and respondents, there will be time for small-group reflection and encounter, as well as Q&amp;A. Interfaith Music Night

In its second year, the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium, Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries, and Newton Community Pride are cosponsoring a FREE “Interfaith Music Night” with the help of a BC comparative theology doctoral student,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/theology/people/grad-students/navarette--jess/_jcr_content.html" target="_blank">Jess Navarette</a>. This event will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, 6:00-7:30pm, at Grace Episcopal Church, located at 76 Eldredge St. Newton, MA 02458, right off the 57-bus line (with plenty of parking in the neighborhood.) Featuring: Ever in Bloom – Kirtan Ensemble, an interreligious mix of friends, Rev. Friendly Witness: The Spiritual Ground of Quaker Social Action A hybrid conference exploring what the contemplative religious tradition of Quakerism has to say about social action. In this conference, exploring Friendly Witness, we will bring together a few Quaker scholars and practitioners to engage in conversation about this question. Immigrants' Day at the State House 2023

This year MIRA will be celebrating our 27th annual Immigrants' Day! Immigrants' Day is one of our proudest events where we gather hundreds of immigrant and refugee constituents from across the Commonwealth to celebrate their contributions and advocate for their legislative and budget priorities. This year's program will be our first back in the State House since 2019! 2023 marks positive, new beginnings in immigration politics and immigrant-led initiatives that we invite you to support with us. We will be advocating for housing security, language access, foreign trained medical licensure, the Safe Communities Act, tuition equity, and child healthcare. The event will kick off with a speaking program, followed by visits with legislators where community members can speak directly to the policies that affect their lives. Volunteer participants will also have the opportunity to freely visit individual offices. We are privileged to have State Representative Dan Sena as our Master of Ceremonies! El Día del Inmigrante es uno de los eventos que más nos enorgullece, donde reunimos a cientos de inmigrantes y refugiados de todo el estado para celebrar sus contribuciones a la comunidad y abogar por sus prioridades legislativas y de presupuestos. ¡El programa de este año será nuestro primer regreso a la Casa Estatal desde el 2019! Este 2023 marca nuevos comienzos positivos en la política de inmigración e iniciativas que han sido dirigidas por inmigrantes, es por eso que los invitamos a apoyar estos cambios juntos. El 29 de Marzo, abogaremos por prevención de falta de vivienda, capacidad de acceder información en el idioma propio, licencias médicas para profesionales extranjeros, una Ley para tener comunidades más seguras, matrículas universitarias equitativas, y atención médica para niños. El evento comenzará con discursos por algunos oradores invitados, seguido por visitas programadas con legisladores donde la comunidad participante puede hablar directamente sobre las políticas que más los afecta.
