Walid Raad: 2023-2024 Solomon Fellow

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University are thrilled to welcome artist Walid Raad as the 2024 Solomon Fellow. Please join us for an artist talk on April 11. About the Artist In part, an artist and a Professor of Art in The Cooper Union, and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Photography in Bard College (2023-2024). The list of exhibitions (good, bad and mediocre ones); awards and grants (merited, not merited, grateful for, rejected and/or returned); education (some of it thought-provoking; some of it, less so); publications (I am fond of some of my books, but more so of the books of Jalal Toufic. You can find his here: jalaltoufic.com), can be found somewhere online. The Solomon Fellowship invites artists, filmmakers, and critics with strong visions and voices, embedding them into the life of the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies. Fellows interact with students and faculty through class visits, workshops, and a public presentation, deepening the impact of visiting artists through student engagement. The Fellowship, a generous gift of the Solomon Family, extends visiting artists' involvement in the life of the Department and the University at large.

Anicka Yi: 2023-2024 Josep Luis Sert Practitioner in the Arts

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University are excited to welcome artist Anicka Yi as the 2023-2024 Josep Luis Sert Practitioner in the Arts.  About the Artist Anicka Yi (b. 1971 in Seoul, South Korea) is a Korean-American conceptual artist known for her focus on olfaction and her use of unorthodox, living, and perishable materials. Informed by scientific research, biology, and perfumers, Anicka Yi has produced a unique body of work over the past decade at the intersection of politics and macrobiotics. Her practice questions the increasingly hazy taxonomic distinctions between what is human, animal, plant and machine, and is the result of an alchemical process of experimentation that explores often incompatible materials. She collaborates with researchers to create media that are often inherently political, and delves into the cultural conditioning of sense and perception in a way she describes as a "biopolitics of the senses." Her diverse installations, which draw on scientific concepts and techniques to activate vivid fictional scenarios, ask incisive questions about human psychology and the workings of society. Yi's work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at institutions around the world, including Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan; Tate Modern, London; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; List Visual Arts Center, MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Kitchen, New York; and the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio. In 2016, Yi was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize and in 2019 her work was featured in the 58th International Venice Biennale, titled May You Live In Interesting Times. Anicka Yi was awarded the 2020 Tate Turbine Hall Hyundai Commission.

Opening Reception + Artist Talk for Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork: Poems of Electronic Air

Join us in celebrating the opening of Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork’s (b. 1982) first East Coast institutional solo exhibition, Poems of Electronic Air, on view February 2 to April 7, 2024. With a background in digital music composition and archaeoacoustics, as well as involvement in noise, electronic, and dance music scenes, Kiyomi Gork creates spatialized environments that operate at the collaborative intersections of sound, communications technologies, sculpture, architecture, and performance. Combining recent sculpture with a newly commissioned, site-specific installation made for the concrete spaces within the Carpenter Center’s iconic Le Corbusier-designed building, the exhibition will depart from an array of the artist’s interests, from the sonic histories of club culture and the concert hall, to the protective qualities of clothing, to the resonances of Brutalist architecture.
