Each session features a live model who transitions through a dynamic mix of long and short poses. We work with a diverse roster of models representing different ages, genders, and body types. These are open studio sessions without formal instruction, giving you the freedom to experiment with different materials, drawing styles, and techniques as you capture the human form. Since we're working in our gallery space, please avoid oil paints or any toxic, smelly, or messy materials that could splatter or spill. Class Description: Work in Process Critical Cohort (wipCRIT) launched at the Cambridge Art Association in Spring 2022. wipCRIT is for artists committed to deepening their studio practice and developing a sustained body of work. Facilitated by Mary Bucci McCoy, the intent of each session will be to cultivate an open, reciprocal, and fully engaged dialogue between artists. What you can expect in wipCRIT: Give and take constructive criticism, and supportive exchange Clarify personal and conceptual framework for your work Articulate and refine proposals and artist statements Develop a studio journal writing habit Research and discuss readings and essays on art, artists, art theory and criticism Expand through grounding assignments, challenges, and topical conversation Share links to podcasts, virtual shows, related YouTube videos Connect with opportunities and new networks Thrive in a community of invested peer inspiration and support Please read through the following list of requirements before registering. Artists should have a consistent body of work, a working professional website, and access to a laptop or desktop computer (no iPads or iPhones). You must be comfortable using zoom, chat, google docs and drive, and other platforms. All artists will participate in a mandatory tech check-in before the first class. Cohort Leader: Mary Bucci McCoy Mary Bucci McCoy is a visual artist, designer, writer, and educator whose intimately scaled, non-objective paintings explore the interrelationships of the human, animal, vegetal, and mineral worlds. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Gray Contemporary, Houston; Kingston Gallery, Boston; Museum St. Wendel, Germany; and Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Philadelphia. She has been an artist in residence at Mass MoCA and Vermont Studio Center, and her work has been supported by a Painting Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. In addition to her studio practice, Mary has taught at Montserrat College of Art, written extensively about art for various publications, and served on the Beverly Cultural Council and Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition. She holds degrees from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and lives and works on the coast north of Boston. Workshop Description Join us for a hands-on, beginner-friendly Direct Animation Workshop at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery. In just 3 hours, you’ll hand-paint, scratch, collage, and experiment directly on 16mm film—no camera needed—to bring your own annimation to life. Discover the art of motion, make a mess, and leave with your own mini film masterpiece. Materials: No strict requirements. Feel free to bring any ink, paint, blue tape, or other painting tools you'd like to use. The instructor will provide both blank and vintage used film for students to choose from. Screening: At the end of the class, students will exhibit their "art films" on a 16mm projector. Instructor Yue Hua (she/her) is a (Chinese-American) filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist who uses analog film, expanded cinema, and digital media to explore cross-cultural identity , language, and the female experience from a personal lens. Her work, often incorporating personal narrative and cultural background, dismantles traditional roles and empowers women through visual storytelling. She is drawn to film as both material and metaphor: luminous yet vulnerable, recording light and time while bearing the marks of decay. Through analog processes such as scratching, hand-coloring, eco-printing, and weaving discarded 16mm strips, she allows natural forces such as weather, plants, and sunlight to shape outcomes. Her films and performances have been featured internationally at film festivals and galleries, including Revolution Per Minute Film Festivals, Mono No Aware Film Festival, Millennium Film Workshop Channel, Fisura International Festival of Experimental Film &amp; Video, Brooklyn Film Festival, and AVIFF le festival du film d'artiste. Yue holds a BFA from the China Academy of Art, majoring in film and television production, and an MFA in Film and Media Arts at Emerson College. She is a recipient of the UFVA Carole Fielding Grant, Emerging Artist Award from RPM Festival, New England Local Filmmaker Award, and I-Park Residency at CT, and has served as a teaching fellow at Emerson College and RISD. This workshop explores sculptural weaving through coiling and random weave techniques, utilizing traditional basket weaving methods as a way to build volume and flexible structures, with an emphasis on the resourceful use of upcycled textiles and objects. About Jeffrey Nowlin Jeffrey Nowlin is fiber artist and sculptor whose work investigates the social systems which impact daily life. His sculptures, created with found fabrics, fibers and reclaimed objects, address the complex networks of human life. Nowlin uses weaving, sewing, assemblage,and carving as tools to consider the interwoven themes of mental and physical illness, queerness, race, and economic precarity. He utilizes formal elements to facilitate conversation on how visual culture and critical theory contribute to contemporary art. Nowlin works in Boston as a teacher of foundation studio art and art education. He graduated with an MFA in 3D arts from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2019 and a BFA in Sculpture from Boston University in 2010. His work has been part of numerous Boston area group shows, including those at the Boston Sculptors Gallery, I3C artist Group, and the Kingston Gallery. He is a board member of the Piano Craft Gallery, where he exhibited his first solo exhibition in 2020.

Glimmer explores illumination in its many forms — from literal light, shimmer, and radiance, to metaphorical illumination touching on emotional insight, spiritual presence, and social awareness. The exhibition includes 2D, 3D, and video work presented across two Cambridge galleries: the Kathryn Schultz Gallery at 25 Lowell Street and CAA @ University Place at 124 Mount Auburn Street. About Jessica Roscio Jessica Roscio joined the Danforth Art Museum in 2011, was appointed Curator in 2015, and became the Director in 2020. She has overseen curatorial and administrative operations since the Museum became a part of Framingham State University. Prior to the Danforth, Roscio held positions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She is a regular contributor to Aspect Initiative, an online gallery focusing on contemporary photography. She has juried numerous exhibitions across media both regionally and nationally. Roscio has an MA in Art History from the University at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in American Studies, with a focus on the History of Photography, from Boston University.

This approach fosters a dynamic and inclusive dialogue, allowing participants to construct meaning collectively and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Through guided questions such as "What is going on in this picture?", "What do you see that makes you say that?", and "What more can we find?", VTS transforms the art viewing experience into an active and participatory learning process. Akanksa Upadhyay Akanksa Upadhyay is a Principal Design Researcher at the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, working on developing blockchain-based products. She received her Visual Thinking Strategies @ Work Facilitator accreditation through the Hailey Group. In her free time, she works on her ceramics practice and reads no less than three books at a time. Catherine Clarke Catherine Clarke is a Manager of New Hire Experience at Fidelity Investments with a BFA in design from Northeastern University. She is a leader for Fidelity Enable, an advocacy group for people with disabilities, and a certified Visual Thinking Strategies @ Work Facilitator through the Hailey Group. Inclusion and community care is fundamental to her design practice. She is on the board of directors of CoDesign Collaborative.

This session will be guided by Catherine Clarke, who combines her meditation practice with her Visual Thinking Strategies training to create a meaningful blend of mindful awareness and artistic engagement. Catherine will adapt her meditation guidance to complement our current National Prize Show exhibition, offering participants an opportunity to explore inner stillness while surrounded by inspiring artwork. Designed specifically for beginners, this session will include gentle breathing techniques and light stretching to help participants settle into a comfortable meditative state. Through focus on inner strength and calming breathwork, participants will have the opportunity to release tension, recharge, and reconnect with their body and breath while reclaiming a sense of well-being. With only eight spaces available, this intimate session provides a special opportunity to practice meditation in the tranquil setting of our gallery, immersed among beautiful works of art. The 90-minute session will begin with one hour of guided meditation, followed by light refreshments including fresh fruit and infused water to help participants transition back to their day in a nourished and grounded way. This gentle, contemplative session welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels, with mindful instruction that allows everyone to practice comfortably at their own pace. As the holiday season approaches with its inevitable busyness, this offers a perfect opportunity to step back from the craziness and find moments of peace and clarity. Please bring a yoga mat and water bottle. About Catherine Clarke Catherine Clarke is a 200hr registered yoga teacher practicing in the Boston area. She is also an artist and volunteer with CAA. Her teaching style focuses on mindfulness, yoga philosophy, and honoring yoga’s roots. Her classes are choice based and are open to all levels of experience. Her background in art and design and passion for yoga makes this a great space for all types of creatives. In addition, Catherine is also a certified Visual Thinking Strategies @ Work Facilitator through the Hailey Group. Inclusion and community care is fundamental to her design practice.

How to Photograph Your Art with Erik Gehring Please choose only one session when registering Session A Monday, November 3 from noon-2pm Session B Monday, November 3 from 3pm-5pm Location Kathryn Schultz Gallery, 25 Lowell St. Cambridge MA Admission $50 CAA Member $65 General Admission Maximum number of attendees: 10 per session Description Artists need high-quality digital images for promotional purposes, as well as for submission to exhibits and other opportunities to display your artwork. This hands-on workshop is designed to teach artists how to create these images, using the tools they have at hand, particularly their cell phone camera and/or point and shoot camera. Following an instructional period on basic principles, participants will have the opportunity to create their own images of their own art under the tutelage of the workshop instructor. Participants Should Plan to Bring to the Workshop: - Cell phone or point and shoot camera, and knowledge of how to use that camera. - One piece of their artwork (either 2- or 3-dimensional) that they plan to photograph. - For 2-D work, please do not bring framed pieces, just the artwork itself is best. - Artwork should not exceed 48 inches on the longest side. About the instructor Erik Gehring is a freelance photographer who specializes in trees and natural landscapes. He is the Director at the Menino Arts Center, home of the Hyde Park Art Association, and he is a past President of the Boston Camera Club. He lives in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston with his wife Julie, sons Carl and William, and dog Comet. Although Erik enjoys photographing natural environments all over New England, his favorite destination is Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. Erik’s work has appeared in Yankee Magazine, AMC’s Outdoors, Northern Woodlands, the Boston Globe, the Boston Metro, the Cape Cod Times, E the Environmental Magazine, and other publications. He has shown his fine art prints at galleries throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Erik also has lectured and taught workshops at the Arboretum, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Photographic Resource Center in Cambridge, the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, the Cambridge Art Association, the Concord Art Association, the Hyde Park Art Association, and at locations all over New England for BlueHour Photo Ventures. Digitizing your Artwork with Digital Silver Imaging Saturday, October 18 2025 10:00AM-5:30PM For $120 Joe and Nick will digitize as many paintings, prints, collages etc as you can carry into the DSI imaging lab!* *within the given time and size restrictions Take advantage of this opportunity to professionally digitize your artwork with Digital Silver Imaging (DSI), a leader in fine art reproduction. Joe and Nick from Digital Silver Imaging will set up their state-of-the-art digitization camera system at their lab in Belmont. You will have 20 minutes to work with a team member - when we ran this event last winter our artists were able to digitize up to a dozen pieces of artwork per session or more! It depends on the size of the artwork (if the art is similar in size, it is easier to capture more images quickly). We recommend you bring extra artwork (several artists had time left over at the end of their session and wished they had brought more work). All artwork has to be under 28" on the longest size. You will leave with ultra-high resolution files, museum quality reproductions of your artwork, suitable for printing on art paper (ie "giclee prints") or to use on your website or in a digital portfolio.
