How to Photograph your Art

Artists need high-quality digital images for promotional purposes, as well as for submission to exhibits and other opportunities to display your artwork. This hands-on workshop is designed to teach artists how to create these images, using the tools they have at hand, particularly their cell phone camera and/or point and shoot camera. Following an instructional period on basic principles, participants will have the opportunity to create their own images of their own art under the tutelage of the workshop instructor. Participants Should Plan to Bring to the Workshop: - Cell phone or point and shoot camera, and knowledge of how to use that camera. - One piece of their artwork (either 2- or 3-dimensional) that they plan to photograph. - For 2-D work, please do not bring framed pieces, just the artwork itself is best. - Artwork should not exceed 48 inches on the longest side. About the instructor Erik Gehring is a freelance photographer who specializes in trees and natural landscapes. He is the Director at the Menino Arts Center, home of the Hyde Park Art Association, and he is a past President of the Boston Camera Club. He lives in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston with his wife Julie, sons Carl and William, and dog Comet. Although Erik enjoys photographing natural environments all over New England, his favorite destination is Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. Erik’s work has appeared in Yankee Magazine, AMC’s Outdoors, Northern Woodlands, the Boston Globe, the Boston Metro, the Cape Cod Times, E the Environmental Magazine, and other publications. He has shown his fine art prints at galleries throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Erik also has lectured and taught workshops at the Arboretum, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Photographic Resource Center in Cambridge, the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, the Cambridge Art Association, the Concord Art Association, the Hyde Park Art Association, and at locations all over New England for BlueHour Photo Ventures. Portfolio Reviews

Since 2008, the Cambridge Art Association (CAA) has hosted an all-media portfolio review for New England-based artists. Currently, this is the only ongoing all-media portfolio review for professional artists in Eastern Massachusetts. Portfolio Reviews are a valuable step in an artist’s professional development, and give the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and receive critical feedback from leading curators, gallerists, and independent arts professionals. Now held each fall in Cambridge MA, the in-person Portfolio Review offers artists the opportunity to connect face-to-face with curators, gallerists, and arts professionals. This format fosters direct, meaningful dialogue and allows artists to present physical or digital work in a supportive, professional environment—enhancing feedback, networking, and overall engagement. You do NOT need to be a member of the Cambridge Art Association to participate. Our Reviewers Matilda Biscaldi – Meridian Art Consulting, Art Consultant Jessica Roscio – Danforth Art Museum, Director and Curator Lauren Szumita – Cantor Art Gallery at Holy Cross, Director + Curator Molly Rappoli – Galaray House, Co-founder and Director Christina Godfrey – Savage Godfrey Gallery, Director Lynne Cooney - Montserrat College of Art, Director of Exhibitions and Galleries

How to Give and Receive Artistic Feedback

How do you give feedback that's honest without being discouraging — and how do you receive it without becoming defensive? As an artist, giving and receiving critique is integral to growth. Outside of an academic setting, it can be difficult to find a supportive, constructive environment, and for self-taught artists, group critiques can feel intimidating. CAA invites artists at all stages of their careers to this panel discussion on best practices for group critiques and getting the most out of critiques and portfolio reviews. Topics include: Finding and building the right community How to find a critique group that's the right fit, and what makes such groups sustainable over time. Preparing and presenting work How much context to give, and how to stay grounded rather than over-explaining or becoming defensive. Turning feedback into action How to sort through conflicting opinions and determine what's worth acting on. Navigating portfolio reviews What reviewers look for in the first 30 seconds, and how to make the most of a review. Giving and receiving feedback with honesty and care How to offer honest feedback without discouraging, and receive it without getting defensive. This event is offered as professional development for CAA artist members, especially as preparation for our upcoming in-person CAA Portfolio Reviews and CAA miniCRITS.
