Weaving the Wrackline with Rebecca McGee Tuck

We are thrilled to have found object fiber sculptor and art activist Rebecca McGee Tuck leading this workshop for us in conjunction with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gatherfibersymposium.com/">Gather Fiber Symposium</a>&nbsp;this April! Join artist Rebecca McGee Tuck for a marine debris weaving workshop. In this hands-on experience, participants will learn weaving techniques to create their own unique pieces of sustainable fiber art. Each participant will take home their own finished woven artwork that promotes environmental awareness and positive impact. Come join me as we bend the rules of weaving and create a meaningful piece of art as we celebrate Earth Month! Rebecca will provide weaving materials from her collection of scavenged sea trash and will loan each registered artist an individual lap loom for the duration of the workshop. About Rebecca McGee Tuck is a fiber artist, sculptor and dedicated ocean activist. Her artwork serves as a visual narrative, transforming discarded materials from our throw-away society into environmentally aware works of art. Tuck's collaborative project, Sculpture Monster: Creature from the Plasticine Era was featured in Fiber Art Now Magazine for receiving their grant for public art in Summer of 2024. Her work has been juried in exhibitions across the Northeast, including the Cape Cod Art Museum, Fitchburg Art Museum, Boston Sculptors Gallery, Viridian Artists Gallery in New York City, and the St. Botolph Club in Boston. Tuck has held artist residencies at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and the DNA Residency in Provincetown, MA. Her series, “Along the Wrack Line,” addresses the pressing issue of debris and plastic pollution on New England beaches, highlighting the environmental challenges faced by our coastal regions.

MEND/AMEND with Winnie van der Rijn

We are thrilled to have multi-disciplinary artist of opportunity Winnie van der Rijn leading this workshop for us in conjunction with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gatherfibersymposium.com/">Gather Fiber Symposium</a>&nbsp;this April! Join me for a Quilting Bee style mending event! Quilting Bees have traditionally been used as a place for individuals to come together and affirm their communities. Taking this idea as inspiration we will we come together to collectively mend and amend a large vintage, tattered, stained, rescued American Flag. As we stitch we will take the opportunity to talk about ideas of freedom, as well as our concerns, fears, hopes and dreams for the country. ﻿About the Instructor Winnie van der Rijn is a multi-disciplinary artist of opportunity– collecting materials, experimenting with techniques and pursuing her curiosities. Her art practice includes textiles, sculpture, collage and collaboration (which she considers its own art form). She plays well with others. Winnie actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and internationally. A life long learner, Winnie graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 with a BA in Sociology. She has studied printmaking, sculpture, metalsmithing and Marxist theory. In addition, Winnie has explored weaving, machine knitting, bookmaking, altars, exploding picture boxes, automata, shoe making, millinery, sewing, fusing, stamping, metal weaving, resin, riveting, precious metal clay and mixed media. She is wildly curious about how things are made. Her recently completed project 'How to Dismantle the Patriarchy' has shown in various locations including the Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY), Dairy Arts (Boulder, CO), Museum of Sonoma County (Santa Rosa, CA), The New Bauhaus (Iasi Romania), Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN) and the self invented Museum of Natural Consequences (New York, NY). A. portion of the project will be on display on the CAA Wall in Kendall Square this Spring. Winnie has completed residencies at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, FabScrap in NYC, Chateau Orquevaux in France and MASSMoCA in Massachusetts. Winnie, a seventh generation Californian, is currently based in Cambridge. She and her husband are redefining what it means to be empty nesters.

Patterns appear everywhere in nature, from the petals of a flower to the crystalline structures of a snowflake. They highlight the order and chaos of nature, and form the building blocks of life around us. About the Juror | Hadley P. Powell’s&nbsp;expertise spans from Old Master prints to Contemporary art. She started her career at Christie’s, New York as a specialist in the Prints &amp; Multiples department where she researched and cataloged prints from Rembrandt to Rauschenberg. Subsequently in the Impressionist &amp; Modern Art department, she worked on the high profile evening sales, where she advised clients buying and selling at auction and assisted in private collection management and fine art appraisals.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hadley received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a minor in Economics from Union College. She holds a Master’s degree in Modern Art, Connoisseurship and the History of the Art Market from Christie’s Education, New York.&nbsp;Her prize-winning thesis studied the impact of the 1913 Armory Show on George Bellows’s Monhegan Island, Maine paintings. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts and Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Cambridge Art Association | Holiday Small Works Sale

Join in a CAA tradition – the Holiday Small Works Sale, hosted IN-PERSON at 25 Lowell St., Cambridge. The Holiday Small Works Sale is a showcase of affordable artworks – including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, ceramics, and other fine art mediums.  10% of CAA’s revenues from this sale will support the <a href="https://www.cambridgeart.org/emergency-fund-for-visual-artists/">Emergency Fund for Visual Artists</a>. This hands-on workshop is designed to teach artists how to create these images, using the tools they have at hand, particularly their cell phone camera and/or point and shoot camera. Following an instructional period on basic principles, participants will have the opportunity to create their own images of their own art under the tutelage of the workshop instructor.&nbsp; Participants Should Plan to Bring to the Workshop: - Cell phone or point and shoot camera, and knowledge of how to use that camera. -&nbsp;One piece of their artwork (either 2- or 3-dimensional) that they plan to photograph. -&nbsp;For 2-D work, please do not bring framed pieces, just the artwork itself is best. -&nbsp;Artwork should not exceed 48 inches on the longest side. Maximum 10 people per session. About the instructor Erik Gehring is a freelance photographer who specializes in trees and natural landscapes. He is the Director at the Menino Arts Center, home of the Hyde Park Art Association, and he is a past President of the Boston Camera Club. He lives in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston with his wife Julie, sons Carl and William, and dog Comet. Although Erik enjoys photographing natural environments all over New England, his favorite destination is Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. Erik’s work has appeared in Yankee Magazine, AMC’s Outdoors, Northern Woodlands, the Boston Globe, the Boston Metro, the Cape Cod Times, E the Environmental Magazine, and other publications. He has shown his fine art prints at galleries throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
