New Voices, Shared Stories: The Premiere of Free to All (A Documentary Film)

A premier documentary film screening of Free to All.  Free to All is set in Boston and follows the moving, personal journeys of individuals striving to master an additional language. Through their participation in the Boston Public Library's English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, they find not only educational resources but also immense warmth, support, and a vital sense of community through diverse learning activities. This film is a result of a collaborative project where BPL's ESOL students went behind the camera to tell their own stories. The premiere event is more than just a film screening about ESOL students as filmmakers and their experiences, it's a celebration of the power of community storytelling and language learning. Come celebrate these new voices and the spirit of the BPL community.

President Biden has often said, “The world is at an inflection point.” Indeed, the United States faces urgent international and transnational challenges. In these dangerous times, how important can diplomacy be? Military intervention has always remained an alternative, and its use has grown in frequency since the nation’s founding. If the State Department is, “at the end of the day, a national security agency” as Deputy Secretary Verma has said, how well is the department handling our current global inflection point? What are the State Department’s priorities, and how well is it equipped to address them? Join us for WorldBoston’s annual&nbsp;State of the State Department&nbsp;special event, an opportunity to consider the U.S. State Department and American diplomacy within the context of U.S. national interests. Deputy Secretary Verma previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, where he led one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions and championed historic progress in bilateral ties. He is also a former Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs and the former National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. He has also had a distinguished career in the private sector, most recently serving as the Chief Legal Officer and Head of Global Public Policy for Mastercard. He is a former partner at the law firm of Steptoe &amp; Johnson, and the Vice Chairman of The Asia Group, a global consulting firm. He also served on the T. Rowe Price corporate board of directors. Deputy Secretary Verma is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and the recipient of numerous military awards and civilian decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the State Department’s Distinguished Service Award. He is also the recipient of the Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship, and the Chief Justice Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award. Deputy Secretary Verma was a member of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, the Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Commission, and the Secretary of State’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board. He has served on a number of non-profit boards, including the Ford Foundation, Lehigh University, and the National Endowment for Democracy. While at Harvard, she directed the Initiative on Religion in International Affairs and was the assistant director of the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies. She was educated at the University of Chicago (MA and Ph.D. in political science) and at the University of California, Santa Barbara (BA in political science and Slavic languages and literature, summa cum laude). Prior to this, she spent four years in the United States Army as a Russian linguist. Monica’s areas of research include international security, ethnic and religious violence, civil wars and demography. The Power of Truths: Cinematic Chronicles of Racism and Resistance

In honor of Juneteenth, join us for&nbsp;a free film screening and panel discussion in partnership with Self-Evident Education and the National Parks Service: Boston. Film Screening — Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory

As part of our&nbsp;"Revolutionary Music: Music and Social Change" programmatic theme, join us for a film screening&nbsp;of a&nbsp;joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. Having moved from Manila to California in the early sixties, she and her sister, bassist Jean, turned in their folk guitars for electric guitar and bass and formed a succession of all-girl bands. By 1969 they were in Hollywood with their band Fanny, one of the first all women’s rock bands to be signed to a major label (Reprise). Through five successful albums and extensive touring of Europe and North America, Fanny served notice that women could do more than simply sing, they could write and play passionate rock ‘n roll. June released her autobiography&nbsp;Land of a Thousand Bridges: Island Girl in a Rock ‘n Roll World&nbsp;in 2015, and her latest CD, “Snapshots,” is now available ~ with “Girls Don’t Dream” a particular favorite of hers. Her albums Asianblue and Girl Versions were nominated for Pop Album of The Year at the Juno Awards. Emm appears on albums by David Bowie and Rob Zombie. In 2013, Emm helped make the first music video in outer space when she helped arrange a new version of “Space Oddity” for astronaut Chris Hadfield. The song was recorded partly on earth and partly aboard the International Space Station. This collaboration has received more than 200 million views on YouTube. Boston Typewriter Orchestra: The Revolution Will Be Typewritten!

The Boston Typewriter Orchestra (BTO) is a collective endeavor which engages in rhythmic typewriter manipulation combined with elements of performance, comedy and satire. Think&nbsp;Stomp&nbsp;meets “The Office”. What is an instrument? Can music be performed on objects of the business world? What is the intersection of industry and art? Where can we find beauty and purpose in the world’s relentless grind and repetition? For over 20 years The Boston Typewriter Orchestra have posed these questions, challenging the very notion of music itself. Liberated from the rules of traditional music, the BTO continues to reinvent itself with every song. Yet through the din, listeners can hear elements of dub, metal, musique concrète, French house, and garage to name but a few genres they routinely explore. Founded in 2004, The Orchestra got its start appearing at house parties, art galleries, and street festivals. Tiril Jackson is a Norwegian singer, songwriter, and producer living in Boston. At the age of 12, she was put into vocal lessons after her family noticed her expanding interest in performing. Since then, Tiril´s sound has evolved to have a soulful essence with a mixture of modern jazz, R&amp;B, and neo-soul. Her music draws heavily from life experiences and challenges she has had trying to find herself. Lowell Lecture — Dr. John Edward Hasse: The Music of Civil Rights, from Strange Fruit to The Roots

Music has always been central to the African American quest for freedom. The Civil Rights struggle and its music provided some of America’s most powerful calls of hope, moral clarity, and equity. During the 19th century, spirituals such as&nbsp;Steal Away&nbsp;carried coded protest. In the 20th century, protest became explicit. In the 1930s Ethel Waters sang an anti-lynching song that shocked Broadway and Billie Holiday bravely recorded the stinging song&nbsp;Strange Fruit. Duke Ellington’s long career spoke for racial respect and civil rights in such pieces as Black Beauty and [Martin Luther]&nbsp;King Fit the Battle of Alabam’. As political action picked up and in the 1950s and 1960s,&nbsp;We Shall Overcome&nbsp;became the clarion anthem of the Civil Rights movement and central to America’s moral quest for “a more perfect Union.” Old songs like&nbsp;This Little Light of Mine&nbsp;took on new meaning and fresh songs appeared such as&nbsp;If You Miss Me from the Back of the Bus. Black and white activists alike sang Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind. And great artists—such as Sam Cooke (A Change is Gonna Come), The Impressions (People Get Ready), James Brown (Say It Loud), Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, on up to The Roots—all sang to advance respect and equality. Dr. John Edward Hasse, long-time music curator at the Smithsonian and Duke Ellington’s biographer, plays stirring video clips of these songs that inspired, motivated, and advocated for what Martin Luther King called for in his “I have a dream” speech: that we all be judged not by the color of our skin, “but by the content of our character.” He&nbsp;will also&nbsp;play works by W.C.
