Join us for a lively conversation with Alyssa Pacy, Archivist at the Cambridge Public Library, Charles Sullivan, Executive Director of the Cambridge Historical Commission, Dr. Kris Manjapra, Executive Director of Black History in Action Cambridge, and members of our community as we view and discuss yearly censuses, research especially the effects of redlining, and first-hand community experience of the economic and societal changes that led to the decrease of the black community throughout Cambridge.

Oh Glory II

Join us as we celebrate the black experience through music and poetry created by black composers and poets. Oh Glory II&nbsp;is a continuation of composer and baritone&nbsp;James Dargan's exploration of different Black composers and the Black poets they set to music. Dargan shares that the complexity and variety of this music show the nuance of Black life. Being a Black artist is incredible, so this program focuses on the glory and depth of Blackness, and on my lived experience as a Black musician. We welcome you to join us in this powerful musical exploration. This event is presented in partnership with Zora's Candor and Castle of our Skins.

LOVE, JOY &amp; POWER: Tools For Liberation&nbsp;is an exciting new documentary from Emmy winning director Daresha Kyi about the co-founders of the Black Voters Matter Fund, Cliff &amp; April Albright and LaTosha Brown, the work they do every day to empower African American communities especially in the rural south, and the crucial role they played in flipping Georgia from red to blue in the 2020 Presidential election and handing President Biden control of the Senate through the 2021 Georgia Senate Runoffs. The Evolution of a Black Classical Musician

Join bassoonist Lecolion Washington as he performs a recital featuring music from his album&nbsp;Legacy: Music for Bassoon by African American Composers.&nbsp;You will also learn how a conversation with Archbishop Desmond Tutu transformed Lecolion's perception of the power of music and the trajectory for his career. Come to also be part of a discussion around the ways in which the identities of musicians can work alongside their artistry to have even greater impact. We Black Folk Showcase featuring Cliff Notez and Zion Rodman

Join us for a powerful night of genre-bending music, storytelling, and Black expression as We Black Folk showcases the visionary Cliff Notez alongside the soulful rock stylings of Zion Rodman. Through introspective lyricism, cinematic soundscapes, and boundary-pushing performance, this show centers narratives that challenge, uplift, and reimagine what folk can be.

"African American Writers and Poets as Agents of Change" by Charles Coe

Writer, Poet and Educator Charles Coe will highlight African-American writers and poets who've promoted the causes of social and political justice. He'll discuss artists such as enslaved Phillis Wheatley, the first African American to print a book of poetry; Abolitionist Frederick Douglas; great writers of the Harlem Renaissance such as Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, and Zora Neale Hurston; and modern writers such as Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Etheridge Knight.

John Kordalewski, Craig Harris, and Wes Brown Jazz Concert

Trombonist Craig Harris, bassist Wes Brown, and pianist John Kordalewski join together for a special trio performance. Expect the music to be both "inside" and "outside." All three veteran improvisors studied with the great Makanda Ken McIntyre, and have performed frequently in Boston as part of the Makanda Project, which Mr. Kordalewski leads. Performer Biographies: CRAIG HARRIS has been considered one of the leading trombonists of his generation since he burst on the scene in the late 1970s, performing with Sun Ra, Abdullah Ibrahim and others while leading his own groups as well. He has been involved in a wide array of multimedia projects involving artists from other disciplines, and recently co-wrote the score for the film&nbsp;Judas and the Black Messiah. He is also currently active in organizing jazz concerts in Harlem, New York, where he lives, and performing frequently with his large group Harlem Nightsongs. WES BROWN has toured and recorded with musicians ranging from the legendary pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines to modern masters such as Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Davis, Anthony Braxton, Bill Barron, and Ed Blackwell. He has been a member of Royal Hartigan's Blood Drum Spirit group for three decades, and also toured with reggae and Afro-pop groups. JOHN KORDALEWSKI is best known as the leader of the Makanda Project, a 13-piece group that plays primarily his arrangements of previously unheard compositions by Makanda Ken McIntyre. The Makanda Project has played a unique role in the Boston jazz scene by presenting self-produced free concerts, primarily in the Roxbury neighborhood, for the past 20 years. As a pianist, he has worked with musicians such as Ricky Ford, Carl Grubbs, and South African trumpeter Feya Faku.

The Prayers of Black Folks: Steph Davis and Jenny Oliver Music/Dance

Black History in Action (BHAC) at St. Augustine’s is proudly hosting The Prayers of Black Folks: Steph Davis and Jenny Oliver, a music and dance performance. Steph Davis is a marimbist and cultural activist. Their music engages traditions, epistemologies, and aesthetics from the African diaspora as means for uncovering truthful historiographies, finding creative self-actualization, and reaching for collective liberation. Hailed by The Washington Post as a "captivating" performer who brings "bright humanity and expressive depth" to contemporary music, Steph is a marimba soloist and chamber musician touring throughout the United States. Integrating Black and Western European classical music, traditional African American spirituals, and Ghanaian gyil songs, their performances explore the cultural and political landscape of the African diaspora. Through their arrangements and commissions, Steph has contributed over 20 works by Black composers to the marimba's solo and chamber repertoire. They have premiered works by Alissa Voth, Damien Geter, and Pamela Z, among others. A researcher and scholar of African American music, Steph is a teaching artist with Castle of our Skins, a Black arts institution. They are also an instructor of composition, contemporary music, and core studies at the Boston Conservatory.
