All-Ages Insect Safari

Join us for an interactive look at all the tiny critters that crawl, fly, or slither through the Arboretum landscape. We will have sweep nets and bug boxes to catch bugs in Kent Field, digital microscopes to get a closer look, and entomologists to help us identify everything we find. This is an all-ages, interactive program: come prepared to move around and get up close with some bugs and insects! This is a drop-in event: join us any time between 10:00am and 12:00pm. Location: This event takes place in the Conifer Collection (<a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/51gEMyjhbx8ozgbb8">see map</a>), just across the footbridge that leads from Hemlock Hill Road. There will be signs directing participants from Flora Way Gate to the event. Accessibility: This program begins on an intersection of dirt paths in the Conifer Collection, just over a small wooden bridge. The terrain includes a moderate slope. Plant-Based Fabric Dyeing: A Drop-In Event

Many of the plants grown at the Arboretum have been used as natural dyes for centuries: goldenrod for yellow, stinging nettle for green, madder or bloodroot for pink. Join fiber artist Maggie Ruth Haaland on the Hunnewell Lawn to learn about some of these natural dyeing methods and get a chance to try some of your own. This is a drop-in event: stop by any time between 12 and 3pm. The last fabrics will enter the dye baths at 2:30 to allow time for steeping. Fabric and dye baths will be provided. Accessibility: The Hunnewell Lawn is a flat, grassy area. Audience: This program is appropriate for all ages. Leventritt: From Design to Living Landscape

As the Leventritt Shrub and Vine Garden nears its 25th birthday, join the garden’s original architect and our own Keeper of the Living Collections to learn about the garden’s history, its design goals and principles, and how it has evolved in the past two decades. This program will begin with a short talk in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall, then move outdoors for a tour of the garden itself with Michael Dosmann and architect Gary Hilderbrand. Audience: This program is geared towards adults. Accessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair accessible. The tour route is relatively flat and will cover a crushed stone path and mowed grass. Crabapples in Bloom: Music Inspired by Nature

Gather at Peters Hill Summit for a one-of-a-kind concert celebrating the beautiful crabapple collection in peak bloom. Chloe DeSteno and Ariana Mascari, graduate students at the New England Conservatory, have assembled a collection of musical pieces about the crabapples and Peters Hill, as well as plants and the Arboretum more broadly–including one original piece composed specifically for this part of the Arboretum. The concert will feature a chamber ensemble playing genres from Renaissance to jazz, all rooted in classical music. Seating will be on the grass. We recommend bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on if desired, as chairs will not be provided. Rain date: May 3, 3:00-4:00pm. Cherry Blossom Celebration

Come celebrate Japanese culture amongst the Arboretum’s beautiful cherry blossoms with taiko drumming, traditional Japanese dance, Japanese games and calligraphy, family activities, and the inside scoop on the Arboretum’s own cherry collection. Performance schedule:<ul><li>1:45-2:00pm: Traditional Japanese dance by the Showa Boston Institute</li><li>2:00-3:00pm: Taiko Drumming with Odaiko New England</li></ul>Public parking is available on Arborway, but parking can be tight at larger events like this. Please allow yourself extra time to park or consider using other modes of transportation. If Arborway is full, there may be parking on the small side street that runs parallel to Arborway on the other side from the Arboretum. The event takes place on the grass, so please bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. Rain plan: This event will run rain or shine, but the performances will be canceled in the event of rain. W.S. Merwin: A Talk and Poetry Reading

W.S. Merwin was famed for his poetry, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice and named the United States Poet Laureate in 2010. But he was also a nature enthusiast with a deep concern for conservation. Merwin bought a plot of former agricultural land in Maui in 1977 and spent 40 years revitalizing the land, planting nearly 3,000 species of palm trees, and the estate is now recognized as one of the most important collections of palms in the world. Join us for a talk and poetry reading celebrating Merwin’s legacy. Speakers will include Sonnet Coggins, Executive Director of the Merwin Conservancy that was set up to care for Merwin’s land after his death in 2019, and Matthew Battles, Arnoldia Editor and author of a feature article on Merwin for this season’s Arnoldia issue. After the talk and Q&amp;A with the audience, we will move into a participatory poetry reading of Merwin’s works; attendees are welcome to take a turn reading or can simply sit back and listen. Flower Visitors at the Arboretum: Can Honeybees and Native Pollinators Co-Exist?

Most of us know honeybees for the delicious honey they create (and the occasional sting!). But for scientists, the non-native honeybee represents a potential threat to our native bumblebees and butterflies. Biology professor Dr. Richard Primack has been studying these insects at the Arboretum, observing flower visitors at over 600 plant species to determine if honeybees and native pollinators can co-exist. Just us for a research talk and discover the results of this years-long investigation. This is an indoor lecture in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. Accessibility: The Hunnewell Lecture Hall is wheelchair-accessible. A wheelchair-accessible path up to the building is available to the left of the stairs. Young Friends of the Arnold Arboretum Spotlight on Research at the Arnold Arboretum Hosted by the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, this event for the Young Friends of the Arnold Arboretum features an enchanting evening of food, drinks,&nbsp;live music,&nbsp;and&nbsp;content tables&nbsp;in&nbsp;our Weld Hill Research Building (1300 Centre St, Boston, MA 02131)—a state-of-the-art facility that is&nbsp;typically&nbsp;closed&nbsp;to the visiting public.&nbsp;&nbsp; Designed to appeal to those 21-45&nbsp;or who are&nbsp;young at heart, this event is a premier opportunity to immerse yourself in the plants, purpose, and passion of the Arnold Arboretum with other metropolitan nature enthusiasts.&nbsp;Come&nbsp;learn&nbsp;about the research that the Arboretum is doing in the face of climate change as we maintain our 281-acre “museum of trees.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Please note that this is a 21 and older event.&nbsp;&nbsp; Purchase tickets for $110/person, which covers individual admittance to the event,&nbsp;passed&nbsp;food, and an open wine and beer bar. The Trees are Speaking book talk with Lynda Mapes

The old-growth forests of Oregon and Washington play a vital role in the ecosystems there, supporting a wide diversity of life and sequestering carbon in enormous, long-living trees. The east coast, by contrast, has been logged and clear cut for generations and has precious little old-growth forest left. Join environmental journalist and Bullard Fellow at Harvard Forest, Lynda Mapes, for a talk about her book “The Trees are Speaking: Dispatches from the Salmon Forests.” In this thought-provoking new book, Mapes interviews scientists, loggers, and Indigenous activists to answer deep questions about the importance of old-growth forests, the conflicting desires around how to manage them, and how we can protect these forests into the future. This talk takes place in the Hunnewell Lecture Hall. There is public parking on Arborway, but parking can get tight with large programs like this: please give yourself some extra time to park and walk to the Hunnewell Building. Forest Bathing in the Arnold Arboretum

Slow down and awaken your senses on a guided sensory experience in the Arnold Arboretum. Forest Bathing, inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, is a restorative sensory exploration that supports health and healing for all beings. From increased cerebral blood flow to stronger immune defenses, come discover for yourself what happens when we unplug, slow down and open our senses to notice more of our natural surroundings. All the prompts, invitations, sharing and ways of participating are optional and open to interpretation. This program begins at Bussey Street Gate on Flora Way. Instructor Tam Willey (they/them) is a certified forest therapy guide, trainer, mentor and teacher with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and is the founder of “Toadstool Walks,” a guiding practice based in Boston, Massachusetts. Accessibility: The group will walk slowly off the main pathways on uneven terrain. Audience: This program is geared towards adults.

Spooky Plants: The Garden that Bites Back

As we ramp up for the spooky season of Halloween, join the Manager of Adult Programming and Events for a walk focused on the most sinister plants in the Arboretum’s collections. Armed with spiky thorns, sticky latex, and chemical warfare, these plant species defend themselves from hungry herbivores—and sometimes from humans who wander too close. Accessibility: This program involves walking over pavement, crushed stone, and mulch paths, including one short but steep hill. Audience: This program is geared towards adults.

Caterpillar Walk for Kids and Families

The Caterpillar Lab is moving in, and while the exhibit will be full of their munching critters and offer lots to explore, the real story is the one going on outside where these creatures are living out their strange lives in the wild. Join Caterpillar Lab Education Coordinator Sara Burrell for on a walk around the property exploring for native caterpillars and other insects–designed especially for kids and families. Learn how the Caterpillar Lab finds all of their caterpillars, learn about host plants and parasitoids, and get all of the caterpillar-finding secrets from an expert on local New England caterpillars! Because the caterpillars are much more mobile than our trees and shrubs, there’s no saying how many we will or won’t find this time: but either way there will be lots of great info about host plants and how to find caterpillars on other days! Accessibility: The walk will involve navigating uneven terrain, possibly including woodchip, gravel, and dirt paths. Audience: This walk is geared towards kids and families.
