New Jazz arrives in Arlington

CMS is proud to present! Jeff Platz’s New Root System: Jeff Platz (guitar) Brendan Carniaux (tenor saxophone, reeds) Scott Getchell (trumpet) Kit Demos (bass) Max Goldman (drums) $15, $10 for students New Root System has been performing together since 2023 with a focus on improvised music and original compositions. In 2024 the ensemble performed as a featured group in Stephen Drury’s Enchanted Circle series at New England Conservatory of Music. Currently the group is recording their first album scheduled for release in the spring 2025. In April of 2025 New Root System will return to NEC to perform excerpts from composer Cornelius Cardew’s work, Treaties. This performance will take place in Jordan Hall in conjunction with Mr. Drury’s Callithumpian consort. This is a return by CMS to Arlington just outside of Cambridge after a successful debut there last summer. A number of creative musicians reside there including trumpeter Scott Gretchell performing tonight with the New Root System, in an attempt to have Arlington recognize them and hear them and creative music not often presented in the city. Metro Boston is invited to attend this New England aggregation, not heard anywhere nearby!! Jazz in Arlington: Todd Brunel Jazz 4tet: New Emergence: The Out and the Sublime.

Todd Brunel is a critically acclaimed clarinetist and sax player who has never been able to follow directions or labels. He has performed with John Tchicai, Lawrence ‘Butch’ Morris and folk icon Judy Collins. He has made numerous recordings with PBS and collaborates frequently with composer P Andrew Willis. He is a member of Know Orchestra and Listen to This (with Rick M.) and a former member of MusAner and the Eric Hofbauer Quintet. Laura Jordan is a contemporary percussionist who has performed with Bang-On-A-Can All Stars, has performed internationally as a world music and jazz artist. She is a Peabody Career Grant recipient and has performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Merkin Hall and is a Grover Percussion endorsing artist. Rick McLaughlin is a highly in demand bassist and professor at Berklee College of Music. He is a member of the Grammy nominated group Either Orchestra, and has performed with Don Byron, John Zorn and Danilo Perez. Peter Cassino is a professor of music at the Longy School of Music at Bard College and former department chair of the Modern American Music Department. In the 1960s Peter lived in West Berlin and performed with many aspiring young musicians of that era including trumpeter Benny Bailey, alto saxophonist Leo Wright, and drummer Joe Harris.

Taylor still plays with friends in collective ensembles like his duo with Tomas Fujiwara, Illegal Crowns (with Fujiwara, Benoit Delbecq, and Mary Halvorson), and Geometry (with Kyoko Kitamura, Tomeka Reid, and Joe Morris), and as a sideperson in Tomas Fujiwara’s Triple Double and Shizuko, Jim Hobbs &amp; the Fully Celebrated Orchestra in JP every month, and Bill Lowe’s Signifyin’ Natives. As a child prodigy Cooper-Moore played piano in churches near his birthplace in the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His performance roots in the realm of avant jazz music date to the NYC Loft Jazz era in the early/mid-70s. His first fully committed jazz group was formed in 1970 – the collective trio Apogee with David S. Ware and drummer Marc Edwards. A studio recording of this group was made in 1977, and issued as Birth of a Being on hatHut under Ware’s name in 1979 (re-mixed and re-issued in expanded form on AUM Fidelity in 2015!). He earned a B.A. in Music Education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and later studied composition-arranging at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, moving to New York in 1973. Sonny Rollins asked them to open for him at the Village Vanguard in 1973, and they did so with aplomb. Following an evidently rather trying European tour with Ware, Beaver Harris, and Brian Smith in 1981, Cooper-Moore returned home and completely destroyed his piano, with sledgehammer and fire, in his backyard. He didn’t play piano again until some years after, instead focusing his energies from 1981-1985 on developing and implementing curriculum to teach children through music via the Head Start and other music programs. Returning to New York in 1985, he spent a great part of his creative time working and performing with theatre and dance productions, largely utilizing his hand-crafted instruments. It was not until the early 90s, when William Parker asked him to join his group In Order To Survive, that Cooper-Moore’s pianistic gifts were again regularly featured in the jazz context. In the early ‘aughts the group Triptych Myth was his own first regular working jazz group in decades and together they blazed some trails and released two albums: one rich formative, and one exquisite. A destined creative re-union with David S. Ware in the Planetary Unknown quartet, the Digital Primitives trio with Assif Tsahar &amp; Chad Taylor, and continued work with William Parker followed. Cooper-Moore’s creative life continues well-strong and unabated into the present day. He was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 22nd iteration of Vision Festival, NYC on May 29, 2017. For all of Davis’ logical rigor—and her willingness to deploy it in the service of her art—she makes sure that the science informs, rather than dictates, the music’s direction. Mobile since her birth in Singapore, composer, saxophonist, and vocalist Caroline Davis’s expression covers a wide range of styles, owed to her shifting environment as a child. From angular, melody-present instrumental outfits to soulful, quirky song writing, Caroline’s persona is recognizably present. As an improviser and saxophonist, she has released six albums under her name. Davis is an advocate for social justice in the realms of gender (This Is a Movement, The New School), IAJE’s Sisters and Mutual Mentorship in Jazz, the Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, for Musicians.&nbsp;And organizing community events under the moniker Creatives for Abolition, supporting artistic endeavors and the message of prison abolition. The experimental guitarist explores multiple approaches to genre and technique through inventive playing and clever songcraft on the new album Auto. Wendy Eisenberg is an improviser and songwriter who uses guitar, pedals, the tenor banjo, the computer, the synthesizer and the voice. Their work spans genres, from jazz to noise to avant-rock to delicate songs; their performances span venues, from international festivals to intimate basements. Though often working solo as both a songwriter and improviser, with acclaimed releases on Tzadik, VDSQ, Out of your Head, and Garden Portal, they also perform in the rock band Editrix, and in endless other combinations of their heroes and peers including Allison Miller, Carla Kihlstedt, John Zorn, Billy Martin, and Caroline Davis. As a leader, she has released seven albums: &nbsp; Meanwhile, Eisenberg was actively involved in the Western Massachusetts music scene, living there until recently moving to New York, and worked with several rock and noise bands including the Birthing Hips, whose dissolution inspired&nbsp;Auto. “I need to be in a punk band at the same time as I need to be playing free improv at the same time as I need to be playing songs,” Wendy Eisenberg explains, detailing their creative process. “All at the same time—otherwise none of the practices will work for me.” Listening to Eisenberg’s work, this is easily understood. Eisenberg played in the recently defunct&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/12/05/567834546/birthing-hips-internet-is-beautifully-deranged" target="_blank">Birthing Hips</a>, the brawny and brainy punk band from Boston. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Take Eisenberg’s new record,&nbsp;Auto, for example. The album opens with the ballad “I Don’t Want To,” which combines clean sounds from Eisenberg’s ES-175 and glitchy electronics à la Jim O’Rourke and David Grubbs’ experimental creations as Gastr Del Sol. “Centreville” follows, with Eisenberg taking a tech-y and angular approach to guitar riffage, followed by the sunny, jazz-pop groove of “No Such Lack.” In just three tracks, Eisenberg has covered plenty of ground and the album proceeds with sustained versatility throughout. Each stylistic jump on&nbsp;Auto&nbsp;is studied and focused and serves a distinct musical purpose, so the album makes the case that this sort of big-ears, genre-hopping approach is home for Eisenberg and is an aesthetic in and of itself. It’s no surprise when Eisenberg name-drops composer John Zorn’s iconoclastic Naked City band—whose extreme genre-pastiche approach is both groundbreaking and truly incomparable—as part of their education. “I went to NEC [New England Conservatory] for their Contemporary Improv masters,” the guitarist says. “It happened to coincide with Zorn’s 60th birthday concerts, where I got to play a bunch of Naked City parts.” After college, Eisenberg continued to have multiple stylistic irons in the fire. Eisenberg was quick to become a regular player in the New York City experimental scene, where they stayed connected with Zorn, who released&nbsp;The Machinic Unconscious, Eisenberg’s trio record with bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle and countless Zorn projects) and drummer Ches Smith (Marc Ribot, Tim Berne). It’s easy to hear similarities between Birthing Hips—whose own “genre-play,” as Eisenberg explains, is quickly identifiable, especially on “Strip Tease,” where Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” theme can be heard accompanied by a blast of noise-rock ripping—and&nbsp;Auto, but the latter feels much more nuanced and personal. As a player, Eisenberg takes on such a wide variety of playing approaches, from angular riffing to contrapuntal chord melodies to short flashes of bossa nova comping and so much more—all of which seem to come naturally and in support of the well-crafted songs.

Records, spawned from the F.I.M. series of shows at the State Street arts spot that has become a haven and stomping ground for New Haven’s newest generation of free-improv and experimental musicians. The liner notes for HI-FI LO-IQ give a sense of what’s in store. The album “may be proof of concept, but Bookers itself is not an exercise,” the notes read. “Bookers is not self-expression, unless itching your leg or screaming in a mirror is self-expression. Bookers may be humorous, but only in the way watching a person drink milk when they expect orange juice is humorous or watching a man gravely injure himself is humorous. The bookers practice is a sound methodology in every sense, including the water one. Bookers is simple, intuitive music from Connecticut for all to enjoy.” That mix of serious and playful appears in virtually every second of the record, which finds Larocca, Rovinsky, and Duval each setting off musical ideas like tiny explosions, perhaps of live ammunition, perhaps of rubber balls or confetti, that then bounce and flutter around the room at high velocity. There is a keen sense of music from various sources being taken apart and scrambled, and of new music being built before our very ears, sometimes with the air of a furrowed brow, sometimes with the flavor of cartoon characters creating Rube Goldberg music that they already know will fail to catch their mouse, and they don’t care. Today, more than 20 years after having decided to dedicate her life to music, she walks a path where improvisation plays a leading role and she seeks to cross lines with dance and theater, with writing and poetry. She studied at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia) where she graduated obtaining the title of "Master of Music with Emphasis in Jazz". Between 2005 and 2006 she studied with the Argentine pianist Ernesto Jodos in Buenos Aires, thanks to a scholarship granted by the Fernando Sor School of Music in Bogotá and the Buenos Aires School of Contemporary Music where she was a teacher (www.escuelademusica. org). Her professional artistic life began in Bogotá, but she has had a strong development in Buenos Aires, where she has lived for 15 years. Tatiana Castro Mejía was born in Colombia. In 2004, she earned a scholarship to study with Ernesto Jodos and Rodrigo Domínguez. She played in Mair, Tekeye, Bogotaires and Proyecto de Música Contemporánea. She released Ciclos, her first album. She co-directs a music and dance collective improvisation project with dancer Aleema Curri. She leads a quintet that plays the music of Eric Dolphy. He has performed and recorded with many artists including Francisco Mela, Phil Grenadier, Jim Robitaille, Leo Blanco, Shinya Lin, Mark Walker, and John Dalton. Evan's band performs their own improvisations and compositions as well as music by Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy, and other great composers. Evan is currently a private lesson instructor for the Hopkinton Music Association, Note-Worthy Experiences and Karen Amlaw Music. John Dalton is a graduate of the U of Mass Dartmouth where he received a diverse musical education, especially in his studies with Chris Poudrier and Jim Robitaille, developeing fluency in a variety of styles as both an improvising musician and composer. He is also a published scholar in journals such as The Peer Review. John has performed with Jim Robitaille, Jing Wang, Dino Govoni, Amanda Monaco, Barry Altschul, Ricky Ford, Jerome Harris and others. This Music Series, An Appetite for Adventure continues: Brittany Karlson, bass, Forbes Graham, trumpet, Nick Neuburg, drums, 10:30pm start. &nbsp; Dudes: it starts at 10:30PM, come and Friday "party" with great music into the weekend! A growing creative musician deserving and being more and more in the spotlight, Brittany leads a Boston group of Jazz improvisers to bring her choice music and leadership to the forefront displaying her unique vocabulary of creativity! &nbsp; Bassist (&amp; vocalist) Brittany Karlson is an adventurous musician with roots in jazz, American old time and bluegrass, and other improvised music. She has become a bassist in demand from especially the Free Jazz and New Music (aka “other” improvised music), not only in Boston but beyond into other New England opportunities. She has performed across the USA, Canada, and Europe in a variety of ensemble settings, including improvised trio Letter Castle and American old-time/bluegrass/Swedish string band The Goodbye Girls. Karlson performs original songs under the moniker Karl, having released debut album “Feast Day” on Lungbasket Recordings and will release upcoming album “And the Green Grass Grows all Around” in 2020. She also has a solo project involving a comedic sound puppet show from behind the bass. As a visual artist, she makes finger puppets as well as collaborates with composer Steven Long to create collage work under the name Vanitas.&nbsp; Karlson is an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher and teaches private lessons in Jamaica Plain, Boston. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in music from Berklee College of Music in 2015 in Performance on the double bass &nbsp; Forbes Graham: more than Boston favorite, an internationally recognized improviser and conceptualist! “There are hidden secrets in the horn and a host of musical linguists uncovering new languages…FORBES GRAHAM doesn’t ignore it. He embraces the blue note and turns it “magenta haze.” The Boston-area improviser sputters and attacks the trumpet with shark-attack notes before letting out a haunting whistled horn like a meditative Don Cherry, or a gruffled stutter like a duck being strangled.&nbsp;Essences…” (Miles Beyond: The New Sounds of Trumpet, NPR, August 2010) Forbes Graham&nbsp;is a composer, musician, sound artist, and visual artist whose work explores themes of simultaneity, perceptibility, transformation and collage. His work "Encounters I" for trumpet, electronics, and voices premiered at Roulette in 2019. He performed with Michael Pisaro at (the) co-incidence festival in 2017 and has appeared at other music festivals including High Zero, Vision, and The Thing InThe Spring. He was commissioned to write a piece for the Festival of New Trumpet, and has created work for the avant-rock ensemble Normal Love.&nbsp; Graham is the creator and producer of "Beyond/Apex", a bi-weekly podcast dedicated to showcasing contemporary and experimental music. To date, this show has featured the works of over 100 composers and creatives, ranging from emerging artists such as Cecilia López and Claire Rousay to more established artists like George Lewis. &nbsp; Nick Neuburg is is a drummer/percussionist, pianist and composer originally from the greater Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Nick began music studies at an early age and quickly became an in demand musician among the local community of Jazz musicians by his teens, performing often with Pianists Mike Gerber and Antonio Adolfo and Multi-Instrumentalist and jazz great Ira Sullivan.&nbsp; After graduating high school, Nick relocated to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with the legendary drummers Rakalam Bob Moses and Billy Hart and studied composition and improvisation with pianist Anthony Coleman and Guitarist Joe Morris. Upon graduating the Conservatory in the spring of 2014 Nick remained in the greater Boston area until the summer of 2018, during which time he both remained active in the creative music scene as a performer and became busy working and teaching. Over those years, Nick was a part of the bands Aykroyd, Letter Castle, Particulars, Ryan Power, Los Greys, Every Kim Parcell, Listening Woman and Creative Healing, among others.&nbsp; Nick has been teaching private music lessons on both Drums and Piano consistently since 2015 and is excited to continue teaching in NY! As an educator, Nick strives to help students develop the fundamental skills and vocabulary as a musician that will allow them to play the music they most enjoy, making the learning and growing process as much fun as possible along the way. He is also a founding member of Adam Rudolph’s East Coast version of Go: Organic Orchestra. Haynes records for New Atlantis Records, most recently releasing Pomegranate, a quintet with Joe Morris, Ben Stapp, William Parker and Warren Smith. His pocket brass band, Knuckleball, features three cornets, tuba and drums with Taylor Ho Bynum, Herb Robertson, Ben Stapp and Eric Rosenthal. Expect a new recording release by this ensemble during 2021. Haynes’ primary focus – since 2013 – has been the cornet. He performs on Schilke XA1 Shepherds Crook and Eb Soprano cornets as well as the 1040 FL flugelhorn and X4L Bb trumpet. Across all of his instruments, he relies upon a set of custom-designed Schilke mouthpieces. He provides performed around THE UNITED STATES and European countries, and made an appearance in Greece on the Patras Jazz Celebration, at Montreal’s North Ocean Jazz festival, also at Finland’s Pori Celebration. Besides making his very own improvised music recordings, he also shows up on CDs using the Hypnotic Clambake as well as the Zairean soukous music group Freestyle.The later ’90s found Rosenthal busy within the group Naftule’s Wish. Jared studied with Bob Gullotti for 10 years. He is a professional musician with performances various Jazz Festivals around the world. He is a composer with music featured on MTV and MTV2. He has a Vic Firth endorsement. He has been teaching lessons for over 15 years including music camps, conservatories, and school systems including music therapy as well. The New York Times has described his playing as "vicious", but he's a pretty nice guy. His brother: Brandon Seabrook writes all the music for Seabrook Powerplant. His brother, Jared Seabrook is on drums and Tom Blancarte plays bass. The influence of fleet-fingered Guitar Gods was part of Seabrook’s make-up from the beginning.

Her</a> work is focused on the relationship between Korean music, time, and absolute truth through sound. She is the Artistic Director of Moderngagok which is a contemporary music group in South Korea. She has performed throughout India, Vietnam, North America and Europe. She studied Musicology and Ajaeng performance at Seoul National University in South Korea. Recently, she has completed a master's degree in Contemporary Improvisation the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.    Greg Kelly: Trumpeter Greg Kelley within an improviser whose function, both in single contexts and along with his primary group nmperign, generally features calm explorations from the extended technique of his device. Frequently, his playing noises so alien that it is hard to inform he’s playing a trumpet in any way. After their studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Kelley transferred to Boston, where he produced his documenting debut with nmperign in 1998. Nmperign’s second Compact disc implemented in 1999, and in 2000, Kelley started releasing some recordings for single trumpet, including Trumpet and Clear Gestures. Since 2000, he provides performed with Masashi Harada, Anthony Braxton and Adam Coleman. In 2001, Boxholder Information released The Ilya Tree, a quartet disk that highlighted Kelley playing extroverted free of charge jazz using the fiery saxophonist Paul Flaherty. Also in 2001, he performed with an record by nmperign and a duo record with digital musician Jason Lescalleet. His 2002 produces included a single record entitled EASILY Never Match You ON THIS Life, I WANT TO Feel THE SHORTAGE, a trio disk with Flaherty and Chris Corsano, and some albums with both nmperign and fellow trumpeter Axel Dörner. Throughout 2002, Kelley continuing to tour being a solo musician and with nmperign.   Anthony Coleman (born August 30, 1955) is an avant-garde jazz pianist. During the 1980s and 1990s he worked with John Zorn on Cobra, Kristallnacht, The Big Gundown, Archery, and Spillane and helped push modern Jewish music into the 21st century. From the Sarajevo Jazz Festival to the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Poland, Anthony Coleman’s musical odyssey has taken him through many cultures and led him to wear many hats as composer, improvising keyboardist, and teacher. Coleman joined the NEC faculty in 2006, returning to a school where he himself studied in the 1970s, during the birth of NEC’s Contemporary Improvisation program (then called Third Stream). Received a M.M., at Yale. At the age of thirteen, Coleman started studying piano with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaki_Byard">Jaki Byard</a>. At the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Conservatory_of_Music">New England Conservatory of Music</a> he studied with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Russell_(composer)">George Russell</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Martino">Donald Martino</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Peyton">Malcolm Peyton</a>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Coleman#cite_note-Hyla-2">[2]</a> Coleman has also toured and recorded with John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, Shelley Hirsch, Roy Nathanson, and many others. Coleman has been awarded numerous grants worldwide from New York to numerous European countries. Coleman's collaborators over the years have included guitarist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Sharp">Elliott Sharp</a>, trumpeter <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Douglas_(trumpeter)">Dave Douglas</a>, accordion player <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Klucevsek">Guy Klucevsek</a>, composer David Shea, former <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Beefheart">Captain Beefheart</a> bandmember <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Lucas">Gary Lucas</a>, classical and klezmer clarinetist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Krakauer_(musician)">David Krakauer</a>, guitarist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Ribot">Marc Ribot</a>, bassist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Cohen">Greg Cohen</a>, drummer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Baron">Joey Baron</a> and saxophonist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Nathanson">Roy Nathanson</a>. Coleman has recorded many CDs under his own name, and he has played on more than 100 CDs. Recent recordings areThe End of Summer (Tzadik), which features his NEC Ensemble Survivors Breakfast, Shmutsige Magnaten (Tzadik), Pushy Blueness (Tzadik) and Lapidation (New World), both recordings of his chamber music, and Freakish: Anthony Coleman Plays Jelly Roll Morton (Tzadik, 2009). Plus Damaged by Sunlight (2010) was issued on DVD by the French label La Huit. And You, a compilation of his large chamber ensembles and solo piano recording from 2008 to 2013. His projects include the piano trio Sephardic Tinge, which has released three discs: “Sephardic Tinge,” “Morenica,” and “Our Beautiful Garden Is Open” (all Tzadik). And His Selfhaters Orchestra has issued two CDs: “Selfhaters” and “The Abysmal Richness of the Infinite Proximity of the Same” (both Tzadik).
