Yide Cai: Steeped (品)

To conclude their two-week Studio 170 artist residency, playwright and poet Yide Cai and his team present a "work-in-progress" performance of Cai's play Steeped(品) followed by a panel discussion and Q&amp;A.&nbsp; Steeped(品) is a metatheatrical play that reimagines the Boston Tea Party from the perspective of the tea itself — a leaf that refuses to be a lifeless symbol but rather faces its death. It is set on the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, where two actors are rehearsing a new Boston production about the Tea Party written by a playwright based in New York. One night, the tea puppet they are playing as a prop speaks to them, and tells them that it is the tea lying at the bottom of Boston Harbor for the past 250 years, plucked from a tree in China, processed, shipped, commodified, and ultimately dumped into the sea. The <a href="https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/sta/bos/sfk.html">Studio 170 for Artists / Residency</a> program was established in 2019 to open the Goethe-Institut Boston’s unique, flexible space in&nbsp;Back Bay to New England artists from all fields of artistic practice as a “laboratory for ideas." Beyond just another gallery or concert hall, Studio 170 provides artists and audiences with an open, lively place for inspiration, experimentation, and open discourse in the heart of Boston. A new cohort of artists is selected annually by an independent jury made up of curators and cultural advocates from New England.
