The Lost Cache — A Special Screening and Filmmaker Conversation

What if something thought to be lost for more than 80 years is still waiting beneath the ice? In 1937, legendary mountaineer, photographer, and cartographer Bradford Washburn made the first ascent of Mount Lucania, one of the great feats of early North American mountaineering. Forced to abandon a cache of equipment on the Walsh Glacier—including his beloved Fairchild F-8 aerial camera—Washburn always hoped to return. But the glacier had other plans. More than eight decades later, skier Griffin Post, glaciologist Dora Medrzycka, and a team of skiers, scientists, and explorers venture deep into the remote Yukon to find out whether Washburn’s lost treasures might still be there. The Lost Cache is more than a search for forgotten gear. It’s a story about curiosity, obsession, risk, discovery, and the questions that can endure across generations. As the team navigates a landscape shaped by constantly moving glaciers and a changing climate, the improbable begins to feel just possible. Join for a special screening of this forthcoming documentary—presented in the very place where this remarkable story is connected to the Museum’s own history—followed by a conversation with the director and filmmaking team.
