The History of Candy-Making in Cambridge *Offsite* *NEW*

One of the industries for which Cambridge is best known is candy-making — at its peak in the mid-twentieth century, the city boasted 66 different candy companies, including Squirrel Brand, Daggetts, and NECCO, and Main Street was nicknamed “Confectioners’ Row.” This tour will explore the history of candy-making in Cambridge from the 18th to the 20th centuries, including the longstanding ties of many wealthy Cambridge families to the<br>sugar plantations of the Caribbean and the continuing economic ties to slavery and the sugar economy that greatly contributed to the rise of Cambridge as a candy-making hub.<br>Meeting point: Squirrel Brand Park, 268 Broadway<br>Instructor: History Cambridge<br>
